It was cold weather this week and we had to go in the gym and now I don't dare let the kids do anything that gets them too winded. I am afraid of someone fainting on my watch with less oxygen. We also just had two kids test positive for COVID-19 that have been in PE, so things are getting real.

    I was never athletic. Once when we were running laps around the gym I wasn't moving fast enough for the kid behind me so he gave me a shove and I went headfirst into the hardwood floor. I wound up in the hospital. Kids should not be forced to take PE because for some kids it does more harm than good.

    • @ThePESpecialist
      @ThePESpecialist  3 года назад

      Man, sorry that happened to you. That's not an issue with PE though, that's an issue with the behavior management of the other students in your class.
      You only get one body, learning how to take care of it is a pretty important part of life - that's what PE should be about.
      That sounds like a horrible experience though, I can understand why you'd feel that way after going through something like that

    Hey there Ben! I am a 19 year old college student majoring in kinesiology in southern California and preparing to transfer from a community college to a university but I do not know yet what my focus will be on, whether its Physical education, applied health, or exercise science, those are the focuses my transfer school offers. While I still am leaning toward becoming a PE teacher, I am not sure how I would coincide with the kids and the work in general. What would I need to do to an internship or get some sort of hands on experience? Also I have been thinking of taking a gap year from college to truly find out if I want to do PE for the rest of my life, if I were to, do you recommend any goals or certifications for me during that year? Also, what does it take to coach high school sports? Credentials? Networking? Experience as a player? Internships? I apply for transfer for my university in 2 months but I feel as if I need more time, what should I do? Thanks

    • @ThePESpecialist
      @ThePESpecialist  5 лет назад +1

      Usually you don't need credentials to coach at least in my district. As far as experience I would seek out some quality teachers that are near you and go observe them, offer to help out and explain your situation - most people would love some extra help and it would give you a chance to see a few different programs.
      Also, substitute teaching is a great way to get a feel for it - it's super hard to find a good sub, so shoot an email to the PE teachers you would want to sub for during your gap year and you'll get booked up pretty quickly.
      You're 19, you've got a ton of time - I think your smart to test things out before you go all in - hope it goes well

    I’m an advertising major in college (and a sophomore so kinda too late to switch majors and graduate in 4 years). I do however want to become a gym teacher. I especially want to set myself in an atmosphere making kids happy. What do you think I should do? Also this may be a dumb question but do I have to know how to play all sports?

    • @ThePESpecialist
      @ThePESpecialist  3 года назад

      Nice man! Marketing is a great skill set and can he really useful in teaching too - we all market ourselves and our classes every day in one way or another.
      I would either switch majors and graduate in 5 years if you're sure about it - or finish up and get a masters in PE - or finish up and look into alternative certification methods in your state.
      Also, try to get some substitute teaching jobs to get a feel for it and make sure it's what you want to do.
      You definitely don't need to know how to play all sports, but you can always learn along with the kids while you're teaching them

    • @vaishx

      @@ThePESpecialist Thank you! Also would a masters degree in athletic administration and sports management help? What are some examples of an alternative certification?

    • @ThePESpecialist

      @@vaishx You just have to call the state department of education or district where you want to work to find out if they offer alternative means of certification or not and what the details are - it varies state by state.
      Athletic Admin might help if that's something you want to get into aside from teaching - sports management probably not - if you want to be a teacher I would just try to get in front of kids as much as possible an education degree is more helpful than athletic admin for teaching purposes

    I have 26 years of teaching experience in elementary PE in the state of Texas. My class sizes average around 45 students per class and on Fridays, I have every single student. My classes last 50 mins and each student gets PE three times a week. My biggest challenge is finding new activities on Fridays to keep kids moving in a small gym. I use DrumFit, yoga, dance, walk-a-ton challenges, stability ball workouts, relay races, tae bo, and cupstacking. Fridays I have four sections at once and this past year, that meant 92 5th graders. If you have any activities you use with large groups, please post them on youtube, if you don't mind. Thanks.

    • @ThePESpecialist
      @ThePESpecialist  4 года назад +6

      I think that depends on a lot of variables. If you're single and stay out of debt, then yea sure, no problem. If you're married and have 2 incomes, then also no problem.
      For me as the Father of 3 and the sole breadwinner for my family it wouldn't be possible to live on the teacher salary alone (or at least I wouldn't be willing to do what it takes to cut my lifestyle like that) Which is why I've always had a side hustle going - most teachers do.
      Ultimately, I think the most important thing is finding something that you love to do - there are tons of teachers out there in the world making it work - sure you're not going to get rich and I wish teachers made more money, but if you love it then find a way to make it work.
      On the flip side, I know single guys teaching PE and taking the entire summer to travel around, backpack, live in a van, hostel jump from town to town - so it just depends on the lifestyle you want to live and the ability to live within your means.

    Can I become a physical education teacher with a nutrition and dietetics bachelors or masters degree? An educational studies degree?

    • @ThePESpecialist
      @ThePESpecialist  2 года назад

      You'll have to look up the certification requirements in the state / district you want to work - I would assume you'll at the least be required to pass the certification test for the state and go through an alternative certification course if you don't have a Phys Ed Degree - but it depends on the state (also private schools have different rules too, usually more. leniant)

    For some kids PE is great but for other kids it is a hardship. I was never athletic. In high school I had to run a mile in PE. My body gave out and I collapsed after about quarter of a mile. To force all kids to take PE does a lot of damage to some kids. Kids should be allowed to opt out of PE.

    Good day sir, is it necessary to have sports coaching skills in order to be a middle school PE teacher?

    • @ThePESpecialist
      @ThePESpecialist  2 года назад +2

      It depends on the school you plan to work at, but most PE coaches at the secondary level are expected to coach - it would be something to discuss with your admin when interviewing. That's one reason I chose elementary - I wanted to focus on teaching and not be forced to coach
