- We've gathered together The Fast Show gang to chat to journalist Emma Cox about their finest moments and delve into the archives, ahead of their reunion show 'The Fast Show: Just a Load of Blooming Catchphrases'; a two hour extravaganza that interviews the cast and their much-loved characters, intertwined with classic clips and some rarely seen footage.
We are joined by Paul Whitehouse, Charlie Higson, Arabella Weir, John Thomson and Simon Day as they lift the lid on how The Fast Show happened, why it became such a cult classic, and how it felt to bring their characters back over 25 years later for this new special.
'The Fast Show: Just A Load Of Blooming Catchphrases' airs Saturday 29th August, 9pm on Gold, produced by Crook Productions.

Johnny Depp said Paul Whitehouse is the greatest character actor hes ever seen. Hard to argue with when you look how he really becomes the characters he portays with such detail and finese. Truly one of the most underrated British actors of our generation. Could be cast in drama roles and pull it off EASILY imo.
When John Thompson says that young people are watching it now and saying it is so much better than anything else available these days. Just proves how good it was and still is. I am in my mid 40’s, now living in Sydney and introducing this to the younger types who like their comedy and they love it......they say it’s Brilliant like cheesy peas
Simon Day.....if you are reading this. Just this weekend in our local park I saw a dad playing football with his 3 kids...no more than 10 years of age. He dribbled round 2 of them and then slammed a rocket shot passed the 3rd. He then did a Ronaldo like pose- then a clenched fist YES !!!!! I immediatly thought of competitive dad and those Fast Show days. You are a legend and thanks for the great memories that still keep coming.
Loved competitive dad especially when you realize how he came about because you saw how his father interacted with him. Quite poignant. Moments like that and ted and ralph is what elevated the fast show above other sketch shows
I'd also send thanks also for Brian Pern, Tony Beckton and Carl Hooper
Seen this type of stuff many times.
Simon Day is still one of the greatest, underrated comedy performers. He was actually my favourite thing about The Fast Show
My cousin is this guy to a tee. His grandkids can't beat him at anything.
Can’t do the accent...
British comedy genius right here.
The Fast Show was a formative comedic 'coming of age' experience. I have very fond memories of reciting the sketches with friends at school.
The Fast Show Brilliant . Nice to see the real people .
I Love People, they do these amazing things.
I'm 23, only just discovered The Fast Show. It's amazing. Just genius. I know you won't see this but please do a live show 🙏 me, the 13th Duke of Wybourne in the You Tube comments.... what were they thinking of?
The Fast Show is utter brilliance. Nice to listen to the stories here.
Arabella at 09:20: An unwelcome return for her, "Sorry, hello, can you actually see me?" character!
I've been a fan of The Fast Show for 23 years. I still love it to this day.
Paul Whitehouse is a grammarian. I thought I couldn't love him any more!
Missed a trick though, just needed Mark Williams popping up at the end with, “you ain’t seen me, right?”.. :).
I bloody loved that show; loved Swiss Toni. What a great character.
Crying again as they talk about Roy's appearance alone on the couch. A simple, emotionally devastating tribute to Caroline.
roy without renee he sits there looking lost a great tribute to caroline what a lose way to soon
Great to see them together and back. They were great characters. The show was well structured and that's what made it work incredibly well. Great memories.
I have always found it difficult to describe what I imagine my thought-process would look like, but after watching this, I find it oddly reassuring that Charlie Higson would appear to be living inside it! 🏆🇬🇧
As a young teen I remember watching this show and really for the first time ever wanting more and more of it. The two things for me that stand out is being insanely attracted to Arabella Weir (very possibly my first crush!), and realising just how good an actor Paul Whitehouse was when he made me cry watching the old young man recount his sad story. A truly timeless classic of a show comparable to Only Fools and Fawlty Towers.
the best gosh darn panel interview i have ever seen and dare i say probably the best i will ever see!
Tears rolling down as I watched this. Golden times. Nice👍🏻.
Loved this programme. One of the best the uk has put out ever.
Hilarious characters, all uniquely talented ,,,,get them together and the world is safe again!
This! Such a great show, I want to thank every one of these comedians who gave me happiness. If I think of the Fast Show - I think of Colin Hunt, Taramasalata, Ted, and Rowley Birkin QC.. which leads to all the other characters. Bless you all. I love you still...
B C 👍
So good to see everyone together. Many a happy hour spent watching these guys over the years. Thank you!
Although it was originally inspired by a fast montage of traditional sketches, The Fast Show effectively turned the whole sketch show format inside out.
Usually, you watch a sketch and expect to be surprised by a clever punchline. With The Fast Show, you could usually tell what the punchline would be as soon as the sketch started (sometimes the character actually turned to camera and _told you_ what was going to happen), and the joy was in the (sometimes convoluted, sometimes incredibly obvious) journey to get there.
Never get away with that anymore. Brilliantly simple.
My Daughter says I was Competitive Dad...Absolute genius Simon...and I loved your book...surprising though it was...
Brilliant!
I was absolutely smashed !
LEGENDS! Me and my friends laughed our asses of.
Zoom chat with the cast of The Fast Show? Ooooh! Suits you sir! Will there be interactivity sir? Will sir be “raising his hand”? OOOOooo! Ooooohh! Suits you sir. Suits you...
Lol at simon day not realizing why it was called the fast show (until series 3) 🤣
Thanks for posting ❤
What a joy the Fast Show was, like they say we were lucky back then to have so much great comedy
Legends! thanks so much for this
Wow, that was fantastic! So good to hear from such talented people... a live show sounds like a great idea
LOVE YOU ALL GUYS ,THE FUNNIEST COMEDY SHOW EVER XX.
Most enjoyable insight.
So funny and such nice people.
Joyous! Thanks for sharing.
