I can somewhat understand why people would get upset about Nazis in anime or a deliberate salute/cosplay related to Nazis. However, that symbol of peace shouldn't be censored or hated because it looks similar to a swastika. People need to grow up and stop getting offended by silly things.
What would be great is if people in the West knew enough about Buddhism to know what that symbol is. Unfortunately, East-West cultural exchange does not seem to have extended to this.
Big issue I have with this list: "The Manga" that Cleary is referring to is the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga that was done by known doujinshi/adult content artist Toshihiro Ono. Generally, when people hear "the [Pokemon] Manga", they think of Pokemon Adventures/Pokemon Special....which has its own bundle of issues, doesn't it,
You forgot the Japanese version of the opening theme where it says to find them all even "under girl's skirts" as Pikachu runs under the girl and she grabs her skirt
@Rockin' Roll Given the scenes in question involved a kid even younger than her and her traveling companions that are about her age I don't see how pedophilia is relevant, also, SHE'S A FICTIONAL CHARACTER. Someone literally just decided what her age is, its an anime, they could make her 100 and still have her look the same.
Considering "weebs" are generally virgins who would always prefer fictional 2D character to real people, it's very unlikely that this would make them interested in real children whatsoever. Seriously, no real 12-years old dresses up and has the look and body like Misty, and if they do, then you should be concerned with her parents first before anything else.
That was not a Nazi salute in the anime. It is a similar-looking salute (similar-looking, but not exactly the same looking) that is/was often done in Japanese middle school and high school sports competition ceremonies. That scene in the anime had Team Rocket winning a Pokemon competition. They were doing the middle/high school sports competition salute because they were in a Pokemon competition. It was a sports competition joke/reference. It wasn't a Nazi joke/reference. If you happen to walk by a Japanese school during a sports competition ceremony, you might see that salute now in 2019. It's not a Nazi salute. It's not even the same arm/hand movements.
@EmperorBubba Why can't people outside of Japan learn about the culture of Japan? Why is learning about someone else's culture such a weird concept? But okay, some people don't want to learn. Fine. But (but again) you have learned now. Just now. I've told you what it is, so now you have no excuse to think it's the Nazi salute. And again, it's not even the same arm/hand movements as the Nazi salute.
@EmperorBubba The Nazi salute wasn't a military salute. The Nazi salute was a political salute. It was a political salute used by German civilians. The German military (generally speaking*) did not use the Nazi salute. The German military (again, generally speaking*) used its traditional military salute instead. *There was some use of the salute by the German military, of course.
The hidden pokeball thing was in Gen 5, Misty has no set age in the games (though that doesn’t excuse the anime or having a hentai artist draw an official manga, even if it was only one official manga out of many), for the Grimer card the upskirt is a cultural joke (the original theme song even has a line “under that girl’s skirt” as Pikachu runs under her) though I agree it doesn’t translate worldwide.
mad lightning That wasn’t my point (though I do disagree with you to a point). My point was them hiring that guy to draw an official manga is the equivalent of Disney hiring Shadman to design their movie posters.
Mauricio Loya the point isn’t that drawing hentai doesn’t mean you don’t have any talent, the point is that their main claim to fame is that they draw hentai. I think the Shadman argument is still the best comparison. No matter how nasty or sickening the subject of some of his drawings are, the guy clearly has talent. That doesn’t mean Disney should go hiring him for official projects.
So the Goosestep from the Lion King is okay, but not the salute? Despite the director of the Lion King explicitly stating that the Hyenas' march was a direct reference?
My guess is that people are more ok with animals doing it as a reference than with humans doing it. Personally I'm not bothered by it unless the reference is trying to say that Nazis were/are good people.

