  • The Kazuya Mishima story is one of the most compelling narrative threads of the Tekken fighting game series. In this character retrospective I explore what sets Kazuya's evolution apart from other protagonists of the fighting genre, and also consider aspects of gameplay, story and aesthetics that show his considerable character development and moral downfall over the course of the games from Tekken 1 through to Tekken 7.

    The devil gene aspect of story makes it easier for me to feel sorry for kazuya as it's made obvious that kazuya never sold his soul as a kid,combined with all the losses and betrayal he's suffered from. family means nothing to kazuya because his father has tried to kill him multiple times, his mother sent someone to kill him,his grandpa was resurrected and he too was gonna kill him,his gf jun left him when he needed her the most,lee backstabbed him,lars has got issues with him and jin is planning to kill him.He probably wants to become the most powerful man in world because that way he feels safe,as he couldn't do anything as a child because he was weak.The ultimate tragic figure in tekken💔

    • @Nothingtotheleft
      @Nothingtotheleft 6 месяцев назад +2

      Honestly that couldn't be more true in my eyes. Behind the devil gene and the villainous attitude is just someone who is taking the role that Heihachi told him by example that he should have. When your father brings up to a mountain and tells you that you're weak and pathetic before throwing you off a cliff, obviously that's gonna send a message. Message being strength is all that matter or, a better way to phrase it, "Power is everything."

      Because Harada couldn't give less of a fuck about the characters. The characters went to shit, and development is replaced by cheap comedy gags.
      The ONLY characters that get proper development are Heihachi, Kazuya, and Jin. And Jin's is weaker than the first two.

    Kazuya under Seichii Ichii was very compelling protagonist due to his resentment leading to his loss of humanity. I'm a little disappointed at Harada's content of keeping him a pure evil character when his childhood is the most tragic of any Tekken character. It's kind of disgusting that he's being vilified as nothing more than a demon simply for the circumstances of his birth while his father, the man responsible for betraying his father and being generally ruthless, gets painted in a more sympathetic light. Heihachi is great for being the object of hatred in Kazuya's story, and beginning the dark cycle which plagues the Mishima bloodline. His character becomes weaker to me if you attempt to brush that in a more positive light. Nothing wrong with humanizing him, but his actions up until now haven't been ones of a hero. Neither has Kazuya's, to be fair, but there is that greater level of tragedy in his background compared to his father.

  • @coletrain583
    @coletrain583 Год назад +4

    Kazuya is one of the most fucked over characters in media, his Mom planed to kill him, his father threw him off the cliff and all he had to do was earn everything from nothing. At this point, it's no wonder Kazuya turned out the way he did, yet no matter how much he tries, he can't ever be free of his suffering, in fact, he even started to think he needs in order to have a purpose as even he got his revenge against Heihachi, Kazuya probably felt more empty than he thought as his father was not only his greatest enemey, but his most worthy opponent and without him, there is no one left to challenge him. Coupled with his Mother revealed to plan kill both of them, it only furthered shattered Kazuya's world even more, realizing he would be betrayed either way.

    On top of that, it also reflects in his style of karate that I've noticed, and how he ran the Zaibatsu in Tekken 2 and G-Corp onwards from Tekken 4:
    He was always a whiff-punisher, unlike his dad who had weak lows but a TON of stomp-out-mids that made him safe on block and were meant to crumble the foe under frame-trap pressure.
    Kazuya though, as you've noticed, does a TON of back-swing blows given his unsafe frame data in general, which basically shows he doesn't like to show-off a subtle side like his father. He's completely shameless since then to basically show how much of a threat he himself can be, and in his fighting style he saves those big swinging blows for when his opposition does something stupid so he can force all that power down their throat at their most vulnerable.
    Kazuya has not been one to waste power like how Heihachi stamps out his foes with his attacks, he instead just waits and throws out everything in full force instead of wasting power to form a showy wall of sorts.

    You forgot to talk about the "angel" side of Kazuya which surprisingly only appears when Jun is around. The reason of why Kazuya lost fo Heihachi in Tekken 2 was because of his confusion while been with Jun. His personality was splitted between his good side Angel and his bad side Devil. In the official handbooks of T3, it is said that Jun and Kaz were attracted to each other and this lead to Kaz to have a good side so he lost because of that. Is so sad how Harada has mistreated Kaz so much, he had a good side and now he is "all evil". We´ll see in T8, I hope to see Jun again and spell Devil once and for all.

    Still annoyed at how Harada wants to paint Heihachi and Jin as simply misunderstood villains worthy of sympathy while painting Kazuya as pure evil.
    Like one is responsible for destroying his family and starting this whole mess and the other decided that world war III was the best solution for riding the world of the devil possession/gene. But Kazuya was screwed from the beginning and Harada goes "nope, he's pure evil"
    Also I agree, the constant retconning of the Devil/devil gene is annoying. First it was just a demonic entity. Then it was part of the bloodline. Then Jinpachi was the source of it. Then Azazel. Now Kazumi. Like, I love Tekken in all of its goofiness, but Jesus Christ.

