This song always makes me cry. Reminds me of when my ex and I first started dating when we would sit in his car for hours and the windows would fog and we'd just listen to her "under the pink" album. We would write and draw on the windows (in the fog)and just relax. This song takes me to some of the happiest memories in my life. Never take the simplest moments for granted. I know that now.
My wife and I got to see Tori perform at the WOW Hall in Eugene, Oregon, a cool little eccentric, counter-culture venue. Little Earthquakes had just came out and she was virtually unknown yet. We sat no more than 15 feet from her and her piano. Just... wow! The mc told everyone that "one day you will be able to say that you saw Tori Amos in a small room".We had no idea of how big she would become, but maybe he did.
I remember those days. A friend from England (we had bonded over Kate Bush) sent me Little Earthquakes in 1991, and it b-l-e-w m-y m-i-n-d. I saw Tori in Montreal in October 1992 at the then Café Campus, a small venue outside University of Montreal which held about 150 people. Tori was a rather petite woman with volcanic talent, she held the room in her thrall for a set lasting over 2 hours. No warm up band, just Tori, within breathing distance of everyone in the room. Her talent is magic. I met people at that show who have remained lifelong friends. Here's to the artists, they bring depth and meaning to our lives.
I loved UTP back then and appreciate it even more now. in the 90s I was at the mall shopping and bought a nice shirt. i made my way to Harmony Music store...I was flipping thru the Tori CDs looked up and the sales girl who sold me the shirt was standing there and grabbed Under The Pink and said "Ill take this one" and went to the register. Being clueless I didn't realize she probably followed me there to flirt with me. But I wonder: did she return the CD later to get her money back? Or did she keep it and listen and did it have an impact on her? I think about stuff like that 😆
Me too! also thinks of mine like this one person mention of my ex is no longer with me there on this planet, so it makes me sad and happy but I keep dreaming about him ,and I don’t want to because I want him just to rest in peace, we love, Tori, and we got to see her not this early on where were young but I loved her then later on, in 1998! Then in 99 and then I saw Strange little girls and I wasn’t that into it but then I got more into some of the songs like rattlesnakes and the ones she’s awesome. I listen to her at least once a day and that’s crazy, but she is magical when she performs and I cry and I it’s hard not to. There is never gonna be anyone like her, and there hasn’t been since.❤️💯
Rebecca Leonard - I agree , Tori remains the finest singer songwriter I have have ever seen. A genius. Baker Baker moves me to the core. Timeless and beautifully haunting.
Under the Pink is an important album Tori created for females. Dealing with concepts of relationships not only with each other, but our relationships to men, our place in history and religion. Certain songs on UTP deal with our experiences on a basic level, with sisters, friends, boyfriends but it also delves into the deeper concepts of the exclusion of female energy in institutionalized religions & history. It's brilliant - 100+ years later will be a classic. Tori has made friends with time!
I discovered Tori with this album. 1994. I was a 19 yo strapping young man hooking up with all the girls. Heterosexual as can be! Ha! I had no idea this was for females and I didn’t really care nor pay attention to the lyrics to realize it either. I was just entranced by her sultry voice and piano skills. I fell in love with that style: sexy woman singing and playing the piano all haunting and dark. Made me want to learn to play the piano. I imagined being the piano player while a beautiful woman with a sultry voice would be sitting on it singing one of Tori’s songs if not Tori herself. I love how her haunting piano goes with the cellos and violins along with her voice staring at me while she sings. Badass!
I genuinely think this song is her greatest. After everything she's made, this is the one song that I'll always come back to. Winter is also a contender for that spot.
God. She was perfect here. Totally at her creative peak. I miss the old Tori so much. Her new material lacks the raw emotion that her first handful of releases had.
This song means so much to me, and has always been my favorite. Watching this performance has made me fall in love with the song again, and with Tori and her stage presence. I love it!!! thanks for posting
