“Objectivity is not usually in favor in our business these days, but it is critically important. It is what we strive for each night.” Twelve years on, objectivity is still not in favor in the news business. Not even on the major networks.
Charles Gibson is loved by many, I watched him since 1987 when he took over for David Hartman on Good Morning America. He's simply the best. happy retirement
Charlie Gibson is truly missed! He have that laid-back demeanor that is unparalleled by any other journalist on television in recent years, besides from Walter Cronkite and Diane Sawyer.
@@TheLocalLtCharlie was best possible Peter Jennings replacement but now both are gone. In fact all big anchors are gone like Tom Brokaw from NBC News

This was the end of real journalism on ABC. Jennings and Gibson are some of the best journalists to ever live. Gibson claims he left because he saw the direction ABC News was headed in, with the light fluff social media-type stories. And what a shame it has become. Jennings would be appalled and Gibson has said he is appalled.
No it wasn't. Social Media is a growing part of the news, and it and the so called "light fluff" content you despise are a key and important part of it too, like it or not. Jennings, Gibson, and the past news anchors would be proud of how ABC News has grown. Quit whining about what real and what's not. And besides just to add that is not why he left.
I, personally, which I know no one cares what I think, but I loved "Charlie" Gibson. I always thought he was professional as well as heartwarming. He was in my Living Room every morning. God Bless.
Charles Gibson. Let me tell you. I grew up watching you. I miss you. Honest true reporter here. Just not the same at night ever since. Hope retirement is doing you much deserving fun!
I was going through u tube wondering what ever happened to a great reporter Charlie Gibson enjoyed watching his farewell I remembered always watching him giving the nightly news. Great job,and reporter.
I am very happy that Charlie had so many well wishers. I imagine when I retire, in about 8 years, there will be cake in the break room, about 20 well wishers, and the door will close behind me.
Charlie, I want to say THANK YOU for being a mentor to me as we never met but you were one of the people who led me into being a journalist and that is something I will NEVER be able to repay you back for! Hope you are having fun in your retirement!
Charlie Gibson, we being seen you on television. For decades, you being a constant work on television with issues that important to you. Happy retirement!
Like rather’s last broadcast just a few yrs before where staff gathered around the anchor, Charlie didn’t spend that much time in the evening role but he surely delivered quality work that was demanded after Peter’s death
Guy spent 20 years building Good Morning America into a legit rival to the Today show. At this point, he has no need to touch a gig like that trash on CBS with a 10 foot pole
Charlie interned at WLVA, now WSET in Lynchburg, Virginia. The tradition continues, with Mona Kosar Abdi, who was WSET's weekend anchor. Now she's the anchor of World News Now.
After I watched that closing segment long time ago on tv, the snow storm blizzard came to NY and when it was over, I couldn't return back to work because of the snow, so because of that, I told my temporary boss that I won't be returning back to work because of Diane Sawyer taking over as wnt anchor. I don't know why I said that. It was a thought in my mind. When I recently told that to my retired boss, she thought I was talking about Barbara Walters. It was kind of rough
Wow. Looking at today, some of these people (in Charlie's farewell video) have died, been arrested or had articles about questionable things they said, or....simply have been getting their hair color naturally changed to gray.... But we should never take reporters like Mr. Gibson for granted anymore. WE NEED these journalists again!
I liked Charlie but hated to see the slithering snakes in the swamp thanking him like they really appreciated him. True, objective journalism is extinct in America! It is now just people leading a narrative, telling people how to think. I miss the real America from when I was a child. The art of objective journalism is dead.
Peter Jennings and Charles Gibson were the best journalists at ABC. Nobody else can beat them.
the good old days
I miss Peter Jennings.
I agree with you, John!
Alot could, But Peter, oh peter. He's irreplaceable.
Stevie yup
When five U. S. Presidents can say great things about a journalist. Charles Gibson is a great example of what we are sorely missing today.
We need and can get that back!
"Charlie, I've never known whether you are Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or Vegetarian." Sen. McCain's humor was on par. =)
That is what made Sen McCain was his Banter and Sense of Humor!

When he left I was nine. Even then I knew he was the best and I still firmly believe that.
Charlie, I missed from the day you left.

Peter Jennings?
He retired December 2009. He was a good anchor GMA host. I miss him on GMA
This was Peter Jennings' show, it will always be his, no one else can hold a candle to Peter
A lot could actually.
Yes and Charlie realized this, which is why he kept the show largely in Peter’s image

Brian Williams did anchor NBC Nightly News, but he was later suspended and then fired from Nightly News due to him misrepresenting events in the Iraq War

Charles Gibson is the G.O.A.T. hard to believe that he'll be 80 years old on March 9
Charles Gibson had such a reassuring voice
A very much deserved send off going to miss you Charlie
