First, thanks for not explaining every single chord and the anchoring!! That kills most lessons. I really appreciate you taking time to teach us. I'm an intermediate Rhythm player overall, but an amateur lead player. Sadly, I memorize lead moves more than having an intuition. Lead playing comes very slowly.

Agreed. If you are already to the point you believe you can play this solo, then there is no point going over very basic stuff, which is what a lot of these RUclips lessons do. It's a huge waste of time. I could figure this solo out myself given time, but the very reason I look online for lessons is to save time (my band is doing this song for the first time in a couple of weeks, so I don't want to fart around in Transcribe! learning it.)
Thanks! I understand how you guys feel, but I too have alot of videos that cover the basic stuff along with the solos as well. I put these youtube videos up to draw folks over to my website where I have many many dvd and download lessons available for purchase, as well as an online membership which gives you access too all the lessons. Many, if not the majority of my customers need help with the basic stuff like chords and rhythm patterns and what have you, so I include that as well. But I'm like you guys, I'll watch some of my own lessons and think to myself "Geez, just shut up and play get to the point"! But then I remind myself that I have to think about the general players out there that need that little extra. Thanks again!

I find your work really educational. I'd appreciate a little more talk on how you get the tone you do on each of your works. If you might. If not, fine. I get educated regardless.
Hi Kirk, and thanks for the comment. My tone settings are basically the same on all my lessons, I just use varying amounts of delay and reverb, sometimes adding overdrive or other effects if the song calls for it. For those, I explain what I'm using. For this lesson I was just using delay and reverb, and I may have added a touch of overdrive in the mix.
The main "tone" comes from a Fender amp, this one being a 65 Bassman. I have a slew of Fenders amps, but my favorite is my Deluxe Reverb. They all have the basic same "Fender" tone, so if you like that sound, you would want to use a Fender amp. The settings are simple, bass and treble set around 6, plus or minus at tad. No drastic EQ settings, and certainly no bright switch turned on for more treble when using a Tele. I forgot to mention that I use a compressor too.
For this song, I used a short single quick delay around 140 mils and a little reverb. In a live situation, I would have my reverb turned off because a room will naturally create enough reverb for this particular song. I hope this helps!
Ken, for a beginner you should explain note for note what you are playing.

Hey Ken! Thank you for the lesson. I am a big Dwight Yokam fan and a fairly new guitar player. I am wondering is your guitar or amp set up a certain way to get that classic Dwight Yokam sound?
Hi Dennis. I didn't set my amp up any different than I normally would, but Pete Anderson used a modified deluxe reverb on all those early Dwight records, and he had mid tone control added that he would set at 10, roll the bass off to 0, and I'm not sure where he would set the treble. But every guitar (and amp) sounds different, so you just need to experiment with your tone controls to find the tone you like. Thanks!
Well done, one of favorite songs ever!! What gives it that "twang"? Like a slight distortion.
Thank you. It's mostly a combination of of picking technique from both hands. A Fender(ish) style amp will sound much better than a Marshall or high gain amps. No, it's not the slight overdrive that makes the "twang" sound, but I do like the sound of an amp that's just on the cusp of being overdriven.

Man I'd like to know what amp your using? & Are those Seymour Duncan vintage broadcaster pickups? Or was that your other tele? I love your tone in all your videos not to mention your playing!
Thank you for the kind words. It's been a while back since I shot this video, but I'm going to guess that it was my 74 Princeton. I really can't recall what the pups were at the time. That was a tele I built using parts from Warmoth, and I tried a half a dozen necks as well as a half a dozen sets of pups in it, and I never did like the way it sounded. I still have it, but it hasn't been played since about the time I shot this video!

I've always heard that older tele pick ups sound different then newer ones... is that true or is it all according to the amp?
+Matt Goodson I just built it. It's a Warmoth Body and is loaded with Seymour Duncan Broadcaster pickups. The tone comes from the wood, and pickups just enhance whats already there, but different amps have different tones too. Thanks!

+Alex Whalen I've got the SD Vintage Stacks in the sunburst American Standard that I replaced with this new one. The stock PU's buzzed so bad at the gig I had (shitty stage lighting...over 100 cans) that I had to go with the humbuckers, and the vintage stack bridge sounds pretty good. The neck, not so much, so I put a mini in there and liked it alot. But the tone doesn't compare to a nice single coil!
