The passing of our wild deer friend Eva - 2002-2016

- We first met Eva when she was a week old fawn. We were “friends” with her intelligent mother who visited every day, and so Eva grew up very interested in these humans who lived in her neighborhood. Eva formed a special bond with Marlis, and over time it seemed obvious that Eva understood a lot of the German and English that she heard. Deer are not like dogs, however. More like cats, they can be affectionate, but they are very willful and often obstinate. Eva loved to stand on the porch and look out on the yard, or into the house. Sometimes it was near impossible to get her to leave if she didn’t want to. I wish I had a camera when Marlis was standing behind Eva, pushing on her butt with all her strength to try to get her to go down the short porch stairway. Eva stood like a Tai Chi master - with all your strength you couldn’t get her to move.
. . .
Eva loved to figure things out. Anything new in the yard would interest all the deer, as it would be something new in the environment, but Eva was always fully aware. We built a small garden house and she carefully watched every step of the construction. When it was finished she stuck her head in the door, looked all around, and then slowly walked around the whole structure. You could see her figuring out how this new structure changed the topography of the yard. Suddenly there were a couple of new places to hide out. Suddenly a view that was always there is obstructed. The place where the fawns used to hang out is now a narrow space between the garden house and the garage. Eva takes it all in.
Starting in their 3rd year, does usually have one or two fawns every year. When she was young, for several years Eva would have three fawns every spring. Most of her fawns looked like her (facial features and body shape), and most of them were a bit more intelligent and healthy than their cousins in the herd. Some of Eva’s bucks became very close to us ( see Yoda: • Yoda, a friendly Wild ... ).
In her last year or so we could see her age. Her front left leg was perhaps injured, but it could be she had arthritis. It looked that way. Marlis applied arnica gel. Eva really liked that. She also liked to lick Marlis’ hands afterwards. She would have eaten Bach Rescue Cream (made from flowers) out of the tube if we had let her! Marlis put Rescue Cream on Eva’s occasional scrapes and wounds.
. . .
We have coyotes, an occasional mountain lion, and of course cars. It’s not an easy life for the deer. In this remote area where people built houses but the land is still pretty wild and open, the deer didn’t feel pushed out of their environment. Some have chosen to befriend friendly humans. It’s hard to describe the incredible feeling of being so close to these majestic creatures. I don’t want to romanticize our experience too much, but I have to say that we have for years been daily blown away by having these guys so close. Even with that extraordinary experience, getting to know Eva took the experience to a whole different level. She was a dear deer friend who has been sorely missed - never to be forgotten.

I can guarantee that her life was more stress free than most other deer. Being able to truly relax and be groomed by you must have been a true pleasure and something quite rare for such a skittish creature.
it was like she was at a beauty spa for deers.. getting groomed... getting massages ...
it must be a save space for these cuties, they might live in less fear, having those big hooman friends around :3
So sad when a dear friend passes on the torch of life, leaving our love with the memories but not their physical presence. The deer feel the loss too. I have seen & felt it with mine.
This interaction with people is how they naturally are when they feel safe in their "home" area..with people, they can feel the same "de-tension" as we do with our cats or dogs, innocence & peace.. no hierarchical tension as between each other, they will go from living on the other side of cover hiding as they monitor us to engaging with us, & bedding down in a safe relaxing area, where the people are calm & doing the very same.. being @ peace..
Many people think deer are sick when they are not acting scared constantly..they are very quiet and peaceful, loving animals, bonding is supremely important to them, they like to make "buddies" to their social and security advantage..it makes one less threat for them, making their life easier🥰
What a wonderful way to honour the friendship you had with Eva. I wish I could have such an experience with a deer for even a day. You and Eva were blessed to have each other!
Wonderful way?? Buy exploding her on the internet?? If they really cared. And I'm not saying that they don't. They wouldn't put it on the internet for likes, memories are enough. Put that's people, we all need likes. Apparently.
Why honor someone with five people when you can do it with 100,000?
Michael zhbanov are you serious? Stop being an asshole. They are sharing their beautiful story of love and what humanity should be to these lovely creatures. And I doubt he’s making lots of money if ANY. There is women who post ass twerking and posts on social media everyday of the DUMBEST shit that rots our minds. This is refreshing, pure, and beautiful. Open your mind man. ☮️
Fourteen years...That is beautiful. I'm sorry for your loss but I'm grateful for you sharing your experiences throughout the years.
Thanks Curtis!

