The importance of Devil Kazuya explained | Tekken Lore

  • In this episode we take a look at the prevailing antagonistic force within the Tekken series - Devil, Devil Kazuya and the Devil Gene - as far back as Tekken 1 and brought to the fore in Tekken 2, Kazuya Mishima and his deal with the Devil has been the backbone of the Mishima arc through almost every major instalment excusing Tekken 3. His decline as a protagonist into overt villainy and the moral battle for his soul by Jun Kazama and Angel in Tekken 2 have made Kazuya one of the most interesting anti-heroes in video games, and today we explore how the Demonic force of Devil Kazuya contributes to this.

    I really like how you mentioned emontionless passion, that track is pretty much the definiton of who Kazuya is as a character (at least in my vision) - a tragic, conflicted hero who ended up becoming a villain due to a situation that he was submitted to, rather than actually having a choice in the matter. I hope Jin (or Jun, if she is in the new Tekken game) is able to bring back Kazuya's human side now that Heihachi is finally dead, and pretty much the reason why Kazuya was so bitter.
    Great video as always man!

      I don't think the final fight will be between Jin & Kazuya. It will be between Kazuya and Jun or Kazuya and someone/something else. Kazuya's not going to kill Jin because that would be too awful, Jin's not going to kill Kazuya because of Jun, and one is not going to decide to spare the other because that would be too cliche. Harada said he's going to surprise us. Nothing between Jin and Kazuya can be unpredictable.

    On one hand the Devil Gene concept dillutes a bit the moral struggle. On the other hand it reinforces the idea that just because you have devil blood you are NOT destined to be evil. Both Jin and Kazuya have the accursed blood, but their different upbringings and ideals are vastly different and we can see how different they turned out to be.
    Up to Tekken 7 Jin struggled against the devil gene, but in Tekken 8 he seems to have gained the upper hand against his darker half.

    Dorya!! My fav used to be Eddy (Tekken 3 was my first Tekken) but since Tekken Tag Tournament Kazuya has taken the throne. I've been out of the Tekken franchise for a couple of installments, as I feel it has become too OTT, but this vid has rekindled some interest.

      @AlleywayJack  Год назад +1

      It always had a careful balance between legitimate story and OTT weirdness (Roger and Alex in T2 etc was bizarre). But yeah, I agree they've shifted further towards the OTT stuff in recent years, the private military stuff and Azazel in Tekken 6 was just crazy. Though I think Tekken 7's story mode did well to reign it back a little and focus on Heihachi/Kazuya's origin story.

    The idea of Kazuya “selling his soul to the devil for revenge” is one of those Ben Kenobi “what I said was true from a certain point of view” situation. Or similar to the intentional misdirection of Jinpachi having the Devil gene or the concept of the Curse of the Mishima Bloodline overall.
    Based on how it’s explained in tekken 4 and 7, the Devil gene creates a split personality in the host. That’s why kazumi would try to kill Heihachi and forget what happened immediately after. She only seemed to have full control the night she fought Heihachi the final time and he killed her. For Kazuya from tekken 1 through 4, devil is very separate with his own motives and ambitions but it’s still Kazuya. But after tekken 4 Kazuya gained total control over the Devil gene and it reflects in his personality. He was much more quiet and reserved, but after 4 kazuya’s gotten more and more evil and villainous. In T8, after being revealed as a devil to the world, after finally killing Heihachi, there is no line between Kazuya and devil anymore. They’re one and the same, and he’s reveling in it! It looks like Jin may finally have full control now too. Jin already outclasses Kazuya, Heihachi, and Jinpachi in raw martial arts skill but with the full power of the Devil gene? Kazuya’s gonna have a fight on his hands!

