  • One of those things. Y'know, those 'easily done and annoyingly expensive' things.
    The Asetek La Prima, Forte and Invicta wheelbases all share this same quick release pin system. It's elegant, but not idiot-proof.

    Important note - I show the faceplate being removed and the wheel-side QR being unbolted to swap the QR pin PCB, but NEITHER is necessary to replace it. Official instructions are here: ruclips.net/video/B_yqFJm6vZc/видео.htmlsi=qPgA9FGEVnHwgb5-

    It happened for a reason Danny.
    That reason was so you could make a video highlighting the possibility of damaging the pins.
    Nice that they are easy to replace by the end user rather than having to return the wheelbase for repair.

    It is a little strange that Asetek didn't make a raised protection of some kind for those pins. Looking at my wheelbase now I can see if I was a bit careless and tried to just push the wheel in onto the wheelbase instead of guiding it in from the top I could very easily put the corner of the wheelside QR right onto one of those pins, from the side, and snap it.

    • @AsetekSimSports

      There is a protective cap covering the entire QR pins and a sticker clearly stating do not remove until ready to use 👍

      @texnorthman 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@AsetekSimSports For installation that works fine, but once the wheelbase is installed the cap goes off, and if you swap wheels a lot it certainly wouldn't be difficult to imagine knocking into those pins :) Avoidable, sure, but I do find I am a little nervous every time I connect the wheel.
      That said, the QR itself is rock solid, and the USB pass through is brilliant, so as long as I can avoid snapping a pin by being dumb it should be great for many years ;)

      @@texnorthman out of thousands of wheelbases sold we have less than 10 instances like these and it always happens when people are moving stuff around or trying to take the wheel off or on while driving.

      @@AsetekSimSports That is reassuring :) It probably feels more likely than it actually is in reality, you would have to be quite unlucky to hit the corner of the wheel side QR directly onto the pins.

    It's good you can get hold of a replacement connector quickly, rather than being stuck in customer service limbo, there is one specific brand I have seen everyone complain about, not had to experience it fortunately, and as you commented, sending the whole base back
    most other brands..

    Def an issue. We install dozens of these a week and fortunately it doesn’t happen often. Initially, there wasn’t even a cover shipped with them.
    Growing pains for all but constantly improving and great motors. 🤜🏽🤜🏽

    I’m kinda split on this issue. (Pun intended)
    On the one hand they should really have been designed it in such a way that the pins are protected. Imagine how many broken pins would result if the pins in the fanatec quick release were on the base as opposed to being protected inside the wheel. Same with moza and simagic QRs.
    This just looks like they are waiting there to be snapped off by any piece of clothing or string that comes near.
    On the other hand I appreciate how easy they made it to replace it…. Almost too easy… like they had some snap off in testing and went “hey we need to make this easily user replaceable”… and charge exorbitantly for it.
    I’m not saying that’s what happened. Just that it makes sense it could have gone that way…

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  7 месяцев назад

      It's a case of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'
      The design is great in one respect, because they're not likely to fatigue and break under normal use like we've seen some people's fanatec pins do on rare occasions. On the other hand, the pins on Fanatec/Moza/Simagic QR's are well shielded from the type of physical damage that I caused. So, if you're a careful person, Asetek's design wins.
      Having the component available to buy is both helpful and suspicious, as you would only put something up for sale if you believed it would be needed. However, you can't condemn a DIY shop for selling hard hats, so I can't condemn Asetek for putting a replaceable component on the shop front instead of behind a support ticket.

    • @alecmillea4539
      @alecmillea4539 7 месяцев назад

      @@dannyleeracing I totally agree on the fanatec front. Those pins being solid means they fatigue over time, I only included them as an example for people’s familiarity with the products. I think the Moza and Simagic design with spring loaded pins protected inside the wheel is the best of all worlds. I can’t help but think asetek could have put the pins protected in the wheel and the flat contacts on the base. It seems to me that the fact you are required to buy the replacement part after you break an extremely delicate exposed piece that is crucial to the units function seems like proof that they know how delicate it is because people are breaking them so often they needed to sell it so as to not overload their customer service with repair requests. It’s just not really indicative of a company owning up to their poor design choices and instead making the consumer pay for their design oversight.
