I am going to say he would perform better if he just get open and shoot 3s. Because the thing is he couldn't post up Wiggins or GP2 one on one, who were the primary defenders on him. The Warriors had his offense all figured out, stop his right hand drive, in case of mismatch, double him when he started to drive. He couldn't really do anything at his current skill level.

It made no sense.Shot selection wasn’t any better. So many open threes that they pump faked and instead opted for bad passes. Rarely if ever drove into the lane against smaller defenders. It was clear after game 3 they had no clue what to do. Even if they took the lead, they’d lose it real quick to horrible shot selections and turnovers. I could go on with how bad the Tatum was and the team, and even the coaching. But I would be typing all day and night.

Let’s not make Wiggins to be a Kawhi Leonard here folks. Tatum is just a wuss with no athleticism or alpha mentality to impose his will when confronted with length and better athleticism than him. Simple as that. You can’t brush Brown with the same paint. Their IQs and lack of elite ball handling might be similar but Brown has that great athleticism and will power to overcome what he lacks in handles and IQ. Tatum just lacks athleticism and alpha mentality. You can’t develop that in the gym. You can improve your skill but not athletic ability and most importantly laid back mental game when the chips are down. Kawhi would have absolutely bodied punked and broke Andre Wiggins’ chest and would never allow him to stare him down.

Brown, even though he has the same problems sometimes (poor shot selection), at least you can see that Brown has a purpose and goes with authority when he attacks the paint.

That is why Stephen A. Smith, other analyst, former NBA players, some fans and Me (why I agree with this video) wanted Tatum to impose his will like Curry did and like the "Superstar" he is(?) by doing more to help his team, like what I think he should be doing, when he is softly attacking the paint instead of dunking over people (like my example {which he has done to pretty darn good defenders. Like during Game 7 of the 2018 Eastern Conference finals LeBron James and on Giannis Antetokounmpo in game 3 this year} especially if Jayson is a Kobe protégé) which Jaylen (his teammate), who does not have the same title "Superstar" as Tatum nor people/media said Boston is his team (what comes with that accolade), Brown did a better job thus why at this moment Tatum is not a Superstar... until he improves and earn the title of Superstar.

    • @ballguy1509

I blame the Celtics organization for trying to turn Tatum into a point guard. They changed who he is as a player. Now I always thought Tatum had flaws in his offense when a bigger defender is guarding him and thought Wiggins would do well against him since he has the length to disrupt his shot. If you ever watch big scoring games with Tatum, example Bucks, he has switches where he is matched up with a undersized/shorter player. In the Bucks 43 point game, Bud had Grayson Allen, George Hill, and Jrue guarding him during that outburst when it should have been Portis or Giannis. Now to my critique of the Celtics. In the off season, I said the Celtics would go to another level if they did everything possible to get Lonzo Ball. I thought he was a perfect fit for the Celtics because both Tatum and Brown are great defensive players and with Williams now playing elite, it would have been off the chart defensively. I think Zo would have unleashed a phase of Tatum's game that has never been seen. Tatum and Brown should be in the open court running and gunning. I didn't want Zo on the Bulls because I saw him getting hurt covering too many players defensively. The Bulls are weaker defensively. Unless Patrick Williams turn into Kawhi 2.0, Zo will never be healthy. He needs a team that is already set defensively, which is the Boston Celtics.

It saddens me when the focus is on failure of one player in a sport that is so dependent on what the whole team brings to the game. It wasn't Tatum's fault the Celtic failed. The Celtics, despite the athleticism of players don't have the skill and basketball IQ to beat a team as talented and well coached as the Warriors. The Warriors under Kerr built this juggernaut seven years ago and have been refining it ever since. Players are skilled but they also know every scheme, every move on the floor. These are smart players willing to sacrifice for the good of the team. The Celtics don't have what is needed at the moment to compete. Tatum played all those minutes simply because the Celtics don't have enough players who can be relied upon to keep games close. Hopefully, they will continue building this team. The Warriors, in the meantime are only going to get better. As a fan, I'm thrilled by that.

You don't know if Celtics will ever get back to that spot with Tatum+Brown. A lot went right for them... Brooklyn missed Ben, Bucks missed Middleton, and Heat were so close to beating them. NBA fans are such prisoners of the moment, a lot of stars have played bad in the Finals. I remember when LeBron got out scored by Jason freaking Terry for the entire 2011 finals, but as soon as he wins a chip, everyone hops right back on the bandwagon. Sadly, that’s just how most fans are, everything is “legacy-defining”. If you listen to social media, you’ll get the impression that players aren’t allowed to have growing pains (like most humans), they either play perfect or their trash. Tatum had a bad series, but that doesn’t mean he’s “trash” and “overrated”. All the greats have struggled, none of them have had it perfect for the entirety of their careers. Tatum, at age 24, has already been to 3 conference finals and an NBA finals, I have no doubt in my mind that he’s going to get better and eventually get over the hump and win the chip.
