  • My black belt test, taken in Montreal, May 2010. While preparing for it, I got a lot out of watching tests that others had put up, so here is mine. I hope it might help you too.
    The randori portion is in the next video in the playlist.
    All ad revenue is going back to my dojo co-op.

    Thanks! Yeah, haters are gonna hate, but it seems like people are getting what they need out of it, so I'm glad I put it up.
    Were you at the seminar last weekend?

    Thanks for sharing your test longinthetooth it is a shame that the aikido world has so many know it alls who can't help but critizise others - makes me sad. BUT your test and you spirit made me happy! Plus Claude Sensei was also looking happy so that speaks volumes for your test. Well done! To pass a shodan test in front of 3 such formidable shihans is something to be very proud of :-)

    I had tested in February of 2010 for my shodan in aikido. Now working on nidan. But I loved watching your test. I'm amazed at the endurance of your uke. In my school, my sensei changes out uke every so often so I am blessed with a fresh uke. I got all the energy I could handle and more. I'm assuming you passed? I would have no problem in seeing you as a shodan. Excellent work.

    Very nice for the main part of the test. Good pace, good stance. The randori - hard to do in a long narrow space, but a tip for next time - use your uke like a bowling ball against the others, and know where you are throwing them. Throw each into the path of the one you just threw and don't wait for them to come to you. Otherwise, a very good test!

    @hallobaaaby, At 1:20, no, it's not a proper sankyo pin. It's yonkyo.
    Do you have a video of your own shodan test, that I might learn from?

    At the end of all my tests my Sensei comes out and makes me Uke for him till I'm about to puke, then the test ends. Did you Uke at all for your test? It seems strange to not exhibit your abilities as an Uke who flows well. A huge part of Aikido is learning how to fall and flow.

    i can't stand all these guys who say aikido is "fake". i let it get the better of me. i need to learn how to see the best in all situations. fighting can be a lot of fun but it's just not me. i'm too much of a cutie

    oh, i must excuse myself for a mistake taken: this must be an aikikai, i.e. what they teach ladies in the ballet

    0:20 the sloser dude: when you stand up DON't press onto your hip for support like an old man--betrays extremely weak shize--very bad impression that spoils otherwise not so bad general technique. 1:20 this is not propper sankio immobilisation. Also-when you are attacked with shomen,do a mirror shomen while stepping in--don't just "grab" uke's hand--always think of arming and cutting with boken/katana--like this your hands will be ready for ikkio just before the cut of your mirror shomen.