So many catchphrases that I still use today
What a great watch...I say do a special again or a reunion tour
This made my Friday.
Cox,ooohh suit you sir ooohh.
You guys we’re / are absolutely brilliant...
Fabulous show!
Wonderful - loved that..
How anyone thinks Paul whitehouse is a hilarious is just a genius?
Like a moonlight shadow in the style of acid dinner jazz arranged in a rising dynamic pattern resolving in a dramatic police chase from Jacko.
Coming up..
Still cracking me up today
Christmas Panto!, Not this year. Think i will just get "very, very drunk".
BRILLIANT!!!! :D
Loved John as narrator of The Rottentrolls too
Awesome funniness!!
F***king brilliant. No wonder the BBC took a wide berth.
The BBC took a wide berth?? The BBC aired and promoted it, didn't they??
"You ain't seen me, right???"
Still great!
To this day I can still spout off the entire script for the gizmo ads.
Please do another Down the Line with Gary Bellamy series!!!
Every evening in the 70's and 80's there was a comedy on the TV. I'm sure the Gov. dictated this to cheer the nation up.
Check out the fast show on twitter. Great memories of a great show
Shame Caroline couldn't be there. RIP
Scortchio! E hetete hetete, Buthros Buthros Ghali.
♥️
Simon Day characters were the best.
Hello there!
Nice.
Nice
Niiiice
I've been wondering what Jesse's Diet has been this last week?
Noticed they all seem much calmer knowing that it was such a success all the pressure is now off and they can reminisce over a wonderful hit show.
So how can I get the amazing fast show if I don’t have gold or sky tv
Suits me
annoying it was shown on gold and not bbc 2
Marvellous....isn't it?
Arabella on the timing of events "nobodys gonna be interested in this for fucks sake" 🤣
Controversial comment from her about Michael Jackson - he was found not guilty
Roy and Renee were great characters but Mrs Merton was Caroline ahernes best character imo.
To Debbie mcgee "what attracted you to millionaire Paul daniels"
To Chris Eubank "you're going to punch me aren't you?"
Today, I was mostly watching YT then.................. suits me tho
Lucky people..
It’s “it was him and me”, not “it was him and I”. Remember the rule “I before me except after she”.
Paul might only be second to Bob? People who know what I mean?
I was going to ask, where is Poula Fisch?, but then found out she died in 2016. Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
My left ear thought it was ok
When did Simon Day turn into Zinedine Zidane?
I'd like to explore a Victorian folly with Arabella.
Cheezy peeez, aren't they great
Bono estente!
:-)
Emma Cox!!? Ooh! Suits you madam, had a lot of experience? Ooh! Bet you have, ooh! can't say that anymore.
Great show. Could have paid a bit more respect to Ms Aherne....
It really is "It was Paul and I" - When people say "It was me" that is actually incorrect. How to check? Reverse it. Do you say Me was it? Nope.
There's no magic rule about "reversing" sentences, and there is no central authority for the English language. "Right" is however people speak. And if you go back a few years you'll find that some sentence structures that were the norm became extremely rare, and vice versa.
For example, using "fewer" instead of "less" for countables is something a lot of people think is a "rule", but can be traced to a specific style guide (written about 200 years ago), whereas using "less" for countables was the norm in the olden days (and still perfectly correct by any relevant standard).
Same with the whole "I vs. me" thing. If someone knocks on your door, you ask "who is there", and the reply that comes back is "It is I", don't open the door; it's probably a vampire.
Amazing to think the BBC once did actual comedy. Now it apparently consists of a various combinations of militant left wingers carefully selected according to diversity criteria, with marxist activists sitting talking about why "whiteness is a capitalist structure" (this weeks BBC "comedy" highlight) as everyone involved nods and nobody disagrees. This is apparently now "comedy". It might appear to be relentless propaganda with comedic value being pretty much the last thing considered. And you would be correct. This is spot on:

Nice lip wax , still shiny
It's a tried and tested format. Monty Python, Dick Emery, Dave Allen, The Two Ronnies, Les Dawson...the list goes on. All using 'sketches' with the same characters appearing in weekly episodes. I'm not saying I don't like the fast show, I love it but it's nothing new. Only the characters were new.
Er, not sure about Monty Python there mate. One of the points about Python was that there were no recurring characters. With the exception of the Army officer, but that was used more to move to a new sketch rather than being funny. Oh, and the Gumbys, now that I think about it. They certainly used similar types of character; Cleese’s complaining characters for example, most famously in the Parrot sketch, but the point was that they were different characters. Totally agree with you about the others you mention, though.
@@lidbass ... You've effectively just done the Spanish inquisition sketch there, mate! 🤣
Wow look at the chin on suit you sir guy.
Old, old men going through the motions
Paul Whitehouse is a comedy genius, but clearly not a genius when it comes to the grammar :) It should, as Charlie says, be 'Paul and I pulled it together' not 'Paul and me...'. The easiest way to check is to remove the other person and see if it still works as in 'I pulled it together' or 'Me pulled to together'.
Yes indeed, you can't say much these days. Sadly, political correctness has killed the real comedy that has strong ties to the society and day to day real life.
bollocks
@@brandbird Society progressed and so did comedy, I can't say I find any modern comedy to be funny though and I'm only in my 20's.
oh go on James! I bet you can't get enough of Nish Kumar, Adam hills, Jo brand, Russell Howard, Jack Whitehall, and all the other hilarious sidesplitting comedians who are obviously so much better than the fast show!.
@@brandbird brandbird. Do you require a safe space sir? Suit you sir!.
You do realise they were being sarcastic, right? I.e., _they are saying it now_ complaining about how "you can't say it now". They're basically parodying *you.* /woosh
Very much of its time. Not funny anymore. In fact rather sad.