wow wow wow wow, she's so talented, I love her, this song is amazing and with violins is much better, her lyrics are so poetic. God, I'm in love of this woman.
Mmmmmmmmmmm. It's a hot summer day, I have no AC in my apartment, the cat and I are stretched out on the couch, key lime pie in the freezer, and Tori is keeping us cool. Glad for her today.
@sTapleEVA happy to read that ! I could have completely ignored Tori's talent a few years ago, I needed to listen to her songs more carefully, her lyrics are always interesting. She truely is a genius and now I'm studying her work for my academic paper this year at University. Sure, her live performances are often better thant studio versions. You should try "To Venus and Back", two discs, the second one with only live versions of her songs.
It was weird. My Mom actually taped this show on video VHS. It's almost unwatchable now due to age. Guys were screaming like crazy when the models came on and were being interviewed. But after Tori Amos performed, all the screaming was for her. When Leno thanked the models at the end, it was pretty silent. Great to see that the audience appreciated Tori Amos, a very talented song writer and singer - Substance over style.
I remember watching this when it first aired. I was already a fan, and was excited about her being on Leno because I'd never seen her perform live. My boyfriend's friend was visiting, and had never heard of her. After watching this, he said he was in love.
I will get thumbs down for this, but I'm allowed to have an opinion too... and I firmly agree. It's such a shame she succumbed to the pressure to confirm and/or the desire to remain 'relevant' to a new generation of young folks.
June fifth sitting around drunk with a broken heart . I had to hear this song . Tori has so much emotion . Just reverse the roles from girl to guy to guy to girl .
I highly regard and respect Tori Amos... for her indomitable will and persevering strength. A victim of rape - upon which she reflects by her song Me And A Gun, which appears on her debut album, Little Earthquakes - Tori Amos gives account of this heinously unforgivable deed which has befallen women - according to The Bible - since the times of Deuteronomy... But, for Tori Amos - as for all victims-turned-survivors of rape - her story does not end there. During the time between Little Earthquakes and Tori Amos's second album, Under The Pink, Tori engaged in a relationship with a man, whom she would eventually marry. Because of troubles engendered by the memories reflected upon by Me And A Gun, Tori and her beau split apart, leaving Tori to reflect upon the split and all the reasons for it - which she does by her song, Baker Baker, which appears on the latter album. But by Baker Baker, Tori not only reflects on the split in her relationship, but she also conveys her feelings to her beloved in an attempt to promote some understanding in him of her involvement in the split, offering him - and invariably any listener - insight into the soul of this courageous - and seemingly "off-the-wall" - woman... and survivor.
Thank you so much for your loving and deeply insightful commentary about this song and about Tori in general, Steven. I came to know and adore Tori in 1996 at a very difficult and heartbreaking time of my life. As much as people speak about female rape as being a truly horrendous thing, male rape is even less discussed, and that's what I endured 2 days before my 19th birthday in 1996 after getting to the tail end of a depressive-anxiety eating disorder and a huge amount of ignorance and hatred from my family. I discovered "Boys for Pele", and from my position of wounded disroder and trying to put the pieces back together, it really spoke to me - especially "Caught a LIte Sneeze" and "Blood Roses" as a harpsichord player myself. Anyway, the long and short of it is that I am deeply thankful for your beautiful post, Steven. I can never possibly thank you enough. Peace and love to you always :)
@sTapleEVA I'd say all are good ones but my favorites : Blood Roses, Winter, Precious Things, Pretty Good Year, Cloud on my Tongue, Cooling, Strange Little Girl (a cover), Jackie's Strength, Caught a Light Sneeze... well maybe I should stop there !!
I love your experience doll❤. These experiences are rare.
there's something absolutely magical about this woman.
Right
Definitely
Liking Tori Amos makes you cool. Even people who don't love her can respect a Tori fan.
30 years have passed since i first fell in love with this ... 2 years after being obsessed with ' earthquakes ' ... makes me happy... makes me sad