      @jermaineobrien6378 Год назад +6

      I very disagree with the part where you said Jin already outclasses Jinpachi, Heihachi & Kazuya in martial arts no way. It's his Devil power which is the reason he's able to defeat them. It is said by Claudio that Jins Devil power is already stronger and more powerful than his father's. Just cause Jin defeated them one time doesn't automatically mean he outclasses them. Heihachi did trained his grandson pretty well. You forget that Jinpachi, Heihachi and Kazuya are Veteran's with more experience than Jin has.

    • @JoeGodHand
      @JoeGodHand Год назад +1

      @@jermaineobrien6378 I would say with Heihachi and Jinpachi it’s more debatable. Their experience cuts them pretty close to Jin in skill. Kazuya it’s no question. He’s getting carried by his devil gene.
      Think about it this way from even a gameplay standpoint: Kazuya got thrown off that cliff when he was 5. He had less than 5 years to learn Mishima karate under Heihachi. I’m sure reaching blackbelt level knowledge by that age takes raw talent but his experience is limited. That’s why he doesn’t have the more traditional and advanced tools Heihachi and Jinpachi have. His game plan is extremely risky but he excels at his strengths to maximize his rewards. Jin doesn’t have this problem at all. He learned Kazama style, Mishima style, and Kyokushin karate throughout the course of his life. He’s clearly a diligent and dedicated martial artist. He’s far more versatile and adaptable than Kazuya. In regards to Heihachi and Jinpachi, I would argue their dedication to one style is their biggest drawback. Each of them is incredibly powerful and skilled but I think Jin’s mind is more open as a martial artist. That devil gene definitely gives him a boost but up until this point he hasn’t had full control.

    I never found Kazumi particularly "devil" like. She seems like a vigilante, mystical entity that had a muddied clairvoyence that saw Heihachi as the root of all evil when she is the cause to that self-fulfilling prophecy. Kazuya inherits this mystical essence, but when Heihachi has essentially killed him, Kazuya allows Devil to corrupt that essence in the deal for revenge, which is why his transformation is the prototypical gothic demon form. Otherwise Devil without a host has only been portrayed as purple energy, while Devil Kazumi exhibits traits more akin to an angel than a devil.
    I liked this version of the story with Kazuya having the choice between selling his soul and dying as opposed to having always been the demon by default. It adds more depth and is more tragic. Also adding that selling his soul condemns the rest of his bloodline makes Devil a more devious character in itself.
    The glowing red scar and eyes also needs to come back. At least they have the warped devil voice now

    She wouldn't be there if there was no chance for Kazuya to redeem himself.
    His prime goal was to kill Heihachi and avenge himself, as well as her mother, which was done in Tekken 7.
    Now, what's Kazuya's goal ? I believe there's more than only power and domination.

    Has the Devil Gene really retconned Devil as a separate entity? T4 introduced the Devil Gene _yet_ Devil is still considered a separate entity in this game. Heck, Devil in T4 also confirmed, with its own words, that it lost its other half to Jin when Kazuya nearly died in T2 (which ppl assumed was retconned by the DG concept). It led me to believe that the DG just allows one to become host to a devil entity, which is the source of the DG carrier's power, not really the source of the devil itself.
    As for the Hachjios, it's possible that they've learned to control this single Devil entity and that there could only be one Devil Hachijo at a given time. It could explain why the clan sent only one of their own after Heihachi. Multiple Devil Hachijos would've made things easier.

    See I like tekken cause you can really take it several ways. I see it as kazuya took the devil within himself to beat his father and Jin is mirroring his father’s decent into darkness but for different reasons. Jin starts ww3 to destroy corrupt governments and tyrannical corporations. Casualties happened like Miguel sister but her husband could have been someone evil. It all hits the moral grey area just like tekken 1&2. I’m hoping the new game shows us that the devil gene processors have the ability to be an angel or a devil. Kazumi is my prime example her devil form had devil like attributes but she was trying to kill heiachi because he was going to doom the world.

