Fantastic. This is 100% why I love the internet. 20 years ago there would be no way would I be able to view content like this. ie., it's too specialized for a TV show (ie, talking about just flashlights). Great job. I've unsuccessfully tried to make videos where I explain things (whether it be flashlights or cameras) and it's really hard. You do a great job. Very organized and great explanations. Just subscribed.
I've had this light for many years, and even with all my newer version light from Olight, this is still one of my most used lights. It's my sometimes EDC and it's a light I use around the house, in the cabin and it's a light I carry on the inside breast pocket of my suit when I have a formal occasion to attend. And it or one of the S1/S1R family of lights is attached to my wrist via a lanyard when I sleep... so I don't wake up and scare the bejesus out of everyone sleeping in the house or cabin when I stub my little toes on the foot of the bed or a chair, and I'm rolling on the floor screaming and hollering. Good review!
Excellent review! I've been looking into this light b/c of what you mentioned in the beginning of the video...battery availability. Gotta have a solid AA! I own a few CR123 Olights and I love them! However, for a go-to, bob light or even for an EDC this is a good choice. I've had many troubles with my current favorite AA powerhouse, that goes in a sheath on my EDC bag. It's the Nitecore EA11. I'm planning on doing an update video after seeing what the outcome of a warrantee will bring...Every function works flawless, but the hotspot has developed a donut shape, with a hole in the middle. While in enough daylight, you can see the LED Emitter has a "bump" or flaw in the center! Very strange. I've only owned this flashlight since July 2016. I may pick this S1A instead. It has better runtimes and more of an even beam. Glad I found this review and your channel! Take care-
Bushcraft & Banjos hey check out the streamlight ProTac 1L-1AA. I love it! I'm with you! I would always find a light I wanted, then find out it took a cr123. Then I found the ProTac 1L-1AA and couldn't believe it! It's like $40 on Amazon and it takes either a cr123 or 1 AA. It puts out 350 Lumen with the cr123 and still puts out decent 150 lumen with the AA. I typically run the surefire cr123 in it because they are so cheap yet the best 123 I've used. If the battery runs out I can just throw in 1 AA battery and keep going. Oh yeah it is fairly small too. I carry it most days. If I want a much smaller I carry my olight or my microstream.
AA is my favorite size flashlight. A super easy carry size and with very respectable power and run time when using Alkaline or NiMH. When using Li-ion, you get the ridiculous power-to-size ratio but you lose equally on run time so you might want to snag one of those 4 cell plastic battery cases for peace of mind.
Where do you get the 4 cell battery cases? I have seen them on different flashlight You Tube videos but haven't heard anyone say where to find them. Thanks !!!
Very nice review on the S1A. I’ve had one for quite a while and I just love it. I’m not a big fan of the knurling on the slide either, but for its size it’s not really that hard to hold on to. I bought an Olight M1X STRIKER a couple weeks ago which has the exact knurling S1A has but only on a larger scale. More like shallow grooves, it’s almost inaccurate calling it a knurl. I’m really trying to like it, but it’s about as slippery as a tadpole in a still pond to hold on to even with dry hands. It also has the fun button that you have the click for every light level. Don’t let me get started. Anyway again nice review and thanks for sharing I sure appreciate it. Also you’re making me a little jealous. I wish I still had my little tool room lathe. Ciao.
I got lucky and found one of these in Copper couple days ago, perfect size light IMO!! And the best part to me is it takes normal AA batteries!! Although I'll be running it with the 14500 recharge to save$ on buying batteries it's nice to know in a long term power outage you can just use AA's!!! I recommend Every Home has a flashlight and enough 🔋 to last at least 5 days...Especially if your in a state/city prone for Natural disasters!!! Mainly Floods!! Power is known to go out during floods, reminds me i need to find a couple portable POWER banks to keep around the house..
Thank you for the review. i like your speaking pace . it is friendly for a non-native speaker like me. i am glad you mentioned the accidental activate problem. also a natural color finish lover. thanks again. good job !!
New subscriber here. No that was a good video!! You held the flashlight still while it was in your hand and I could actually see it. Can't wait to see your other vids.
I saw cr123 battery's in a gas station out in the boonies for over $15 for 1 fuckin battery......WOW, good thing I have rechargeable and solar charger 🇺🇸👍🔦
Nice review! I just had an issue with my carry light, where it's short throw side switch broke and no longer clicks on or off. Its a Spark SL5 220CW. I carried it daily for 8 months and now it's switch is broken, although it also has a rear switch. My worry is with these short press electronic switches. I had a Zebralight SC52 that had a great side switch that had a long, relatively stiff press to turn it on, and it was well recessed into the light. That prevents accidental on. But it was also very tough a durable as switches go, unlike the Spark switch. How much pressure is required to activate the S1A switch and does it feel durable enough to last a few years of every day carry?
Thanks for sharing Highlander. I think the switch on this light "feels" really solid. My only concern with serious EDC use would be the switch boot/cover. If you put this in and out of a fifth pocket every day for 2 years I'm guessing that would be the thing that might wear out.
Hi Chris, I prefer the over all design of the zebra. I like its finish and the reflector for most jobs. However I like the user interface of the S1A better, and appreciate the weight savings for long trips (hiking etc) all be it small. At close range like in a camping tent the beam is better also.
Really a good light, but it turns on in the case/pocket too often. Poor switch placement. Now for a tailcap switch, 5 levels and AA/14500 capacity plus 150/500 Lumens for under $20... Check out Thorfire TG06S on Amazon. $16.80 to be exact....
Yeah but will it hold up threw the years after being used? That's one thing I've noticed about cheap lights...they work great new but few months later it's broke
subscribed n liked too.. nice review.. especially when u verified the actual lumens.. can u tell me why do u use a pvc look alike tube and make it shape like that? thx mate
Thank you audy. That PVC tube collects all of the light and integrates is for a more accurate measurement. I have a video here that explains a bit about it if you would like to see more. ruclips.net/video/xOE1ykJ5WAU/видео.html
Excellent video, well done. What 14500 do you recommend for this light? I've seen forum posts about different lengths among these batteries and I'm worried about fit and performance.
Thank you Juan. This is my favorite 15400. asflashlights.com/batteries-and-chargers/108-14500-windyfire-600ma-37v-aa-size.html If you prefer protected cells I would say the Olight brand are plenty good for this light.
That on/off power button has been a deal breaker for me since my first olight... I'd rather have another half inch of barrel, with a tail click button. Otherwise I love olight... But every since the first time I pulled one out of my pocket and it was running, I've spent my money with other manufacturers.
Hmmm. The only thing that short I can thing of would be something with guppy2drv in it. asflashlights.com/home/47-convoy-s2-915-lumen-18350-xpg3-s5.html It can be programmed to memorize the strobe mode. All the extra "stuff" can also be locked out so you don't hit it on accident.

