    Hey man! I absolutely love your work on the Tekken series and I think that you have got quite an articulate way of presenting your thoughts and analysis on these characters, the lore and the games you do as a whole. I have to agree completely on it being an absolute shame to see Paul take a nosedive from this serious contender and guy with a lot of heart and soul to him where he was essentially the Rocky Balboa of the Tekken series back in the day of he is this guy from the streets and from a working class life and what not who is out to prove that he can go the distance I guess would be a good way to put it. Tekken 4 had Paul in one of the most interesting ways possible whereby he reached this point where as you say, he was considered a joke, a laughing stock and really that guy who everybody just laughs at and writes off as a nobody or a loser thanks to his arrogance and attitude. I do however adore him and Law in Tekken 4 especially because you see that these two guys have fallen on really hard times (more than usual) and it really was a wonderful move by Namco to humanize them as such. Paul has been written off as a joke and he goes all in in the hopes of winning the respect and admiration that he deserves. And once he gets there and finds out Kazuya is there, that's an add on bonus for him right there to make his victory all the more worthwhile. Marshall has fell into depression, becoming an alcoholic and there is something very human about that where you can empathize with these two guys. So this is literally an all or nothing deal for the both of them.
    On that note though, I love and adore Paul's Tekken 4 ending where he's got the whole world in his hands and everything and he looks in the mirror at Marshall's Dojo and sees how he used to be and it's like a kick in the teeth realization of "This is not who I am." Or as he puts it "Ain't my style." and goes right back to being who he was. There's a lot of heart right there. And from T5 onwards they've become a comedic duo which is a shame to see because these two guys are the contenders with the biggest hearts and they go that extra mile. I was very disappointed by T7 for just how far of joke character material that they had become by this point ya know. But hey, it is what it is. PS. Chronologically for the timeline between Tekken 2 and Tekken 3, it's nineteen years in total. Obviously Jin came to Heihachi when he was 15, Heihachi built him up and made him into the rigorous and stronger and then fast forward four years when Jin's now 19 and Heihachi is then essentially like "Alright kid. Now you're ready. Let's seal the deal and test your skills." by announcing TKOIF3 and also using Jin as bait for Ogre. Anyway, apologies for the long post. I look forward to seeing more of your work and I think it's awesome. Keep it up!

      Hey man, thanks for a great post! Your thoughts on Paul are really interesting, particularly the working class aspect which I hadn't previously considered, but I think it accounts for a lot of his determination when it comes down to it.
      I also agree his Tekken 4 ending was a really redemptive inspired look at his character, but I didn't focus on it because it's non-canon. But it would have been nice if this more sincere redemptive quality to him could have been carried through to later games (but as you say - it is what it is. I don't mind the Law/Paul comedy angle too much).

      Meh hey I know my shit when it comes to Tekken haha. You're quite welcome and thank you for the great content. Likewise on not minding it because you see the fun duo with comedy angles in martial arts movies and like Rush Hour, Drive (thank you someone who knows what Drive is!) and a whole load of others. Who do you plan on doing next?

    Perhaps Paul could be characterized as being overly ambitious from the start. He wanted to be the best fighter and when he wasn’t he started his rivalry with the fighter who ended up winning Tekken which was Kazuya. It could
    of been intended for him to have always been comic relief to some degree or at least a more light hearted rival for Kazuya. But I’m curious to know why they keep with the man vs bear thing though, it’s a little old at this point.

    • @AlleywayJack
      @AlleywayJack  4 года назад +6

      Yeah you're right that it's hard to tell whether he was intended as comic relief in the earlier games owing to the lack of cutscenes/narrative slideshows (although Laws T2 ending shows the failed backflip so the rudiments of comedy were there early on I suppose). And I agree the Kuma/Paul thing has run its course!

      If this was true doesnt make sense as to why they had him (technically) win the 3rd iron fist tournament (as they couldve easily had Jin win) and come close in the 2nd and tie with kazuya. Tekken 5-6 really ruined a lot of side characters stories (Eddy Law Paul Ganryu)

      Yah dude I love Paul in Tekken 1 and 2. His establishment in the game seems pretty vague outside of what I mentioned though. He enters believing himself the best, loses out and develops some real hate for Kazuya. In his youthful angry days he came across best though, imo.
