While I prefer Yes to the other bands mentioned, and though Yes is my FAVORITE band of all time, that preference is still subjective, and your statement is somewhat disrespectful to folks who prefer Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to Yes, which is perfectly fine if they do. It just kinda puts us fans of Yes in a bad light when we use blanket statements like that. If someone wants to argue that Blink 182 is the greatest band ever, I’ll have that discussion, but Zeppelin and Floyd are very deserving of their fandom.
Early Yes goes unchallenged in performing and song writing skills. Each member of the band is tops at their instruments. And the songs are not complex merely for the sake of complexity, that complexity moves the song from section to section with great dynamic shift and power. Nothing compares to Yes
Virtuoso musicians in every iterations of this band - "Yours is no disgrace" is otherworldly, "Turn of the Century" is gorgeous, "And You and I" from this same album just spiritual. No wonder "Yes" is being re-discovered by a new generation of music lovers, they have been a favourite of mine for over 50 years.
2022 was the 50th anniversary of Edge. Still the best after 50+ years. It is hard to describe what it was like as a kid having to listen to AM radio pop/rock music in the early 70's, then discovering YES when FM radio became a thing. It was an amazing time to be a kid. The times inspired optimism about the future which I certainly have trouble feeling currently.

During their Uber-Classic Period (1970-1972) YES had the best-ever "rhythm section" (if you can call it that, lol!) in Progressive Rock. Bass Player Chris Squire absolutely dominated their sound & jazz-fusion drummer was the _perfect compliment_ with his always experimental style. Bill Bruford was my #1 favorite drummer when he performed with Squire in YES. Once he left the band, I couldn't muster up the same enthusiasm for his contributions to other bands. They just weren't 'special' anymore. He just sounded like one of a million other talented jazz-fusion drummers. Oh well, it was good while it lasted!
@@nancymjohnson I never liked Alan White as much as Bruford. But I've got to hand it to him for taking over from Bruford on such short notice. The Alan White quote I love: "There are a lot of notes in a Yes concert, and you need to play every one."

EARLY 72 First saw them during this tour. Can't tell you how impactful this album was on the Adventurous Music fanbase. Minds were blown especially in a time when ACID was flowing! Anyway SK is YES at there MOST FUNKIEST and DYNAMIC. They were just NAILING MASTERPIECES BACK to BACK. no one understood HOW it was possible. This song is FIRE with a FLAMING TAIL!!!! RELENTLESS!!!! OH BTW No matter what anyone says "KHATRU" has NO MEANING! The singer once responded "AS YOU WISH" when asked it's meaning. Now many spread tall tales of that being a Yemenite word! JON ANDERSON was being funny when responding to the question > "It can be "AS YOU WISH" or whatever you want to mean! < So that's just a RUMOR by those who think they have the scoop of a lifetime! YES were the MOST POSITIVE and UPLIFTING. HENCE YES!!!!! "AND YOU AND I" is sheer BLISS written in HEAVEN for the GOD of LOVE!!! CLOSE TO THE EDGE was the PINNACLE of MUSIC and still reigns supreme, only rivaled by YES themselves with epics from their next 3 albums!