It is impressive, but mostly because it's using a AA. My EDC zebra H600 can do 1500lm, albeit for a few minutes before I thermally regulates down to several hundred
Hi Nemo. If you mean a turbo timer, yes there is. On high mode you get 110 min at 220 lumen then it drops to 100 lumen. In turbo mode the timer kicks in after 60 seconds.
No, i mean "timermode" Both Olight S1 Baton and Olight S2 Baton has an function that if you doubleclick when it's on it goes in to timermode, it lights for eather nine or three minutes before it turns of. You change those two modes by doubleclicking again, if three min on it blink once if nine min on it blink twice. I have found this feature very useful.
Ohhhhh, my bad. Yes this light does have that. This one works just like you describe. I noticed just now on the S2R the acess has changed. Now rather than a double click from on, its a single click and a press to access this. I am curious what do you use that for most often?
I'm a big fan of olights small lights with magnets in the end, I have one hanging in each lamp at home in case of power failure. Along with a diffuser it lit up fantastically well with a wide and evenly shine. I have also supplemented the lights with magnets which makes it easy to take them down and put them up. I bring a link so you can see how the magnets look: www.biltema.se/sv/Fritid/Fiske/Klader/Magnethallare-2-st-2000035048/ Small key ring magnets that fit perfectly on the end of the lamp and they are strong enough so that there is not a chance that the light falls down by itself. If you hang up the magnet in a thread it makes it so convenient and easy to hang up and take down the lamp. When you hang it upp it's enough just to get near the magnet with the lamp and they smack together. Perfect in a tent camping or otherwheres you need a light above you and at the same time have easy access to it if you want to take it down. I have an OLIGHT S2 hanging in my bedroom as an "nighlamp"when i need to visit the toilet at night.Three minutes of moonlight is all i need to make what i have to do and when i come back my eyes is not bothered by any strong light and i just have to go to bed again without worry about turn it of. Perfect when camping and you need some light to get set and ready to sleep, The light then tuck you in and say goodnight when you finaly got in your sleepingbag..haha.. :)
I’ve owned many lights, including this, though In my humble opinion, the best overall is lighting instrument avail today is the Zebralight SC63/64. With the relatively diminutive size & weight vs crazy output(1600 linens) & battery capacity (3500mAh). There’s no AA light even close when compared
600 lumens...? Pretty much any info on LEDs....even the newest only make a little over 100 lumens per watt...so, that sure would shorten the single cell battery life here...
Me. There are times when I get tired of all the hooplah. Mos lights I use myself are clickie type with 3 basic modes. When I send lights to friends or older folks, I usually install a driver that is single mode or maybe 2 mode etc. Sometimes I just go to walmart and get an on/off light there :)
The Weknd ; That’s Matt’s LED chipset making adjustments on the fly. Do you have any idea how much knowledge is stuffed into that cranium? LED/LEP technology is no joke son.
In my opinion this is just an inferior knock off version of the original zebralight. Do yourself a favor, just spend the extra $10 and get the real thing. All the problems with this light are solved with the zebralight.
XV30 Lowrider it's only capable of 600 lumens for like what? 30 seconds? In my opinion that's not a 600 lumen light. That's false advertising. That's like when you drive by Uhaul, and they have a sign out front in big letters RENT FOR $19.99 A DAY. Go into Uhaul with a 20 dollar bill and slap it down on the counter and tell them you want to rent the truck and here is your 20 dollars. They'll laugh you out of the place. The lights are the same way. 2000 LUMENS GET YOUR LIGHT NOW, BEST I THE MARKET. Yeah, it last for 20 seconds burns your fingers and then bumps down to 100 lumens.
XV30 Lowrider there are pleanty of people that look at the 600 lumens as sustainable. They are not flashlight experts. It's MISLEADING. Just like come rent a truck for 19.99 dollars. It's like saying how much it weighs without the battery in it. Who cares how much it weighs with not battery in it? It's MISLEADING. How much does a gun weigh? The manufacturer tells you without bullets and sometimes without a magazine in it. Who is going to carry and unloaded gun with no magazine in it? Why do I care how much it weighs without the bullets. It's MISLEADING. If you don't see that then you are either not too bright or you drank the cool-aid.
XV30 Lowrider what the hell are you whining about. I'm talking about how the industry is misleading. A lot of them are. I said if you can't see that your not too bright. I'm being a smart ass. Go stand in your safe zone.
XV30 Lowrider you are a ridiculous person. You didn't understand what I said. You misunderstood it and took it as a personal attack. That was not my intention. If you took it that way then it's on you.
Is there any way to mount this on a pistol? I've been looking for a pistol light that uses AA batteries so I don't have to worry about finding 123 batteries. Especially for when SHTF AA would be easier to obtain.
It might not lend itself well to that but it might be possible to mount a attachment to the light to fit an accessory rail on a pistol. You might have to mod it to take a remote switch so you can turn it on with your weapon hand.