    Retconning the devil into the devil gene serves a couple of purposes in my opinion. It gave them a story to give Heihachi some degree of redemption. It also justifies Jun's desire to save Kazuya because he was literally born with this genetic defect (whether it can be cured remains to be seen). Everything seems to point towards no redemption for Kazuya, but a big sign for me is actually Claudio and not Jun. They introduced a literal exorcist into the series. Why would they introduce an exorcist? If Claudio doesn't at least try to exorcize Kazuya, it would seem like bad writing, or a case where maybe some of the writers wanted Claudio to save Kazuya and some of the other writers didn't. I think Jun will save Jin but not Kazuya. Anyway, the ending will probably include something unpredictable as Harada has said he is going to surprise us.

    Tekken 4 is my personal favorite in the series and the way it internalized the temptations and hatred Kazuya and Jin feel rather than attributing it solely to an external force are a big part of why I love it, but I sympathize with fans of the original Classic Deal with the Devil T1 and 2 went with (and I'm not crazy about where the Devil Gene and Mishima stories have gone from T5 onwards, so hopefully knowing that some Devil Gene fans aren't happy either will give OG fans some schadenfreude, heh heh). I may, however, have an explanation for why T4 introduced the Devil Gene rather than sticking solely to demonic possession like T1-3 did.
    T4 toned down a lot of Tekken's elements (Heihachi as the boss rather than a monster, Combot rather than Mokujin or Gun Jack and fighting in malls and streets rather than blank rooms) and I think grounding the Devil to a science concept may have been part of that vibe they wanted to go for. This backfired when T5 onwards had the Gene predate Kazuya (I believe T4's intent was that Kazuya still sold out to the Devil, but his bond was passed down to Jin through birth, which is why they both had a portion of the Devil's power in that game and Kazuya wanted it all back) and everything got bigger and louder than T2 ever was, but nobody can tell the future, heh heh.
    For what it's worth, I think it was always Tekken's intent to say that Kazuya's spiritual degradation was never COMPLETELY The Devil's fault, as Kazuya's T2 ending seems to say that Devil less corrupted him and more gave him the means to act on his worst impulses and he has no interest in restraining himself (the "Emotionless" in his theme is that he has no mercy, but the "Passion" is that he has a ravenous hunger for material pleasure and will use The Devil like a weapon to get it)...Makes sense for a sneaky demon, if you ask me, since just body-controlling someone doesn't taint their soul and I imagine that's what demons truly want out of their bargains. Looked at it that way, I'd say The Devil is still alive and well even as late as T7; just that like all demons, he's gotten better about lying about his presence.

      I feel the devil matter was interesting from T4 but Jin's T3 ending proves that it is hereditary as well as thr T3 intro. I always wondered who had it before Kazuya since Heihachi's plan was to dispose of Jin in the 4 years before T3 after 'seeing the same dangerous power that Kazuya once had' per the manual.

    • @seantaylor424
      @seantaylor424 Год назад +1

      @TobiasSaibot87 If I'm not mistaken, T3 originally portrayed Devil as looking to inhabit Jin after Kazuya's death, though I forget if it was just thematic on Devil's part or if the hereditary bond was useful to him. I think T4 went with that route too, since Kazuya wanted "it all back" and didn't resume his full Devil Form until he sapped Jin of his power in his non-canonical ending...But then T5 went full-hog with the genetic pass-down and Kazuya even went Full Devil to escape Hon Maru (and I only recently learned that he can go Full Devil in gameplay as early as T6). A shame Jinpachi wasn't kept as the source of the Devil Gene, but it did always make one wonder why Heihachi was the odd man out.
      Though, I don't think that the Gene had to predate Kazuya for Heihachi to consider killing Jin in T3's lead-up. Given his familiarity with Kazuya, training of Jin and intent to use him to bait Ogre, I think Heihachi had enough reason to not take chances with Jin without even needing to consider this condition might predate his son.

      @@seantaylor424 I definitely agree with your Kazumi/Jinpachi explanation.
