Lemmy from Motörhead saw a documentary about the 1st World War and it inspired him to write, among other things, the song 1916 which is now covered by Sabaton. The music video was shot in 3 different locations in England. All the people who join the march are people who are fans of metal music and they advertised for people and they came, they didn't know about anything but they had just written that it is worth meeting. You have all the different soldiers and flags from different countries. Because as they sing, that's what it's like to be a soldier. The Swedish flag is included and the drummer and lead guitarist are wearing Swedish uniforms, because Sweden was involved in the 30-year war.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin Год назад +1

Also: The Mötorhead album 1916 had flags of the warring nations in the cover, and the Motörhead flag seen is close to that cover.
So the flags were a salute to Mötorhead on several levels.

Hello from Iowa USA. Thank you for another great reaction. I really enjoy the direction you take in analyzing the actual video since most reactors ignore it or don't have the skill set to appreciate it. Don't be afraid to go into more detail on the shots and setups, and please ignore the fanatics who don't understand what you are trying to do. I think you would enjoy the videos produced by Saltatio Mortis, a German medieval metal band. "My Mother Told Me" and "Pray to the Hunter" both are very involved in costuming and production, and each has additional videos showing the behind the scenes making of the music videos.
Just to fill in the blanks, Lemmy Kilmister discusses the song "1916" in his autobiography "White Line Fever." He wrote the song after watching a TV documentary on the 1916 Battle of the Somme during which a veteran of the battle broke down describing holding his best friend in his arms as he died, which affected Lemmy deeply. I believe the quote from Lemmy in the video is from the book.
Looking forward to more insights and analysis from you. Stay safe and stay well.

Birmingham I believe was chosen as one of the streets to march down in the video in dedication to the over 230 men from Birmingham who died on the first day of the Somme. Most of the historical figures shown in the video were from other songs Sabaton had done. When they get off the bus they were arriving on the street sometime in the 1980s. So you have multiple time periods being represented in this video not just from the soldiers but the people on the streets.

Motörhead weren't from Birmingham, but Black Sabbath and Judas Priest were. [I hope you'll forgive a mainly pasted comment, it took me a while to write the first time.] I saw Sabaton perform this live in Leeds on the first night of the current tour, and it was so emotional. So let's raise a few glasses: to Birmingham, birthplace of metal; to Lemmy (RIP); to Sabaton; and to those who sacrificed so much. My wife's grandfather was one of those who lied about his age - he was only _14_ when he went to the Front! He got out alive, thanks to some amazing luck: he was wounded and taken to a field hospital, and his own father was there at the same time. He swore a lot when he saw his son, then wrote to his wife back home explaining the situation. She in turn sent evidence of their boy's age to the War Office and they pulled him out. After he came home he never spoke to anyone in the family about his experiences. Greetings from South Yorkshire - Lest We Forget.

I do have a problem with Sabaton
and it is the themes they sing about
there is a very fine line between
    singing about historical events
    and singing glorifying war
So I spend so much time listening to the lyrics
    checking for potential glorification
and when they sing about Swedish kings
there tends to be a blind spot to their faults
Having learnt a lot of Nordic history when
I worked in Estonia and Finland
and they definitely see some of the the events
and Swedish kings (and Danish ones too) differently.
The 1916 song by Lemmy and on their 1916 album
is an anomaly in their output and stands out for that.
I would be interested in your take on the construction of the video
I presume they use war film footage mixed with their stuff
in some muddy field in presumably the UK rather than Flanders.
As a child I grew up with war memorials in Yorkshire
with hundreds of names - more in WW1 than WW2 often
    My school had a memorial
    Every town has a memorial
And the Sunday nearest 11 November is Remembrance Sunday
when services are held at these memorials
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them."
    written in 1914
