Tony could fight man. I have a lot of respect for how this fight went down. The video does it better justice. There was more holding than it seems but they were in great shape to still be so active in the later rounds. Heavyweights just don't go like that anymore
We're giving an in shape Tucker credit for going the distance with a guy who was 6" shorter, serious reach disadvantage, out worked Tucker, won every round and only hit Tyson with (what I counted) 3 clean shots. Also, it appears that at round 5, Tucker knew he was beaten, lost steam and started to clown. But yeah,,,,, he went the distance.

Excellent point. Rooney had Tyson's ear- plus he was a protégé of Cus, so he had Mike's respect. This fight is one of the best examples of Rooney's influence. He was perfect for Mike. Rooney's Tyson was undefeated.

TYSON had some real hard fights like this from time to time like for example: Razor Rudduck, Bone Crusher Smith etc etc yet TYSON in my book will always be 'The Most Exciting Fighter Ever' at his best he looked unbeatable.

Tyson had a run for his money, got a fighter who wasn't intimidated, Tucker fought back very well, Tyson frustrated if Tucker had the power he would have flawed Tyson.
Tyson the legend is obviously of the star of the match but this Tony Tucker guy is an amazing and incredible boxer. The skill, the speed, the movement, defence, switching and shifting, jabs and uppercuts! He gave a prime Mike one of his hardest fights and it made for an incredible show. Beautiful fight 👏

Dude 80s real Mike Tyson was disciplined, calm and had better defense. Once Tyson got lazy, drugs, women and alcohol took over he had lost his speed and defense, power was still there but he took too many shots. Larry Holmes gave Tyson a bit of trouble with his jab. Buster Douglas was way powerful and stronger than Tyson but Tyson had lost his speed due to his partying ways.
Nah this and the earlier fight with "bonecrusher" smith , proved tyson wasnt an undefeatable monster . quality fighters with reach and speed could mix it with mike and eventually defeat him. Anyone who keeps using this "in his prime" cliche should notice that tyson was winning and knocking out opponents leading up to and after the defeat by buster douglas. Tyson very good, but not top 5 in all time heavyweight list tho .
and if you look at Tyson pre prison fights, even in the fights that went to full 12 rounds, Mike still looked fresh after the fight as if he would easily go 15 round if needed.
Let me just say this ...Tyson when he first came on the seen he had it all head movement..he had great body shots and jabs...By the time he fought Lewis and Holyfield he didn't have Kavin Rooney in his corner then he lost like 3 years out of the ring....But this Tyson here was the best of his generation....

Notice Tyson here had the ability to out jab much taller opponent and slipped punches well. Both these traits had disappeared by the time he faced Buster Douglas. I think this version of Tyson would defeat Douglas and Lennox Lewis and Holyfield.
Mark Phelps Every Tyson fan wishes to believe that. I myself used to. The truth is Lennox´s jab was far faster, harder and more accurate than Tucker´s was. Aside from him being a much better fighter in every other aspect. He specially had much more speed and power on his punches, and Tucker landed plenty on Mike. Lennox would have done much more harm. In reality, at his prime Mike would have done much better against Lewis and would have had a much better chance of landing KO punches on Lennox and putting him out than when they actually fought and Tyson looked embarrassing and completely below Lennox´s level. But even at his prime, Mike would have had few chances, would have eaten a great amount of jabs and strong straight rights, and would have been frustrated and confused by the middle of the fight.
Gerry No everyone shows less and less movement as the fight wore on...however, Tyson and his movement literally went away after a few rounds when he separated from his old training camp and management...his lifestyle changed for the worse and his training with it....just look at Tyson's corner for the douglas fight..horrible..look at Tyson's conditioning for the douglas fight? Respect, to stand fifteen rounds against Tyson in his prime is an enormous performance. Tucker was very athletic and combined with his speed and taller range it was hard for Tyson to knock him out easily. Also great compilation of the fight, the background music let it appear more epic, than the fight already was.
Tyson was shorter and stockily built, so it was much easier for him to generate momentum in his punches. Many of the taller fighters ended up easily off balance doing this, so tended not to put all of their body into their shots.

