This car is so beautiful and so state of the art circa 1967, excluding the turbine. I have a fondness for it because not only is it beautiful, but it was one of the last cars Jimmy drove in competition. JM

I got into IndyCar racing when I was a kid. As an adult in '83 I saw the first Cart races at Laguna. I started to go to Portland for the CART races every year for 22 years. Then in 2002, I moved to SW Portland. I met Rolla and his sons in their little shop, two blocks from my house, they serviced my work truck for a few years. Rolla was a trip! I used to see him ripping up and down Beaverton-Hillsdale- Highway in his blue Ford Aeorstar, when he was in his 90's! haha I used to stand in the hall from the cluttered little office in front to the shop... staring at walls plastered with glossy photos of cars and events, like a scrap book of history. Rolla come in and gives me a hard time, because I want to hear all these stories. but he is kinda gruff and says; All that stuff in in the past... Rrrrr. Then other times he would tell me mind blowing engineering ideas they just figured out on their own, or just crazy stuff they did, because nobody told they they couldn't. I just saw where they tore the shop down for development... also I saw the last hot rod all aluminum roadster they built, out cruzing in the nice weather. I'm thinking the service manager at Raleigh Hills Automotive bought it for 25 grand or so. What a deal, the fab was unreal! Glad to have know Rolla and my friend Gary Vollstedt too! End of an era for sure.

I had the opportunity to meet and visit with Rolla Vollstedt at his shop in 1973. No big fancy race shop, pretty utilitarian, but he did a lot with what he had. Rolla was a nice person to visit with, and the shop a sight to see, car parts neatly hanging everywhere, including the spaghetti headers from the Ford engines.

F1 Legend Jim Clark used a dose of Bon Ami in the ports of his INDYCAR at Riverside 1968 to make the rings seat! In the past, Bon Ami was used to help seat rings in a running engines. I've heard that GM even had a procedure where mechanics would introduce fine powder into the carb of a running engine to help seat rings to get rid of a warranty problem...I learned there's "mechanics" still claiming to use Bon Ami to seat rings before the engine is run on high performance engines...... Usually the pistons are installed with a small amount of Bon Ami and oil on the rings, then the engine is rotated about ten times. Then dissembled, Bon Ami washed off without removing the rings and the engine reassembled with minimal oil on the pistons..... A well keep secret for improved ring sealing!