All deer have unique personalities. Some does are much better mothers than other. Eva was very attentive with her fawns, a really great mother, but in her 3rd and 4th year you could see that she was naturally well-suited to watch over all the deer in the herd. She was just that curious, attentive and intelligent, as well as being healthy and large. Deer respect good health and will even chase away injured or diseased deer.
She also liked to lick Marlis’ hands afterwards. She would have eaten Bach Rescue Cream (made from flowers) out of the tube if we had let her! Marlis put Rescue Cream on Eva’s occasional scrapes and wounds.
In her last couple of months she became increasingly nervous as she began to feel the vulnerability of her age. She could still run at full speed if she needed to, but it would take her some time to recover. Some days in her last weeks she would be relaxed, laying out on the grass in the sunshine. I went up to her on one of those last days and sat down next to her on the grass. I stroked her neck for a while, and then stopped. We just sat alone next to each other for about fifteen minutes - perfectly silent, looking off into the distance. Then she turned her head to me, licked my hand three times and then just looked into my eyes for a few intense seconds, and then she looked away again, staring again at nothing in particular in the yard.
A couple weeks after that she simply didn’t show up in the yard, like she had nearly every day for fourteen years. There’s a strange thing that adult deer do once every couple of years or so. They will head off on a short journey, perhaps checking out new territory, or looking for an out-of-herd mating experience, but then after some days, sometimes as long as two weeks, they return to the herd. Eva did that a few times over the years. We were hoping that was the case this time, but we were doubtful. We’ve waited for two months now before making this video. After two weeks we could see the change in the herd. Suddenly the matriarch was gone and the hierarchy was up for grabs. There was a lot of bewilderment, aggressive hoof stomping and nervous running as they slowly began to sort it all out. During this time another deer we had grown close to also disappeared. That was Eva’s daughter Rosie, known in our deer videos as the fawn who fell into a deep hole:
ruclips.net/video/ZY6tlfjJ4HM/видео.html
and who later as an adult took on the role of raccoon chaser for the herd:

so sorry for ur loss
How wonderful that you got to have her in your lives for 14 years. You as well as Eva were blessed to experience and learn from each other. it is obvious from the videos how much she loved you all and considered you both members of "her herd". The relationship you all had with each other makes me think that in the beginning, this is the relationship Adam and Eve had with all the animals in the Garden of Eden. So special. May God comfort you in your grief. Luke 3:6 "And all flesh shall see the salvation of God".