I noticed Tucker was getting off 1st with combinations & not just single shots. He also tied Tyson up to avoid damage on the inside. Those tactics are what kept him in the fight. Smart

Mike fights in the toughest division in all of history. After watching tucker avoid almost every punch from tyson by moving back from his punches to take the least amount of damage possible, I don’t even think ali can beat this guy. They both have similar style and Ali was slightly faster on his feet due to his weight but tucker packs a much stronger punch and too tough to be knocked out.

Spinks was like a whipped dog walking into the ring to face Tyson - there wasn't an ounce of fight in him, and subsequently i can't credit Tyson for anything special in the way he dispatched him because Spinks had already lost before a punch was thrown... see the difference here with Tucker who clearly fancied a fight... Tyson was never unbeateable, even in his early career - Styles make fights...
But why was Spinks, a guy who had showed heart and toughness throughout his long career, "whipped" before the fight? Because he knew he was facing a prime guy who was faster than him and had way more power. Spinks knew he didn't have a chance. That's why he was scared s&itless.
Mark Phelps Spinks did his best but he was way too small. Tyson hit a lot of clowns in their stomach and they didn't go down like that. Spinks was only a middle weight in the Olympics, he couldn't withstand that body shot. And Spinks had defended well that's why Tyson went to the body. And Spinks got up and didn't run. He came back throwing. He never ran. Look at the fight again, Spinks initially defended his head well. He got hit in the head when he tried to exchange punches with Tyson. Spinks is lucky he didn't get seriously hurt fighting someone that thicker and stronger than him. Pound for pound Spinks is a better boxer than Tyson in my opinion.
Forgotten how damn good this fight was. Tyson the unrelenting in your face fighter and Tucker the boxer man mountain with moves. I really enjoyed this fight and kinda got a sense Tyson knew he'd fought one of his best fights. Hats off to both guys and big respect for a great contest.

Tyson is one of the greatest infighters that boxing world ever produced. Lot of tall boxers got knocked down by Tyson when he was in prime. Tony Tucker did not allow Tyson to come inside. Tyson or any other short boxer for that matter, would go inside by taking few punches & jabs from tall boxer to unlease uppercut followed by left/right hooks before knocking down. Infighting boxers such as Tyson, Riddick Bowe are always interesting to watch in heavyweight division. Fully confident Tyson was wondering how to break Tucker,s defense. This fight might have created some doubts in Tyson,s mind about his supremacy at that point of time and ultimately happened with Douglas. Tyson might have won the contest. This should have been declared draw in my opinion.
This fight also clearly shows that a prime Mike Tyson would have beaten Lennox Lewis in his prime. Lennox Lewis was very similar in height and stature to Tony Tucker and had Tyson fought him earlier in his career it would have been a win.

@@ald1050 Everyone always talks about a prime Tyson but Tyson and Lewis are the same age at 52. Holifield beat up Tyson sparring before the pros. Lewis and Bowe had fast monster jabs and viscous upper cuts and were much bigger and stronger fighters. It's not a fair argument to put Tyson in his prime but disregard the other 90s Heavyweight champions prime days, these guys just took off in the 90s, Tyson couldn't keep up. Lastly, Tyson's 1980s opponents overall were horrible, the 1990s Heavyweight division was terrible.

I would just add that in Tyson's defence had he not got rid of his trainer Kevin Rooney and changed his own boxing style half way through his career he may have been able to keep up with the other boxers. Also his prison sentence was the nail in the coffin in terms of being a top heavyweight fighter. 3 years without boxing or keeping himself in shape was too long.

I agree with the changing of trainers and the jail time spent may have hurt him but he did become champion again. You could see Tyson's skills start to deteriorate in his first fight against Frank Bruno. Once he won the title he couldn't handle all the fame and money that came with it....
In his autobiography he mentioned barely training at all for this fight. You can tell this was the case from his head movement or lack of, repeating the same punch consecutively, lack of combinations, footwork was slacking, he looked podgy by his standards.
+MultiGreat1 they started to erode when he fired kevin rooney in 89. kevin was still there for this fight. his skills were still there. its just sometimes opponents dont cooperate for what ever reason. most of the time the other guy just might have a style that worked for somebody and it gives the other guy problems. and tucker also had a good chin which always helps. Ive seen mike crumble guys with those same shots, but this guy wasnt cooperating.