Precious memory

I've only been to Eugene Oregon once in my life and my best memory of it was hanging with fans and meeting Tori Amos 🙃
One of the most perfect things I've ever witnessed in my life.
i love how she's the most intelligent and beautiful person in the room, and that's including the host and the supermodels!
This is one of the albums I've most enjoyed in my life.
Tori makes me cry, even when I think I can't, I'm all dried up, she's that good.
Me too! also thinks of mine like this one person mention of my ex is no longer with me there on this planet, so it makes me sad and happy but I keep dreaming about him ,and I don’t want to because I want him just to rest in peace, we love, Tori, and we got to see her not this early on where were young but I loved her then later on, in 1998! Musicians just don't feel like this anymore
Rebecca Leonard - I agree , Tori remains the finest singer songwriter I have have ever seen. A genius. Baker Baker moves me to the core. Timeless and beautifully haunting.
i think they do, but they don't sell that well nowadays...:-/ it's always about money...
True. I can't get into the music these days for nothing. I'm always going back to when music had depth and soul.
What a lovely thing to grow up with her and her ever evolving art and music. I am so lucky in that regard!
now i want to get back to 1994!!!!
One of the best live performers ever...ethereal and inspiring.
what a voice she had...One in a billion.
Still makes me misty after all of these years.
I remember downloading this in the form of a 20MB .MOV file on a modem around 1998. It took hours.
Ahhh, the good ol' days :)
Probably my favorite song she's ever done
She's my hero. Her music is an inspiration.
00:18 - i just love the "pun intended" nod she does after the "make me whole again"

I'm so grateful to have been influenced by this back in the day.
... pearly's been good to me ...
This is amazing.
Under the pink album got me through some tough times. Love her like crazy
I genuinely think this song is her greatest. After everything she's made, this is the one song that I'll always come back to. Winter is also a contender for that spot.
It’s possible.
Crystal clear voice like water with the rhythm of the soul.
Magnificent interpretation
... a hug between wings
Reminds me of my first love. If you see him say hi... 11-26-93

Still. She STILL kills me. This song.
Amazing performance. HAd the chance to hear this life back in 2005. I LOVE HER ATTIRE!!! Beautiful.
"Baker, Baker" (1994)
God. She was perfect here. Totally at her creative peak. I miss the old Tori so much. Her new material lacks the raw emotion that her first handful of releases had.
One of the best and most emotional performances of this song I've ever seen; thanks for the upload.
simply perfect!!!!!
Takes me back to a time I loved....
beautiful performance...love her feeling and facial expressions..i remember listening to this cd when it first came out...wow

This song means so much to me, and has always been my favorite. Watching this performance has made me fall in love with the song again, and with Tori and her stage presence. I love it!!! thanks for posting
Her voice suits her beauty so perfectly... this is probably her best performance EVER.
The Joker meets Karen Carpenter. I don't know whether to love or fear this astounding talent.
She is BEAUTIFUL.

I keep coming back to this. Absolutely mesmerizing
Perfection!!
une voix démentielle.

The incredible tori amos
Hi tori, great show in Evanston ill, never forget when we shook hands
Mmmmmmmmmmm. It's a hot summer day, I have no AC in my apartment, the cat and I are stretched out on the couch, key lime pie in the freezer, and Tori is keeping us cool. Glad for her today.

Enchanting woman indeed
This was amazing! I love you Tori!
So much emotion.
so lovely :)
I just love her!!
May be irrelevant but she blows those "supermodels" out of the water, in every way.
It was weird. My Mom actually taped this show on video VHS. It's almost unwatchable now due to age. Guys were screaming like crazy when the models came on and were being interviewed. Ponette when it comes to it people want their souls touched, not their eyes
one of my favourite tori songs!
i added my own cover of "baker baker" in the video responses :D
Timeless...
Fan since 93
I love you - you inspire me. Thanks xx
Perfect!
so beautiful.
tori for president!!!!! yay!
I do believe she's wearing a kind of green dress on the album cover with the fishnet over it. Correct? I love it!
Tori in her prime! What happened to 1994?? Can't believe it was so long ago.. I feel old. :-(
But, I'm still a Toriphile. Some things won't change.
I remember watching this when it first aired. I was already a fan, and was excited about her being on Leno because I'd never seen her perform live. My boyfriend's friend was visiting, and had never heard of her. After watching this, he said he was in love.
and the pain runs through us !
Her best song with "winter".
Superbe Tori
She used to be, too bad what she did to her face, it's numb now. It lost its magical expression.
Love it!
...wow.
crying.
wow,
even better than the CD
simply because it is live.
U just said exactly how I feel!! Go ears with feet!
WOW!