Wow what an amazing and deeply touching story! This is now my favourite channel on RUclips! Deer (particularly red stags) are my favourite animal in the whole wide world! But, it's very hard to find much about deer on RUclips (sadly, you're more like to find awful hunting videos with thumbnails of dead deer which is really horrible and distressing to see for an animal lover like me!) so thank you for making the world (and the internet) a better place by posting videos of actual live deer (who's have thought that was so difficult!). I shall continue to follow you, the animals and your amazing journey (have liked, shared and subscribed to your channel and can't wait to watch all the videos!). This is just incredible footage of deer and was just what I needed (have been searching for awhile) so thank you so much! I get what you mean about deer having different personalities too, I have also observed that (although I do think they are more like dogs than cats cause cats are mean but I get what you mean!) Some deer can be so funny and silly and others very still and dignified. I love their personalities and their gentle kind souls. I wish you had a book as these amazing stories and encounters. Your experiences with the deer are so wonderfully touching and well written I for one would love to hear/see more! Best wishes to you and all the lovely deer (deer can come hang out in my garden any day!) how anyone can harm these animals is beyond me they are so loving, gentle and kind! I'm very sick and in poor health and your videos and the deer at my local deer centre give me so much hope and strength facing death (to me heaven - If there is one - will be a beautiful forest full of stags and waterfalls lol that would be amazing. They are my symbol of hope and peace
What beautiful people you are. Sorry to hear about your loss, but I am also sorry there are not more people like you. You are in my thoughts.
TheWizardJeff Agreed!
Did they eat it?
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
You couldn't have said it better.
R.I.P. you had a beautiful relationship with her.
Sorry to hear this :( You guys are perfect example of how human beings may coexist with wild nature in peace and harmony.
its easy to co-exsist with deer, but try it with cougars, bears, aligators, snakes etc.......
@@joelcr250 people have done this im sure their are videos about it
I am sorry for your loss. I have deer that are lifelong friends and are much like pets.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful relationship with your dear deer friend Eva!
So terribly sad but so beautiful at the same time.
You were a kind friend to her for so long. My heart breaks for you in your loss. *Hugs*
That is heaven on earth. You are/were so compassionate and loving. When you put your hands on Eva you didn't just lay your hands on her... You stroked her to make her feel good. Every other wild deer is lucky to live out 7-8 years in the wild and your princess lived 14 years of luxury. I bet you miss the small things like her licking your toes. :) I could literally sit there all day.. Heck, Id prolly put peanut butter in between my toes to lure the lick.
I like to imagine that out pets are angels in disguise. How people treat their pets speaks a lot about their personal character. You guys are blessed.
Sorry for your loss
Thank you Eva for patiently, lovingly, teaching all of us through your human friends ... blessings along your way beyond life.
My GOD how great Thou art to share these lovely creatures with this couple. They commune with peace & tranquility.
Rest in peace. Love your videos, Eva.
My wife and feed our deer corn in the front yard and watch them every summer either fawns as they grow. We haven't been fortunate enough to get close enough to touch them but they stand at a distance and watch as we place to feed and water for them. So sorry to hear about Eva but you made her life so much richer by letting know how loving some humans can be.
Awww, that's such a shame that she passed on. I'm so sorry for you're loss, she was a beautiful deer and a great friend too, she will be missed. R.I.P. Eva😔🙁
The lady in the video is soft in touch & words, hubby is fortunate and the deer as well. These experiences could easily be a book....Thank you for sharing your love with us observers
BEAUTIFUL, SHE IS SO TRUSTING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a wonderful and calming video. You made her life so peaceful. I don't know who you are, but you are a kind and gentle soul. Thank you.
I'm a hunter and I think that is so special that you great folks got to enjoy her for all those years.
Well that was beautiful and really sad :( rip Eva :(
What a sweet story. Did my heart good. There was a buck in the lane around our acreage this morning, who stayed for quite sometime. I fear for his life as it's right in the middle of deer hunting season. I don't understand how anyone could shoot these beautiful creatures that sometimes grace us with their presence. Sounds as though Eva had a wonderful friendship with you. I'm sure you will miss her.
No words , just love. Thanks for sharing a lesson of life.
Eva's life was extraordinary because of you!! 💖💖
Always sad to loose a friend. I'm so sorry. She was a Beautiful creature and obviously loved y'all very much. You were lucky and blessed to have so much time with one of Gods treasures.I hope her spirit fills you heart and she never leaves you.
A wonderful tribute to Eva.
Those are some beautiful animals friends that you have visiting your yard.
I am so sorry for your loss. The bond with wild deer is something that cannot be understood unless experienced. Looking into their eyes used to make us feel as if we had a mutual understanding of love and respect. Although many will argue the point, I believe that deer do enjoy a relationship with humans that has nothing to do with food. In the mountains of PA, we had a herd of deer that we knew for many years. Our matriarch, Rosie, was very much like Eva. She also disappeared one day after many years of knowing her. The herd was never really the same, and it became very fragmented and chaotic. I am sure that your life has been enriched greatly by your deer herd. There truly is nothing else like it.
I can feel in your writing that you had a similar experience with these magnificent creatures.
I just want you too know that this is one of only two internet video's that have actually had an effect on how i see nature. I've never been a hunter; never wanted to be but to see the way Eva looks at you and the way you tenderly touch her is a choice bit of life and it was an honor watching you love Eva and she loving you back. 04 21 17 / 11:00AM
I firmly believe that humans that help animals have a special place in God's heart.
Also Thanks For Giving The World A Glimps Into Your Beautiful World Lady You Are AMAZING I Like How You Talk Your Accent Is Cute And The Way You Laugh Your A Gentle Spirit In Your Own Right...Amazing ...Thanks For Sharing Eva Her Story Is Beautiful. .
There is no doubt in my mind, that your lives were enriched in ways untold, with your sweet Rosie and her herd. You have been blessed in a way that so many of us animal/nature lovers can only dream of. Thank you so much for sharing her moments with you, with all of us. I'm sorry for your loss, as I'm sure you feel it deeply. May Rosie rest in peace and her offspring and generations after keep her in your memory for years to come. xoxo
I am so sorry for your loss of dear Eva. She was a beautiful animal and trusted you wholeheartedly. The bond between you was so amazing and lovely to watch. Thank you for caring for her and loving her. Someday you'll be in Heaven and your sweet friend will be there waiting for you. RIP sweet Eva.
So beautiful.❤ You guys are so lucky to have had her in your life. EVA❤ 🦌 2002-2016
I am so very sorry for your loss of Eva. I love watching your videos. Your truly kind spirit shows in the love you have for your animal friends as well as the animals trust and love for you. Rest easy in the fact she lived a very long happy and healthy life.
May humanity become more friendly and accomodating to animals in the wild as much as possible. Thank you for sharing this story.
That is an amazing age!! You should be happy knowing you were great friends to her, and she died of old age with her loved ones, rather than a bloody end by a cheering hunter. Thank you for being a friend to deer!
To be in harmony with nature is to be in harmony with yourself.
Wiser words is never said
She was so beautiful and sweet, I am so sorry for your loss. You are so lucky to get to be so close to all of the deer, I sure wish that I could. I could see how close and comfortable she was with you, what a lovely thing to share with some of God's most beautiful creatures.
I love this Lady. God has Blessed her with His Gift of Animal Kindness.
I love watching your videos, and I'm sorry for your loss.
She was almost human in the amount of love she received from you. Losing a friend like that would not be easy if not for your husband being with you. It was a wonderful experience for me, too, to see the video. May God bless you and your husband.
Sorry your sweet baby died. She loved you. I feel for you and her. I’ve had families of wild deer come to me for petting.
RIP Eva...you were such a beautiful and kind doe...such peaceful animals...😊
She was family. She lay under the pyramid and next to the Buddha and next to you while you rest in a chair. Your acceptance of nature is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
You are amazing peaceful people living a beautiful life. Many could learn from you. Thank you
Sad to hear this. Thank you for treating her with respect for all those years.
Thank you for sharing your deer stories. It is such an honor and privilege to be befriended by a wild animal and it is so hard when they leave us. My 9 year relationship with Biggie mirrors much of yours and even though he transitioned 17 years ago he visits me daily. Eva will do the same I'm certain.
What you do with the deer is simply amazing you are very loving and they can sense you care and won't hurt them.you have a God given talent please keep doing what you do for as long as you can we all have to do or part to preserve our nature
Thankyou
The true definition of unconditional love is an animal friend. Sorry for your loss.
Someone had mentioned this, what a wonderful place for these dear to go and really be able to sit down and relax. The woman is so calming. I can see that she has a wonderful soul
So beautiful. You are the deer whisperer.