I think his fight with Tyrrel Biggs is one of his best, not a great opponent and Biggs did have a lot of problems at that time but Tyson toyed with him and did pretty much nothing wrong in that fight.
watching this shows me that Tyson couldn't beat Muhammad Ali from in his prime.. Ali reflexes were much better. than tucker. lateral movement was much better head movement hand speed foot speed etc..
Ali had superior hand to eye coordination. I too believe if Ali met Tyson in his prime, that Ali would prevail. Ali was a ring general that could punch, had high boxing IQ and was game to the core. Ali would've took Tyson to that deep water and simply drowned him.
If Tyson and Ali were to fight in their prime, Tyson would've ducked his punches just like he has done with everyone else and knocked Ali clean out. Tyson doesn't have to make up the fear factor it just comes along with his persona. Ali, on the other hand, depended on psychological tactics, he would be non-stop talking, belittling and frustrating his opponent into making mistakes. Tyson in his prime was on another level.

Tucker fought an amazing fight vs Tyson. Tyson was the champ in this fight, controlled the center of the ring, and dished out the bigger punches, which is probably why the judges gave it to him, however, Tucker fought the better fight. Tyson hung out way too much on the center line, attempted no angles, wasn't moving his head consistently and repeatedly thrown the same hook after one slip in a predictable fashion. Tucker had amazing lateral and longitudinal movement, kiting Tyson expertly and effectively firing punches on the move. He countered Tyson often. That counter uppercut in the 1rst off of Tyson's rising jab was beautiful and, if Tyson wasn't changing levels upward, it probably would've knocked him down. Tyson fought a really bad fight, although he had plenty of great counters, hard hits and surprisingly beat Tucker's longer jab with his own in many exchanges. Apparently he didn't train very long for this fight, a habit he unfortunately kept later in his career. Champions are built from a foundation of training and dedication, which they need their whole careers, not just the beginning of it. This is what separates Tyson from true greats. His potential and performance despite training deficiency was great, but his shortcomings cost him notoriety in his losses he never avenged and his legacy will forever be tarnished by those losses he may have overcome if his character and ethic wasn't so porous. Tyson is my favorite boxer, ever, but I realize his flaws. Apologies for the long post, cheers!
NeoGodHand Dont Appologise what you just said summed it up perfectly, tucker stated that people lose to mike before they even enter the ring because they are intimidated by him. tucker said hes not having none of it and he was there to win. this fight shows how tyson struggles with taller fighters which is why although im a major fan of tyson i dont think people like lennox lewis or vitali klitchko would of struggled to a prime tyson. vitali would get the KO and i think lewis would get a points decision.
Tyson's movements were so fast that it was difficult for a taller opponent to generate enough momentum to catch Mike. As they were trying to wind up a big shot Mike already landed 5 lightning fast bombs. Like with Frank Bruno he had knock out power, but Mike's forward aggressive style prevented him from generating momentum also, so all he could do was throw weak pitter-patter shots from the arm.
Tucker reminds me of Daryl the prince of the Soul-Glo fortune (Eriq LaSalle) from Coming to America. For a tall long guy he was quick on his feet and with his hands. Respect.

Tony was not scared like the others and Tyson had to prove himself as a boxer. He proved himself, but not with a KO in the first 3 rounds. Tyson is the best boxer of the 90s. The power of those punches can be seen when a cloud of sweat from Tucker's hair flies onto the crowd. Passionately.

Tony could fight man. I have a lot of respect for how this fight went down. The video does it better justice. There was more holding than it seems but they were in great shape to still be so active in the later rounds. Heavyweights just don't go like that anymore

Also, it appears that at round 5, Tucker knew he was beaten, lost steam and started to clown.

Dude 80s real Mike Tyson was disciplined, calm and had better defense. Once Tyson got lazy, drugs, women and alcohol took over he had lost his speed and defense, power was still there but he took too many shots. Larry Holmes gave Tyson a bit of trouble with his jab. Buster Douglas was way powerful and stronger than Tyson but Tyson had lost his speed due to his partying ways.

