  • Now I can keep working on my fence. Glad to have that pile of boulders and branches out of the way.

Hey there! I'm Travis Jantzer, and if you're into landscaping ideas, DIY projects, and the challenges and rewards of homesteading, then you've come to the right place. My wife and I have been married for over 5 years, and we're blessed with three beautiful daughters. We're all about road trips, bouldering, and ultimate frisbee. Plus, we've weathered some life-changing events like rebuilding after a wildfire that destroyed the family business I run with my dad.

Speaking of Battling the deer, there's another channel I watch, Living Traditions Homestead, from up in Missouri who found a Very successful way to do exactly that. If you want to see what they did, go to their channel and look for videos about their Chicken moat. (I didn't spell that wrong, lol) They built a "chicken moat" around their orchard and garden to protect them from the deer. It's basically a double row of fence, 6 feet between the rows, that wraps completely around their orchard and garden. Deer have no depth perception so when they see a double layer of fence they can't tell if they can jump it successfully, so they don't try. And because they didn't want to waste the land between fences, they use it as a "moat" for their chickens and ducks. Two layers of fence like that would be expensive, but it got me to thinking... How could a person who already had a fence make that fence look like a double fence without building a second fence? Hmmmmm... I think your garden area is gonna be Gorgeous this year. I hope it produces more food than you can eat!

That’s an interesting thought! My chicken run is already along the property for that reason but only about 70 feet of it. I’m probably gonna experiment a little to make it all effective. We shall see.

Could the big tree root be used in some part of the garden? Maybe part of a water feature or to grow alpines on?

Possibly! right now its just in the chicken run. I'm hoping it attracts some grub for the chickens maybe.
