In 2022, Uganda faced a severe food crisis exacerbated by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, drought, and rising costs of essential commodities. The impact was particularly significant in remote and marginalized communities like Karamoja in the country's North, North-Eastern, and Eastern regions. Vulnerable populations, especially children and women, struggled to access adequate food, resulting in a devastating toll. Reports indicate that the food insecurity crisis in Karamoja alone caused 2,465 fatalities in 2022, predominantly among the elderly and children.