Anyone who keeps using this "in his prime" cliche should notice that tyson was winning and knocking out opponents leading up to and after the defeat by buster douglas. Tyson very good, but not top 5 in all time heavyweight list tho .

and if you look at Tyson pre prison fights, even in the fights that went to full 12 rounds, Mike still looked fresh after the fight as if he would easily go 15 round if needed.
Most people think that Tyson always had low stamina, but his prime-fights prove that it's wrong.
Let me just say this ...Tyson when he first came on the seen he had it all head movement..he had great body shots and jabs...By the time he fought Lewis and Holyfield he didn't have Kavin Rooney in his corner then he lost like 3 years out of the ring....But this Tyson here was the best of his generation....

Notice Tyson here had the ability to out jab much taller opponent and slipped punches well. Both these traits had disappeared by the time he faced Buster Douglas. I think this version of Tyson would defeat Douglas and Lennox Lewis and Holyfield.

The truth is Lennox´s jab was far faster, harder and more accurate than Tucker´s was. Aside from him being a much better fighter in every other aspect. He specially had much more speed and power on his punches, and Tucker landed plenty on Mike.
Lennox would have done much more harm.
In reality, at his prime Mike would have done much better against Lewis and would have had a much better chance of landing KO punches on Lennox and putting him out than when they actually fought and Tyson looked embarrassing and completely below Lennox´s level. But even at his prime, Mike would have had few chances, would have eaten a great amount of jabs and strong straight rights, and would have been frustrated and confused by the middle of the fight.

Respect, to stand fifteen rounds against Tyson in his prime is an enormous performance. Tucker was very athletic and combined with his speed and taller range it was hard for Tyson to knock him out easily.

Tyson was shorter and stockily built, so it was much easier for him to generate momentum in his punches. Many of the taller fighters ended up easily off balance doing this, so tended not to put all of their body into their shots.

Mike fights in the toughest division in all of history. After watching tucker avoid almost every punch from tyson by moving back from his punches to take the least amount of damage possible, I don’t even think ali can beat this guy. They both have similar style and Ali was slightly faster on his feet due to his weight but tucker packs a much stronger punch and too tough to be knocked out.

Spinks was like a whipped dog walking into the ring to face Tyson - there wasn't an ounce of fight in him, and subsequently i can't credit Tyson for anything special in the way he dispatched him because Spinks had already lost before a punch was thrown... see the difference here with Tucker who clearly fancied a fight... Tyson was never unbeateable, even in his early career - Styles make fights...
But why was Spinks, a guy who had showed heart and toughness throughout his long career, "whipped" before the fight? Because he knew he was facing a prime guy who was faster than him and had way more power. Spinks knew he didn't have a chance. That's why he was scared s&itless.

Spinks did his best but he was way too small. Tyson hit a lot of clowns in their stomach and they didn't go down like that. Spinks was only a middle weight in the Olympics, he couldn't withstand that body shot. And Spinks had defended well that's why Tyson went to the body. And Spinks got up and didn't run. He came back throwing. He never ran. Look at the fight again, Spinks initially defended his head well. He got hit in the head when he tried to exchange punches with Tyson. Spinks is lucky he didn't get seriously hurt fighting someone that thicker and stronger than him. Pound for pound Spinks is a better boxer than Tyson in my opinion.

Tyson is one of the greatest infighters that boxing world ever produced. Lot of tall boxers got knocked down by Tyson when he was in prime.
Tony Tucker did not allow Tyson to come inside. Tyson or any other short boxer for that matter, would go inside by taking few punches & jabs from tall boxer to unlease uppercut followed by left/right hooks before knocking down. Infighting boxers such as Tyson, Riddick Bowe are always interesting to watch in heavyweight division.
Fully confident Tyson was wondering how to break Tucker,s defense. This fight might have created some doubts in Tyson,s mind about his supremacy at that point of time and ultimately happened with Douglas.

I would just add that in Tyson's defence had he not got rid of his trainer Kevin Rooney and changed his own boxing style half way through his career he may have been able to keep up with the other boxers. Also his prison sentence was the nail in the coffin in terms of being a top heavyweight fighter. 3 years without boxing or keeping himself in shape was too long.