    • @AlleywayJack

      I agree with this. Kazuya has gone from tragic anti-hero to villain with very little exposition. His relationship to Jun has been a missing aspect of the games and clearly this came about through some aspect of him being good. I hope its explored in Tekken 8 now the Heihachi arc has concluded.

    • @wwemusicfanC
      @wwemusicfanC Год назад +6

      @@AlleywayJack I somewhat doubt it. They really tried to present Jin starting WWIII and being a dick as a noble effort on his part at the end of scenario campaign. Harada favors Jin and even said in an interview that he'd apologize to Jin for everything he put him through if he somehow met him in real life.
      Like, not that Jin's life wasn't rough, but he didn't have it nearly as bad as Kazuya did. Jin had his mother for most of his life and then had friends/rivals who cared for him in Xiaoyu, Miharu and even Hwoarang to an extent.
      Who did Kazuya have? Dude lost his loving mother and grandfather before the age of 6, his dad tired to kill him and he was alone until he met Jun. The closest thing Kazuya has/had to a friend in the entire series is Bruce Irvin of all people.

    The two different devil origins fit together just fine. If Jin can resist his devil genetics then it makes sense that another person might choose to embrace it.
    All the scenes of Jin and Kazuya meeting a separate devil entity might be symbolic of a spiritual battle. Another explanation is that the devil gene marks you as being compatible with actual demonic entities.

    My theory is that Jun has some association with angel and unknown... from her endings in tekken games, see seems compassionate and a good person but from tekken tag 2 she transforms into unknown and has the backwards tattoo of jin who was marked by devil at the end of the opening in tekken 3... which tells me that devil maybe corrupted Jun and unknown is her dark alter ego but angel is her light side from her ending in tekken tag 2... which is why jin can be good and bad hence when he is normal (besides tekken 6's storyline was ridiculous) devil jin is evil from tekken 5's story... kazuya is the key here being the evil and succumbed to his devil gene which infected Jun I think. Though it's just my theory.

    To comment your take on Heihachi beating Kazuya's devil form, I think Heihachi was the more experienced and if the fight didn't drag on, he would've defeated him.
    Similar to Star Wars, Kazuya on the other hand was the strongest fighter by raw stats. It wasn't about can Kazuya kill Heihachi, it was about whether or not Kazuya could survive survive Heihachi. Given his relative youth and far superior stamina, that's exactly what happened which lead to Heihachi's death by heart failure. I think Kazuya's final statement on who remains standing supports this claim. He too realized why he won in the end despite it seeming hopeless.

    My theory for the Devil Gene sort of combines it's dynamic presentation throughout the games. In Kazuya's story in Tekken 4. After beating Heihachi once again and being led into Honmaru, we see Devil overtake Kazuya, implying they are two entities, but Kazuya manages to regain control and absorb Devil's power into his own, gaining complete control over it.
    Jumping to Tekken 7's story, we hear a Hachijo family nursery rhyme passed down the generations, telling of a demon playing in a red river, symbolizing a bloodline. I believe that one if Kazuya's ancestors was given the power by this demon, who continued to live through each generation. Maybe the power of the devil IS an external force and the Devil Gene is the generationally developed ability to master and absorb this power.

    • @Ryutobi
      @Ryutobi Год назад

      Yes but that secret was also lost when the Hachijo disappeared. The specifics of that is unknown, but it is implied that after the incident at the Mishima dojo, Heihachi decided to destroy them in revenge; for using Kazumi, and poisoning his life later on.

    When Kazuya kills Heihachi it isn't with demonic power or the laser blast, it's with his bare hands as a punch to the chest. This has two meanings: the first is that the final blow was emotionally and literally heartbreaking as son kills father, the second is that all Kazuya had to do was be the bigger man. He didn't have to go that far to emerge victorious in his life and instead he's let it slip between his fingers and filled his life with wrath and vengeance. He could've been the stronger man and left

    I think you could edit the video a bit more like when you talk about outfits you should use video of it instead of b roll gameplay against a character you aren't even talking about.

    It would be cool if Casio and Jen just ended up knocking each other out and sharing their stories of Revenge going to separate ways occasionally meeting each other and just testing each other's strength I would prefer that than Jen just straight up killing kazio because he finally got his revenge against tehachi after all these years Jen got his revenge against ogre so you should have been done and over with he was just pissed at hey Hachi so I don't understand why they should kill one another they would seem interesting if it branched off that way or if taken eight had branching story spots like Black Ops 2 did which would also give Tekken 8 a bit more depth and replayability

    I hope he kills Jin in Tekken 8. Jin is overrated.