I get the comparison to black face with jynx... but ganguro is definitely not the same as black face. they’re just meant to be tanned, as a form of rebellion against the traditional Japanese beauty ideals of pale skin and dark hair (ganguro is the opposite - tanned/bronzed skin and bleached hair usually).
Wow, whoever wrote this doesn't like research beyond age. On top of that the person reading the script didn't try to think otherwise. Misty isn't as sexualized as other 10-12 year olds in the manga. Sure raunchy things in Pokemon, not included here is how you get TM Flash in Black and White. You go down an alleyway and a guy hidden behind a dumpster "has something special for you under his coat". At which point you get Flash. There's little visual difference between the "Nazi salute" and kids raising their hands in class to ask a question, so why was the pokemon episode a no-go while school manners aren't?
That's a horrible argument. That was a straight up salute that looked like the nazi salute. That wasn't a raise hand. That was a slight angle. Try going back to school and instead of raising your hand straight up point it down a little more and see what happens.

If she were indeed 12 in the RBY games, then she would be 15 in the GSC games(since they take place 3 years after).

Oof, swing and a miss there guys! Kadabra's Japanese name is Yunghelor. Uri Geller case was the fact that a pokemon had a very similar name, and also used psychic powers to bend spoons (which was his entire shtick) basically infringed on the only two things associated with his "fame".

The easternmost point of Australia is within half a degree of longitude of the easternmost point of Japan, so describing it as part of "the west" is a bit of a misnomer. More to the point, the episode in question did not air in the US, which is all the research that anyone writing this likely did. Whether it aired elsewhere was not taken into consideration.
Yea pretty much. Everybody has been using their own standards to judge other cultures for centuries, its slowly changing but yea, just yea..... The world needs to chill.....

Too much criticism can kill a perfectly good thing. I'm not blaming you specifically - but this type of overbearing criticism hinders creativity. To the point of possibly ruining a perfectly good story. So there's a peeping tom? So what? A guy talks about real life problems? And children will read it?! God forbid! This is why Pokemon, which started out as a really funny show, has turned mellow & bland. You can't please everyone, right? But you try - you become grayish & dull. As a perfect example: Dragon Ball was a hilarious Manga. I read it when I was 16, and it had some funny sexually-oriented jokes. Master Roshi wanted Bulma to take off her clothes so he could see her panties. There were some very funny moments! All of this - and other - aspects of the humor were completely demolished, because of such overbearing criticism. A "pervert"? In a show for kids?! Let's pretend these things don't exist. Let's just all pretend we're completely a-sexual! Sexuality is a part of life. Laughing about it is the single best way to accept & embrace it. Teaching our children to laugh about it - is the single best approach in my opinion. Criticizing everything in an attempt to make it "PC" - is an effort which befits totalitarian regimes, and bears rotten fruits called "censorship". Eventually - children WILL find out about "perverts" & sexuality - they'll find out while nobody's looking. Last but not least: children will not understand a breastfeeding joke?... you've got to be kidding, right? Children are the FIRST to understand those jokes. How extremely uptight, overbearing. Just... pffft
I hear the artist of many of the manga was also an accomplished hentai artist... so yeah, what do you think is gonna happen when you ask him to draw female characters?
To be slightly fairer to Uri Geller, the Japanese name for Kadabra is Yungerer. The Japanese character for n is fairly visually similar to the character for ri. It was intentionally named as a slight corruption of Yuri Geller. Abra's name in Japanese is also a reference to a claimed psychic, and Alakazam is named after Houdini. Though, if anything, Geller should have been honored. After all, Kadabra actually is psychic, while Geller is just a fraud. When Kadabra bends a spoon, there's no cheating involved.
Wasn't "Houdini" itself derived from "Robert-Houdin"? And Spike Lee sued over "Spike TV", so Geller isn't the only one to have pulled that sort of stunt.
"In pokemon x and y..." *uses black and white* "Misty is 12 years old..." *shes a cartoon who doesn't exist* "Pokemon is racist" *the show never uses racist slurs and only people who wanted to see black face saw black face* Let me enjoy my fucking show.
At no point do you mention that Kadabra's Japanese name is a corruption of Uri Geller's name. The way you talked about it, you made it seem like Uri Geller is crazy to think Kadabra is based on him. He may or may not be crazy for other reasons, but not this particular reason, lol.
Jonathan BarSela Alakazam’s Japanese name is a reference to Harry Houdini. Kadabra’s Japanese name is a reference to Uri Geller. And Abra’s Japanese name is a reference to yet another person (Edgar Cayce).
I thought of a much better way to think of Pokemon battles, anyway, and that is more like boxing, UFC fighting, or pro wrestling, and the reason why they merely faint usually is because it has safety measures in place to make sure things don't go horribly, horribly wrong. Things unfortunately can still go wrong, and the reason why wild Pokemon still only faint when you face off against them is also because of trainers enacting these safety measures if their own Pokemon still want to go at the wild Pokemon even after they'd fainted.
not sure if it was mentioned, the particular manga you're referencing was a one-off series done by a mangaka who usually draws hentai doujin and tried to imply she was in her mid-late teens. it was heavily edited for the US market but regardless ran about 12 chapters and was cancelled.
*in a Bill Clinton voice* "You know the best part of these pokemon girls, I keep gettin' older but they stay the same age." Lol it is weird, I first encountered Misty at 4 years old.