BEST flashlight channel on the internet.
I bought the Olight S1A onlone for my dad's 75th B-Day yesterday. He loves it! I did purchase it because of your detailed review. Thank you :)

The info that the magnet is removable was very helpful!
Well done Matt. Always enjoy your reviews!
Thanks again Steve..
Totally agree about the user interface. Olight has the best UI on the market IMHO. The S1 series is my go to light now for work and EDC.
Also like the UI on my Sofirn SP- 10 v3!

Thank you baseballman, that means a lot :)
Wonder how this compares to the Manker e11 (AA, 800 Lumen).
I saw cr123 battery's in a gas station out in the boonies for over $15 for 1 fuckin battery......WOW, good thing I have rechargeable and solar charger 🇺🇸👍🔦
does look a great little edc torch, just the 14500 requirement for the 600 lumen let's it down. But 220 lumen with as is good.

Nice video and subbed your channel.
Thank you. Have you got a video about that shelter thats in our avatar? If so shoot me a link.

How do you find this compares to the SC52 for a small EDC light?
Hi Chris,
I prefer the over all design of the zebra.
$16.80 to be exact....

can you recommend a compact one that has a memory on strobe because that is what I need for self defense at night
Hi Nomadunlimited. How small does it need to be, will an 18650 size light work, or do you want smaller?
as much as possible around 3inches but not longer than 3 1/2
Hmmm. The only thing that short I can thing of would be something with guppy2drv in it.
asflashlights.com/home/47-convoy-s2-915-lumen-18350-xpg3-s5.html
It can be programmed to memorize the strobe mode. All the extra "stuff" can also be locked out so you don't hit it on accident.
thanks so much
I like the on off..
Does this light have low voltage protection when using 14500 batteries?
извини что только сейчас пишу и делаю это на русском. скажи пожалуйста можно использовать все виды батарейки 14500 или нет.
You never said how much !!!...will it cost ?
Good point Brian. This light retails for around $49.95

@@metaljew4456 thanks dad
I bought one of these at a gun show a year ago, and it broke the 2nd day of owning it, not a quality product, it's cool but not worth the price.
Well damn they just think of everything don't they.
In my opinion this is just an inferior knock off version of the original zebralight. Do yourself a favor, just spend the extra $10 and get the real thing. All the problems with this light are solved with the zebralight.
So basically it's a 220 lumen light.
Go have another glass of cool-aid.
Sadly this unit is NO MAS.
Unlistenable! Sorry
Hi Scott, Thanks for sharing. Are you saying your having trouble with the sound on the video, or that you hear it and don't like what I said?
600 Lumens, yeah, for 1 minute only and using 14500.. and IMO, its overpriced.. ill go for skilhunt e2a.
Dove si compra ?????
Is there any way to mount this on a pistol?
I've been looking for a pistol light that uses AA batteries so I don't have to worry about finding 123 batteries.
Especially for when SHTF AA would be easier to obtain.
It might not lend itself well to that but it might be possible to mount a attachment to the light to fit an accessory rail on a pistol. You might have to mod it to take a remote switch so you can turn it on with your weapon hand.