So, when I first found Yes and ELP and other ProgRock bands back in '79, I didn't have the word ProgRock. I always thought of it as "Symphonic Rock." I just about did a spit take when you commented how retro it was. This was cutting edge back then.
Play this song on a nice 4 speaker 1000W system with some EQ, and Really experience what Chris Squire is doing here, along with everyone else. Production Quality was so important for all of the Big British Bands back then, and they had only bare minimum recording equipment by todays standards, which meant Masterpieces were pain staking efforts.
I can't even imagine the time and effort that went into endeavors such as these back then. Recording has come soooo far since then. Analog was such a bitch (I presume) compared to the digital equipment we have now. But, there was something special about these recordings... maybe its just nostalgia but that wouldnt count for me since i just discovered it. but i still feel like ive heard this song a million times. crazy.
@@L33Reacts You should hear this song from The YESSONGS Album, it's a live event recording, so the sound is not studio perfect, but, the guitar solo improv at the end is insane, just like the ending of "Starship Trooper" from the same album. I've been playing guitar for 45 years, so I'm partial to Steve Howe.😁 My #1 Band
No trillion notes per bar for trillion notes’ sake like the vast majority of Prog-ish pieces today. A superbly played song with masterful arrangements and a genuine care for the melody and not a single ‘Have you heard what I’m capable of?’ attitude.
This is what Yes was doing while Genesis was doing Suppers Ready and Watcher of the Skies. I was too young to be aware of them at the time but learned about them in high school.
This is my favorite YES song. It took me a while to learn how to enjoy the beginning. It is unlike anything I had heard before and I did not understand what was going on. But eventually the opening began to make more and more sense to me. I am not in any way a musician, so take my interpretation with a grain of salt. To me, during the start of the song they are each a bit off on their own, playing their own thing, but it is constantly drifting, and shifting, and converging towards the common theme that is the rest of the song. That's what it feels like to me.
This is one of very few albums I enjoy from beginning to end. Led Zep 4 is another, as is For Your Pleasure by Roxy Music and Metamatic by John Foxx...
Your instant appreciation of this rather unusual music impresses me. I’m sure I was more doubtful about it, when I first encountered it back in the early 1970s.
@@L33Reacts The music I was accustomed to hearing at that time was a good deal simpler, songs had a tune, lyrics were comprehensible… The Beatles had only recently split up, and the post-Beatles world was trying to sort itself out, while being unsure what would become of the disunited Beatles. Music went wildly off in many different directions.
This is their last album with original Yes drummer Bill Bruford - except the 1991 "Union" album which combined the Yes lineup of that time with Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe (ABWH)
Styx, Rush, and Kansas were always my go-to bands when I was deep in prog rock, but Yes was a great alternative. "Starship Trooper is still my favorite Yes song, one I go back and listen to a lot more than the other prog I used to listen to all the time. great reaction, keep rocking.
Check out Bruford's drumming on "Discipline" by King Crimson from the 'Discipline' album. Phenomonal song, with truly fiendish drumming that is so good, you don't notice it. It just fits. Be good to the kids, and they will be good to you. (Wait until they reach their adult years too and enjoy. [We have three.])
Another masterpiece that they used to open concerts with. After this I’ll watch Close to the Edge again. I usually listen to that a few times a week. But you MUST do Gates of Delirium, based on the novel War & Peace. So that’s what you get over 22 mins. I’ll check your your Genesis and others later. Supper’s Ready is up there as an all-time best song ever ❤
And You And I, before CTTE. And you won't be ready for CTTE, there is no such thing. And more Fragile first, the album before this that led with Roundabout. The Yes Album before that is good too. In order is the best way to go through Yes
Thanks for opeming up like that, I'm in my 60s but like to stay current in music. It is hard to find positivr music in Rock nowadays, but it's there if you dig. Try the song "Sunday" by the band Foals or "In Its Infancy (The Waterfall) by the band My Morning Jacket. Too much of today's metal and emo bands are too one dimentional, I call it Complaint Rock.😊
As a drummer, I found it interesting that you Saif the folks were nice, beat held, etc. BUT, count out the song, I think you’ll find it way more interesting when you realize the song is in an off time signature throughout but feels like it’s a 4/4 rocker.

Honestly not a bad start at all, listening to Yes and Zepp.
The main riff in the intro and outro is alternating bars of 8 and 7. So seamless!
Again, I would recommend Heart of the Sunrise next.

Another awesome prog band are Gentle Giant. especially an album called Freehand. 1975. Title track and a track called On Reflection

You should check out some of the Rick Wakeman Albums. He is an awesome Keyboardist for Yes as well as one his own.
