On this part. Apparently when they were recording this album they were having difficulties wrapping up this track so the band decided to take a brake amd grab a pint at a local pub. When they got back to the studio they recorded the version you hear on the record in a single take and, right after Thom sang the final lines, he immediately burs I into tears.
@@desrever1138 To add a bit more of context, I'm letting this here: Jeff Buckley gave me confidence to sing in falsetto. -Thom Yorke When we were recording ‘Fake Plastic Trees’, we went to see Jeff Buckley play at The Garage. He just had a Telecaster and a pint of Guinness and it was just fucking amazing. Then we went back to the studio and tried an acoustic version of ‘Fake Plastic Trees’. Thom sat down and played it in three takes, then burst into tears afterwards. And that’s what we used for the record.
There was a time I really admired Hollywood and celebrities now I look at them like Thom Yorke does a bunch of fake plastic trees living in a fake world for us to admire. Thom Yorke is brilliant.
It's about the“fake” world we live in, and the phoney, shallow people around us who are all pretending to be something they are not, in order to conform to societies ruled & expectations. And how we all give in to someone else’s idea of who we should be in order to keep the peace in our relationships; and all of this pressure eventually weighs too heavily on us.
"She feels like the real thing, she tastes like the real thing, my fake plastic love" That hits hard, loving someone and knowing she doesn't love you back the same way you do.
I love this song so much! The entire "The Bends" album is a masterpiece - especially "Street spirit (fade out)". Or "Just" - those videos are amazing too.
When Thom hits those high notes… “Fake plaaAAAstic earth” That’s called falsetto, which is the register of the voice above our “normal” speaking and singing voices. I think it’s also called head voice. What I read is that Thom was inspired to use more of that after the band had seen singer Jeff Buckley live, who tended to use a lot of falsetto in his singing. Thom does it well.
I'd call it a reinforced falsetto, because it's not breathy but that's for my own sake of clarity, these terms can be interchangeable depending on who you ask. Jeff Buckley was a hell of a good singer.
The Bends (the title track), No Surprises, Paranoid Android, Karma Police, Street Spirit (Fade Out), Exit Music For a Film ... any of those are WELL WORTH a go.
Your reactions are always the best. Some 'reactors' just sit there, almost catatonic, not really reacting at all. Some ham it up, exaggerate, or even fake their reactions. Yours by contrast are genuine, insightful and delightful. Thank you.
Great reaction. Their tune 'Let Down' is another great song. Enjoy this band, they are unique and Thom does have a very unique takes you into the music and allows you to feel the music. Cheers!
i love let down, the lyrics, the way the guitar is almost crying, and his VOICE. “one day i am gonna grow wings, a chemical reaction, hysterical and useless” is one of my favourite lyrics of all time
In 1995, everybody expected Radiohead to deliver a 'Creep Pt. 2' on their 2nd album 'The Bends'... Clearly, this was not what they expected 😂 As a result, the album did not sell as much as their debut album 'Pablo honey' in 1993... Little did Radiohead know that 2 years later, their career and popularity would go into overdrive in 1997/ '98 after the release of their 3rd album 'OK Computer'... "High and dry" was another single from this album.
RH - thanks for being one of the bands which formed the soundtrack of my youth. It will forever evokes so many powerful emotions, some amazing and some heartbreaking. This song is humble and radiates around my soul.
@@shinybeast8946Wow you consider loving a band as being “insufferable”? Maybe you should take a look at yourself in the mirror. As much of a radiohead fan I am they are still not my favorite, I definetly like pink floyd more but I don’t go around roasting people for their preferences. I am sorry to break it down to you but you are the one being insufferable
Great song off an amazing album. Highly recommend listening to it from start to finish. You've reacted to songs off their first and second album so I guess a song off of the third album, '' OK, Computer" would make sense. Awesome reaction!
Pulp's "Common People" and Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" videos -- both released in 1995 -- both feature the lead singer inside a shopping cart moving through a supermarket. Coldplay is often cited as a band heavily influenced by Radiohead's "The Bends" album.
Radiohead has so so many gorgeous songs - they are modern legends. I recommend "Exit Music for a Film"...it is the story of Romeo and Juliet so a sad narrative but his voice and acoustic guitar are front and center (though they range far and wide as a band to many other styles.) Definitely a band that has the power to become a lifelong favorite. Thanks for the video! You did a great interpretation as the song played.
It’s about things that are fake.. 1st verse is about a woman who goes overboard with decorations to her house, to keep up with her neighbors.. 2nd verse is about a plastic surgeon who no longer sees the point to his life.. And 3rd verse is about a fake partner.. And the troubles that brings..
It’s funny that your initial reaction to the line about her living with the “polystyrene man” was “he’s a bad man”. It’s perfect really, since that polystyrene man is the victim of the story (song). He tries to make things perfect (surgery) but “gravity always wins”. It wears him out (pushed around in a trolley). And for her, it wears her out (fake plastic tree). But the great thing about TYs songs are that they are open to interpretation.
I remember buying this album around 1995. Played it non-stop! Radiohead were a great place to go when you needed something a bit less poppy than Brit Pop.
The first song I ever learned on guitar, will always have a special place in my heart. When Thom belts out 'But I can't help the feeeeliiing' I get a lump in my throat.
I absolutely love your reaction videos. It always seems that you really listen to the lyrics and try and find the essence of what the song is trying to say. You also come across as a really kind and genuine person. Keep up the great work. 😁
Radiohead are one of the top handful of bands of the 90s. Their catalogue is deep and varied and gorgeous. A favorite of mine is the live Cochella performance of Planet Telex, which gives me the chills every time I see it. Thom sort of channels Smeagol a couple times in that performance 🙂 And of course "Karma Police", "Fade Out", "No Surprises", "High and Dry", and so many more songs that are just worlds unto themselves. And they also have much more adventurous, experimental stuff as well. Across the pond, Smashing Pumpkins are sort of the other best of the 90s band, for me.
If you really want to appreciate Radiohead, you probably should do a complete album reaction of Kid A or Ok Computer. But if you only do single songs, I can definitely recommend How to Disappear Completely or Nude.
Awww baby Radiohead ♥️ The two you've done, Creep is ok. Overplayed here in the states. This one, much better imo. There's a couple other truly great tracks from this album as well, Fade Out (Street Spirit) probably my favorite. But you have not even begun this journey. Once they hit their next album, they transformed into something unlike any other modern band I've heard. I definitely look forward to seeing you dive in. There's not much middle ground with these guys, most people love them or fucking hate them. You're in for a wild ride!