@Rockin' Roll age of concent in Japan is 13. So it's not "pedo" at all🤷♂️ I don't think you even know the proper meaning of that word
Considering "weebs" are generally virgins who would always prefer fictional 2D character to real people, it's very unlikely that this would make them interested in real children whatsoever.

If there isn't then all you have to say is "she was OK with it and she recently shaved"
It's animated it's not harming anyone it's not real life people want to draw lewd's of an animated character let em.
Technically, that would make her... at least 16 in gen 2?
mad lightning That wasn’t my point (though I do disagree with you to a point). My point was them hiring that guy to draw an official manga is the equivalent of Disney hiring Shadman to design their movie posters.
George Glover you do know several hentai artists have gone on to make very successful mangas right
Mauricio Loya the point isn’t that drawing hentai doesn’t mean you don’t have any talent, the point is that their main claim to fame is that they draw hentai.
Yes, because Disney good Japan scary.
Nah but it's really probably because most people recognize one but not so much the other :b
My guess is that people are more ok with animals doing it as a reference than with humans doing it. Personally I'm not bothered by it unless the reference is trying to say that Nazis were/are good people.

It's funny you mention the Safari Zone episode with all the guns not airing in the west. I for some reason can remember Ash catching all of the Tauros and I've lived in Australia all my life, so that shouldn't be possible
So i really should have held on to those kadabra cards huh. Sounds like they might be worth something now
Misty’s body is definitely accurate for a twelve year old even in the manga there is a clear difference from her body there and an adult woman’s body

So basically the big problems are western sensibilities and cultural differences
Yea pretty much. Everybody has been using their own standards to judge other cultures for centuries, its slowly changing but yea, just yea..... The world needs to chill.....
good luck with that ever happening. people are getting more & more offended by ever smaller issues these days. i truly fear for my children when i ever have them. my 8 yr old son could give a girl classmate a birthday card then he'd get a sexual harassment charge for it.
You keep harping on Misty's age, but I've personally met girls just as young as her, and even some who were younger, who had more developed figures. Not that significant to me.
Just... pffft
The Tauros Episode did air in Sweden, i think its just certain areas that got shafted, not everyone outside Asia.
I hear the artist of many of the manga was also an accomplished hentai artist... so yeah, what do you think is gonna happen when you ask him to draw female characters?
Another reason Uri Gellar sued Nintendo over Kadabra is because its name in Japan was "Un Gellar"
Pokemon offices in the west: "We want our target audience to be young children".
Pokemon offices in the east: "Hmm... hold that thought...

@Tarhunt II Ha! Good one
Well swastika was actually a Hindu symbol.
So apparently everyone is going to jail now.
