Hey, I've just discovered you whilst on a journey into rediscovering my love for writing. Really enjoying your videos, you are so honest, funny and sweet. I have had my own issues with mental health and imposter syndrome (as I'm sure most people have) and it's so encouraging and reassuring people just talking about it out here on RUclips and being real with it. Also, I have no idea what you're talking about, your handwriting is beautiful?!
I wish I could meet you (and Duke) in real life!

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  5 лет назад +7

Imposter Syndrome is such a struggle, I feel you. And I know it wraps into the fear of failure (and success) that I also struggle with. (And I'm sure a lot of creative types do!) I've really appreciated the videos I've seen where creators were open about struggling, so I figured it was my turn to share too. And it makes me feel a lot better to know I'm not the only one, when I get comments like this! :) Were all sort of struggling together but that means we can all help each other too.
AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT bahaha. My handwriting is so hard to read 95% of the time. 😂 And aww thank you! I'm not with Duke right now, but I'm sure he'd say hi too!

I got the basis of my editing process from HeartBreathings and I got a lot of my "Outline" stuff from Kim Chance and Jenna Mereci. I get so much from watching AuthorTube. I found out what a writing sprint was from your channel and now I write in sprints. It helps me focus.
I've been planning my own channel. One episode would be "How To: Screenwriting." I've been writing screenplays for about 13 years. None of them have gone anywhere, but I did enjoy writing them.

  • @Kevlandia

Okay a lot of things to say here haha. First off, I love everything Tamara had to say. Mental health is such an important thing that I think a lot of creatives tend to ignore to try and squeeze out as much creativity as possible. If that makes sense lol. But I loved that you tried to do my pseudo-routine! The water thing can really suck with all the peeing BUT IT'S GREAT FOR YOU! lol ALSO! Thank you for saying such nice things about the Queens. I love using playlists! I generally use Dungeon's and Dragon playlists on Spotify for when I write fantasy. Which is great since they always have scene-specific playlist themes. When I'm writing other genres though, I generally use 425hz on RUclips. Just kinda centers my brain. Also, I would love a video breaking down how you set up the revising timeline thing. Like, what do you look for when reading through your draft, etc.. I do something similar but am always looking for way to up it :)

Loved this! I find it interesting how you say you struggle to name things, since I have the opposite issue. In the past two months, I've come up with 61 new short story titles. I mainly struggle with coming up with plot ideas for them. I have 13 WIP short stories, plus a novel re-write I'm working on. I'm super excited to work on a lot of them, and I want to write in them all at once LOL! A lot of the newest titles I've come up with are some of my favorites.
And to answer your first question: the way I take care of my mental health is, honestly, by writing. I've found that writing keeps the bad thoughts and feelings away, and puts me in an overall pretty positive mood. Before I started taking writing seriously...I was severely depressed, very suicidal and hated myself so much. I had been that way since I was 11 after a relative I was very close to passed away. When I was 19, I got this idea to write stories about this imaginary world I had created, since one of my favorite Tumblr bloggers did that, too. So I did - and I really enjoyed it! I don't write those stories anymore (and my mental health has greatly improved since), but I appreciate the help they gave me.
I mainly write literary fiction stories nowadays, with some romantic comedies on the side. I'm been trying to get published since Feb. 2017, with no luck yet, but with a story (one I consider my best) that I've simultaneously submitted to a few lit mags, this one could be the One, so wish me luck! Hope you're doing well! I seriously love watching your videos! Keep up the great work, and keep being awesome! :D

So I have added something to my repertoire from your method. My current book is "Project Orange".
Now, while writing, I can't have anything with words playing, because it gives me word interference in my head.
Tamara and Carrow just set up a google docs schedule for live streams. Only 3 blocks are filled in as of typing this. The two of them, and Alec Williams. It would be cool if that could get filled by everyone who does write-ins.

Sometimes when I don't feel like drawing my characters (much rather be writing about them) I like to build them in the Sims and then take screenshots. I find it can be helpful and probably especially so for those who are not artistically inclined. I think the whole "create-a-sim" part of the game is part of the free demo as well!

Oh I agree with you; I honestly think that picking apart the writing of others is the most effective way to learn how to write. When you figure out what works and what doesn't in OTHER stories, that's how you learn how to write your own well. That's why I inhale movie and book reviews/critiques, as well as trying to be objective about the content I myself consume.

Kate, you know, it's been a great idea doing these trying to write like... vids, but something tells me it's time to take the next step, take the best of what you've learnt on this journey, and do an updated vid about your own writing routine where you show how you've incorporated these lessons into your routine as a result (or how you've decided not to in some cases). My guess is after doing a number of these the effect of trying to write like others gets exhausting because they aren't yours, so doing your own revised one would be a good reward.

Hi! I am new to your channel and I am loving it. I binged watched a load of your videos last night and if you don't mind my asking, I have a personal equation so feel free to not answer it. How are you able to not work and write all day? You mention in this video that the RUclips you are emulating has a full time job as do I. I had a weird dream whilst in my second year that congealed into a pool of amazing ideas and I built a world around it and an over arching story that would need to take about five books as it grew that large. I have around 700 pages of planning from world building to social groups, characters, religious beliefs and figures as well as locales and creatures. My idea and notes came to a head 2 years ago and since then I began writing the first book but because of my job, gym and other commitments I have only written 75 pages in around 2 years. If I can be so bold what sources of income do you have that let you write full time or is it the success of your youtube channel that generates revenue enough for you pursue this full time?

Glad you were able to recognize things weren't going well and pull out of it - that's a challenge all its own! RIIIIGHT. It's so good. That album isn't my favorite Panic album, I dont think, but it's really close!

I mean it’s hard to pick, they’re all really good!! But that particular song has a special place in my heart.

I actually read one of Francina Simone's books "The Keeper's Vow" I really liked it. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is the longest review I wrote on Goodreads. In case anyone is interested I put the link below, but honestly, don't read it unless you've read the book since it has spoilers: www.goodreads.com/review/show/1757733470?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1

I would love to beta read for you if you have any open slots? 😊
The beta reading process for myself has been very chaotic and sad. I've met some pretty bad beta readers who just wanted to read, but not give any feedback or next to useless feedback. They did not stick to any time frames, which I let them decide on to accomodate their lives and when I finally took the courage to confront them to end their beta reading they got mad at me for not wanting them to continue reading after they messed up :(
In between these bad eggs I've had good ones too, that each have their own strenghts, but the bad experiences have really put me off asking new people to beta read my fantasy book. Sadly, I have no critique partner and have no luck finding a good match.
I usually send out one chapter at a time, how do you do it, Kate?

The water thing is because your brain uses a lot of water to function properly. Even as little as 2% dehydration can have negative impacts on brain function, which as a writer would be hard to work with. Water also helps your memory, emotions, and mood :)

RIGHT. It's crazy! Editing it back was also confusing too, since I did it in chunks, and originally it WAS jlw and then the second and third edits, you weren't hahaha
