Why God Allows Us to Learn from Our Mistakes

  • God is quick to forgive, and he’s given us the gift of confession so we can return to a relationship with him after sin. But this love he has for us is so great that he never wants us to be caught by sin again, which is why he allows our sins to have consequences. Just like your parents would teach you why something is wrong, God helps us build knowledge of sin and its consequences by letting us experience them. Without learning from our mistakes, we would just keep falling into the same sins, separating us from a relationship with God.
Today, Fr. Mike explains why God lets us learn from our mistakes, and how it shows the depth of his mercy.

The fall from God's Grace was also a Blessing from God. By seeing our own imperfections we learn from our mistakes in which we repent for our sins. A lesson which only can be learned by failure in order to be perfected by Christ.

I can relate to this. I identify as this way of parenting. I'm often seen as mean or cold hearted. I love my children but truly believe they must learn from their mistakes. They must fall to get back up. God gives us free will and I allow them to practice it to an extent. I make it clear that their actions have consequences and the consequences are their responsibility. I've prayed that I have been doing the right thing. I now believe I am :)

What his parents were practicing is called controlled floundering. They knew what was going to happen. They knew their child, but they chose to teach him a lesson in a very bold way. One of the things that I don’t like about controlled floundering although it’s great for getting results is the frustration level that comes out of it? Sometimes I wonder if it’s really worth it.

Fr. Mike, your infectious and uplifting way of looking at our worldly lives, with God’s paternal gaze, is unusually healing. If possible, I do wish you could share this gift with your brother priests who are suffering as their faculties are being suspended, and often permanently removed. We have previously seen tragedies among our clergy, undeniably, but sin has consequences, as you just said. Yet who among your brothers are truthfully being dismissed now and in recent years because of sin or transgression against Canon Law? Can you lend them your theological and moral support? I feel you could support them, perhaps, when so few are able to do so.

Thank you Fr. Mike, you are a blessing to me and many of us!
Just want to add a little opinion, I believe we tend to see consequences of sin as "bad" and good things as "good", but that is not always the case in the short terms; some people do have "a good life" by doing sinful things (so to speak), but in the end of course the wage of sin is death; and those who follow Jesus, that is the best thing one can do, will suffer certain "bad" consequences like being rejected, persecuted, etc., but will have eternal life in the end. (Ecclesiastes 7 :15, Proverbs 10: 16, Romans 6: 23)
    God bless you Fr. Mike.

I think it's worth remembering that a good portion of the harsh things done by Yahweh in the old testament weren't actually done by The Father. There are a few examples, but this is one of the easier ones to explain..
You said that you understand the nature of Jesus, so you're probably familiar with John 8:40. It's one of the go-to verses when you want to show that Christ is God. Because the only situation that he could be referring to here is when Yahweh appeared to Abraham in Genesis 18.
Well there's a verse in Genesis 19 that's worded in an interesting way. It's in verse 24 when Yahweh rained down fire upon Sodom and Gamorrah. But it isn't worded that way, it actually says "Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven." It may not look that important at first, but you have two 'Lords' in this verse. You have the Lord on Earth who was just talking to Abraham, and you have the Lord in Heaven that the first Lord rained fire from. The implication of this is that The Father let The Son decide what to do with Sodom and Gamorrah, and The Son decided to call down fire and sulfur from The Father to destroy them. Jesus was the one who decided to pass judgement and kill everyone in Sodom and Gamorrah.
And that's just one example, there are a few more examples I can think of (the killing of the first born sons of Egypt, the 3 days of pestilence after David sinned, etc). So if Jesus had the capacity to do those things, then why should we think less of The Father for doing the same?

Btw: Paul was not in any way the father or writer or anything of the Gospel, so certainly not 'father' in any way...
Even less than him the Pope/Cardinals/Bishops and Priests would be FATHERS of the Gospel today in any way, why would they? makes no sense!!
Tell me: what is 'the Gospel of Jesus'? and why is it inside your church and not written in the Bible?

Fr. Mike - you mention reconciliation doesn't follow forgiveness ( necessarily) & I've watched your video on forgiveness, where you talk about trust as opposed to reconciliation.
I've always thought or understood that forgiveness does involve reconciliation, in most circumstances, otherwise you are bearing a grudge, surely?
If there is no reconciliation then you are treating that person as if they are still in sin against you.
If you are reconciled then you will even trust that person again.
There are situations when it may be inappropriate to be reconciled eg with people who burgled you, or assaulted you etc.
If a partner betrayed you ( in whatever way) & you forgive them, and you decide to reconcile then you agree to trust them & "forget" their sin ie it's not a topic you throw back at them when you're cross.
Forgiveness is difficult - because reconciliation is the best place to be as opposed to I forgive you but I'm no longer your friend, or sibling, or parent/child or partner & I will never trust you again.
That sounds like a grudge & not forgiveness. That sounds like holding onto the pain.
That type of forgiveness anyone can do with little or no effort.
But that is not a soul-deep forgiveness.
Isn't that our eventual aim with forgiveness? A real deep down "letting go" & healing of one's soul. And then to love them on top of it all.
    No easy feat.

I agree. Forgiveness without reconciliation is just a tactful way of saying that he doesn't believe in forgiveness. Fr. Mike better be careful when he prays the Our Father: "Forgive us in exactly the same way we forgive others".

Didn't South Africa have "Reconciliation " events after the overthrow of the De Clerk government & release of Mandela ?
The idea being not just to express the horrors and to try to forgive and then to put them down, but to reconcile the whole nation, black & white in order to move forward ?
I feel Christians are too busy patting themselves on the back to actually stop & see how they can, or rather should, go the extra mile & ask the Holy Spirit to do this for them ! By his power, by his might, not theirs.
For me these lessons in virtue are a lifelong battle & I'm often in disbelief at how many imperfect Christians appear so self - satisfied !

      1. If we didn't make mistakes (a.k.a. sin), God would be forcing this on us, and we wouldn't have free will. He gave us free will because he doesn't want to force us to love Him. 2. A good father allows us to learn on our own without forcing us to do good, but helps us when we fall down.

@@highqueengdg4046 I'm not saying we can't have free will. I'm just saying clearly god can teach us the lessons we need without letting us go through such horrible things. You don't need to teach how important parents are by letting a kids parents die, there's other ways to do it. So why does god teach that way sometimes?

    • @highqueengdg4046
      @highqueengdg4046 2 года назад +4

@@Topazdemonia So now you're not talking about why God allows mistakes, but why He allows suffering. This is a more complex issue, but the biggest answer would be, He knows something better will result from this. (But he doesn't cause evil, and that's another topic that we'll only fully understand in heaven.) Taking your example, the "purpose," if you will, of a kid's parents dying will not *only* involve teaching that kid. Perhaps their parents' mission was completed, and it was time for heaven. Like Fr. Mike once said, there are no "side characters" to God. Back to your question: God has His ways. He sees the bigger picture, and what He allows is the absolute best way.

    • @Topazdemonia
      @Topazdemonia 2 года назад

@@highqueengdg4046 I mean they're very similar issues. Obviously we learn from our mistakes because they cause of suffering to some degree, otherwise we wouldn't learn from them. I'm asking why can't god just teach us what's right and wrong before we make the mistake. Why add the extra step of mistakes (which does include suffering as stated above) when he could simply just not