You could see Tyson's skills start to deteriorate in his first fight against Frank Bruno. Once he won the title he couldn't handle all the fame and money that came with it....
In his autobiography he mentioned barely training at all for this fight. You can tell this was the case from his head movement or lack of, repeating the same punch consecutively, lack of combinations, footwork was slacking, he looked podgy by his standards.
+MultiGreat1 they started to erode when he fired kevin rooney in 89. kevin was still there for this fight. his skills were still there. its just sometimes opponents dont cooperate for what ever reason. most of the time the other guy just might have a style that worked for somebody and it gives the other guy problems. and tucker also had a good chin which always helps. Ive seen mike crumble guys with those same shots, but this guy wasnt cooperating.

But to me a prime ali is the ali that beat sonny liston. that ali was barely 200 pounds. i actually think the ali that fought frazier the first time was the best version of ali. he gained a little bit more weight so he had a little bit more power and the added weight helped him take a better shot. and he still was fast as hell. with that being said i think he beats holyfield, he obviously beat foreman, larry holmes is a toss up. i think that would be one of the greatest fights ever. i think he beats joe if he didnt have that long lay off. but it would still been a great fight. but i think a prime mike beats ali. any version of ali

The best? I can't say that, having seen all his fights at least 10 times, I'd say his best were ribalta, spinks, berbick, thomas, and maybe holmes.
That is probably my top 5 fights from him. But tilling is definitely not even his top 10

I think his fight with Tyrrel Biggs is one of his best, not a great opponent and Biggs did have a lot of problems at that time but Tyson toyed with him and did pretty much nothing wrong in that fight.

Ali had superior hand to eye coordination. I too believe if Ali met Tyson in his prime, that Ali would prevail. Ali was a ring general that could punch, had high boxing IQ and was game to the core. Ali would've took Tyson to that deep water and simply drowned him.

If Tyson and Ali were to fight in their prime, Tyson would've ducked his punches just like he has done with everyone else and knocked Ali clean out. Tyson doesn't have to make up the fear factor it just comes along with his persona. Ali, on the other hand, depended on psychological tactics, he would be non-stop talking, belittling and frustrating his opponent into making mistakes. Tyson in his prime was on another level.

Tucker fought an amazing fight vs Tyson. Tyson was the champ in this fight, controlled the center of the ring, and dished out the bigger punches, which is probably why the judges gave it to him, however, Tucker fought the better fight. Tyson hung out way too much on the center line, attempted no angles, wasn't moving his head consistently and repeatedly thrown the same hook after one slip in a predictable fashion. Tucker had amazing lateral and longitudinal movement, kiting Tyson expertly and effectively firing punches on the move. He countered Tyson often. That counter uppercut in the 1rst off of Tyson's rising jab was beautiful and, if Tyson wasn't changing levels upward, it probably would've knocked him down. Tyson fought a really bad fight, although he had plenty of great counters, hard hits and surprisingly beat Tucker's longer jab with his own in many exchanges. Apparently he didn't train very long for this fight, a habit he unfortunately kept later in his career. Champions are built from a foundation of training and dedication, which they need their whole careers, not just the beginning of it. This is what separates Tyson from true greats. His potential and performance despite training deficiency was great, but his shortcomings cost him notoriety in his losses he never avenged and his legacy will forever be tarnished by those losses he may have overcome if his character and ethic wasn't so porous. Tyson is my favorite boxer, ever, but I realize his flaws. Apologies for the long post, cheers!

Dont Appologise what you just said summed it up perfectly, tucker stated that people lose to mike before they even enter the ring because they are intimidated by him. tucker said hes not having none of it and he was there to win. this fight shows how tyson struggles with taller fighters which is why although im a major fan of tyson i dont think people like lennox lewis or vitali klitchko would of struggled to a prime tyson. vitali would get the KO and i think lewis would get a points decision.

Ali would've hit Tyson at least twice as much and totally frustrated him.
Tyson's movements were so fast that it was difficult for a taller opponent to generate enough momentum to catch Mike. As they were trying to wind up a big shot Mike already landed 5 lightning fast bombs. Like with Frank Bruno he had knock out power, but Mike's forward aggressive style prevented him from generating momentum also, so all he could do was throw weak pitter-patter shots from the arm.