I am sad to learn of Eva's passing. It must have been heartbreaking for you both because you knew her as a fawn and grew up with her for so long that she was obviously a member of your family. RIP Eva. I will miss you too.
So very very sorry for your loss of such a dear friend. Nothing can ever replace such a kind and loving soul.
You were blessed to have her let you into her life. God bless.
HOW I WISH THIS WORLD HAD MORE PEACEFUL PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT RESPECTED MOTHER NATURE AND EACH OTHER.

Though it has been over a yea since Eva has passed, I wanted to say I am sorry she is no longer there with you. Any loss is difficult but having her for 14 years, well, that's a family member. She was lovely and smart. Thank you for sharing your story.
Thanks for you message. We still miss her, but her children and grandchildren are still around. Even so, she was an exceptionally smart creature.
She was one of a kind...there may seem no rhyme nor reason in life...i happen to think some encounters were just meant to be..☀️☀️☀️
Just a beautiful story.
I am sorry for your sad loss of this beautiful creature. You will be reunited with her on the rainbow bridge. Thank you for what you do for these precious animals. You are wonderful people.
What a beautiful story. You really filled my heart with the story of your friendship. How wonderful. And she lived for fourteen years!
She's such a majestic creature. May she rest in peace.
I am sorry for your loss. I know Eva didn't "belong" to you, but she, as you've said, was a dear friend. What a wonderful, special bond you had with her. What you have with these noble beings is extraordinary. Thank you for sharing.
That relationship was truly a gift from God. Glad you were able to enjoy and be so important in her life.
I'm so sad to hear this news. But it's clear that she was loved until the end. She knew you loved her and cared for her. Bless her little heart. Thank you for taking care of her
Celebrate the life of a true friend. You are one of the blessed
Oh how very sad! Especially for her to just leave and never return, that is heartbreaking. What a wonderful experience you have there. What a blessing you and Eva were to each other and how precious that these deer have a safe place and human friends in their world.
your making these deer very easy to hunt, thank you.
So sorry for your loss. What beautiful memories.
That was perhaps the most beautiful video I've seen on RUclips. Deer are such lovely creatures, so graceful and poised. I am sorry for your loss.