Hi Bisscute, I heard you say that you love his voice and also the acoustic guitar. Therefore I suggest one of my favorite songs from them titled I PROMISE accompanied by a beautiful official video. I promise you will love it.
They aren’t talking bout relationships. This is about how we buy things we don’t need, fake things that we think are necessary. Fake plastic trees, for example
You get two kinds of alienation in capitalism. The most obvious one is people being forced to do work they hate for too little money and too long hours, and struggling to pay their bills and drowning in debt. The other one is people with enough income to live well but seeing the emptiness and fakeness of everything they consume, and getting less and less satisfaction or joy from the things they buy, and being depressed about not being as happy/successful/thin/sexy as the people on TV and in movies. Not being able to fit in with the impossible standards of advertising. Back in the 1990s maybe more of us in the west could be feeling that second kind of alienation. Those days are over. Now everyone is falling into the first kind, but also with the knowledge that all those "rich people things" are crap. I think Thom Yorke was expressing that "first world problems" kind of alienation.

He seems to always be ahead of time
please react to radiohead's how to disappear completely theme it's a masterpiece
Celebrities, “Hollywood”, politicians, religious leaders, etc… are the same as everything else. There are good people and scumbags in every group.
Hollywood's always been like that.
It's about the“fake” world we live in, and the phoney, shallow people around us who are all pretending to be something they are not, in order to conform to societies ruled & expectations. Yea, that's pretty much how I see it as well.
Spot on!
Bingo. We're so surrounded by fake plastic culture that we risk losing the ability to tell what's real anymore.
Nicely put. And sadly true.
radiohead did with their first album pretended to be something they are not but after pablo honey they proof something that was world class music
"She feels like the real thing, she tastes like the real thing, my fake plastic love" That hits hard, loving someone and knowing she doesn't love you back the same way you do.
"if i could be who you wanted, all the time"

So many great songs on that album. “My Iron Lung” “Black Star” “Nice Dream” etc.

Thom has a beautiful falsetto. He said that he didn't like his voice because it (voice) sounds so sweet.
