Thanks for the great tips Mick. I have an Ocea Jigger 1500 and 2000 and much prefer the handle on the bigger reel. Never thought of swapping the handle before. I’ll be hitting up the local tackle store for an upgrade tomorrow!
Yeah mate, it’s gotta be comfortable! I noticed I wasn’t using the right combo a lot of the time as I didn’t like the feel of the one I should have been using… this way it doesn’t matter which rod I pick up, they’re all exactly how I like it 👌🏻
Nice combo! I generally use a #5 in both splits and solid, like with barra lures you gotta balance it out, you want strength, but small profile and light weight to not affect the lures performance. All my terminals for all my fishing BKK mate, bloody good company and products tailored to our fishery! 🍻
Hi mick love ya vids , you have got me right into slow pitch jigging love it I do struggle with technique 😩 need more practice I guess any good Tips to help ? Thanks mate 🎣🎣
Thanks mate!! Watch closely the actions I make.. also go onto Doc Lures Podcast and have a listen.. I did one with him on Slow Pitch like 2 weeks ago and a lot of what I do is explained well on that!
Unreal video mate thanks heaps for all the info. Legend of a bloke helping out those just getting started! What online fishing shop do you recommend? Or do you shop in store? Thanks again mick 👍
Thanks mate!! I generally shop locally where I can, it’s rare I need to buy stuff online.. I like going into the shops to talk fishing with the lads in store!
Hey Mick , another great video and great information. I will be starting to tie my leader straight to the solid ring on the hooks instead of direct to the lure. Given the ring on the BKK is quite square on the edges , do you have an issues with the ring cutting through the line on the loop knot? Cheers mate and thanks again for sharing your valuable knowledge
Thanks mate, the edges on the ring has never caused me any grief and I’ve put a lot of time in on a single knot so I doubt it’ll be of any concern to you 👌🏻
Great content. Thanks Mick. Interested in your feedback on the Certate reel. I'm tossing up between the Certate and the Twin Power at the moment in a 5000 size spin for casting with the Focal pe3....
I’d recommend the twin power, I bought the Certate first (6 months ago), and while it is nice to use, it spent the first 3 months out of action back at Daiwa getting fixed after it’s first fish, so I bought the twin power cos I was without a reel for months and it’s been flawless. The punishment it’s had on bigger fish is a testament to it and I doubt the Daiwa would have it in it to catch the same caliber of fish…
Hey mate, Epic video. Any recommendations on a light bottom bashing bait setup? Currently Using a nomad pe2-4 which is a jigging setup. The split rear grip is something i like! Love to find something out there similar but for bait.
@@Micksgonefishing Thanks for your response. Prob should clarify what I'm trying to say as an amateur fisherman. Looking for a rod to chase some legal-size trout. Prob on that PE3 size range. Just to chuck, some squid on. The nomad rods are epic. They fold away because of that porbalic action. Got a DB SOLID rod as a vibe rod nice and soft in the tip for working those vibes. Any recommendations would be epic love trying new kit?
What is your opinion about jigging/casting gloves? Do you think that they are a good thing to wear especially when half pitching to make your day more comfortable?
I usually only run gloves on heavier tackle from pe5 and up if I’m chasing really big and fast fish. With this slow pitch thing, even though it is 50lb tackle its still a finesse style of fishing, a bite can be very subtle on the drop so I prefer to be able to feel as much as possible. Each to their own but yeah no gloves most of the time for me..
Hi Mick, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I notice your recommended jig range on the PE3 is 60 -130g while OL recommends 120-300g. Why do you recommend a lower jig rating for that rod? I currently run a PE3 with 100 and 120g jigs but it's pretty flimsy fighting nannies and reds in 65m. Considering a PE4 but not sure if it will suit 100 and 120g jigs?
Hey Mate, no problem 😉 If you watch the technique I’m using it’s called a half pitch (half handle turn) but snatching the rod to load it up then let it release is what gets the directional change on the lure end.. the lighter the jig, means less resistance so I need to snatch it more to get the pop. The ratings on a lot of these rods are based on using the reel only to load the rod tip to get the release of energy which pops the jig. But with short sharp rips you can still pop a 60g jig with a pe3 even though it’s rated at 100g+. The Pe3 is fine for reds and nanny’s, it is sporting and you won’t win them all but it does get a good action at the jig end and that’s what’s required a lot of the time to get the fish. Just remember to fight the fish with the bottom half of the rod, the top half of a slow pitch rod has zero power and is made to work the jig, down low is where the power is, when they’re loaded properly the pe3 has ALOT more power than you realize..
@@Micksgonefishing thanks Mick - appreciate your time to respond - some interesting information and I also got some good info to select on offshore soft plastic and vibing rod from this video. I have seen your half pitch technique. How did you decide that it's more effective than some of the other slower techniques such as using the reel only, or slow rod lifts?
Trial and error really, when I started trying to really understand slow pitching it was back in 2014 roughly and there wasn’t a great deal of tackle available locally nor information on it for our species. I started with lighter rods which were more suited to the jig weights and trialed all the techniques and with the lighter rods I could just use the reel to work the lure effectively but as soon as I hooked anything decent I was under gunned… I found the really slow styles attracted a lot of cod, stripeys and less desirable fish, it wasn’t until I worked out that with the heavier rod required to handle our species a bit of a pop of the rod tip was needed to maintain the action I was getting with the light rods, I find the slower I work my jigs the more scavenger type species I catch (alot of the time anyway) and I found the more aggressive and more desirable fish like a medium speed and a walking action to entice them.
I went into tackle world chasing a nice light rod for bottom bashing baits and they set me up with one of those slow elements 😂😂😂 and now I here mick saying there not the best for it lol, he broke my heart was an $900 combo lol, anyway
Slow element or Deep element? The Deep Element is a good baito rod, the slow element is more purpose made for jigging.. And if it is the slow element, well now you have an excuse to ditch the bait 🤷🏼♂️😂 Pe 3 or Pe4? I reckon the pe4 could efficiently set a 6/0 without fully loading it…
Thanks for the vid mate! What sort of cast weights were you throwing with your OL cloud 9 pe2? I was getting a pe1.5 but wasn’t sure if I could overload the cast weight on it
Thanks mate 🍻 personally I prefer the pe2 Focal over the pe2 Cloud 9, the focal is a bit faster and more of an all rounder where the Cloud 9 is more of a up and down, vertical fishing type of rod. If you’re doing more casting I’d check out the focal, or if you want it mainly for vibing or jigging plastics then the cloud 9 is epic 👌🏻
It fucks with my ocd that the pe3 element start at such a high jig weight rating, wanna get an o/h combo but feel the pe2 blank won’t be enough for bigger reds but is more in the weight range of the jigs I’d use. You reckon your not missing out on anything running 80-100g jigs on the pe3? Cheers 🍻
Nah the pe3 slow element is a little bit slower than the Elementus which helps smaller jigs load the rod, you just need to add a little bit more pop to the lifts to get the rod to load and work it properly..

Haha thanks mate! As you can see, I like shopping too 😂👌🏻
hy mic .. like your set tackle ... nice for slow jigging
Yeah I have expensive taste but I need tools that can keep up so I always buy the best!
