    Hello Mexico! Brushes are handmade of different natural bristles. I use mostly hard bristle brushes like Mountain Horse Hair brush or Bamboo/Orchid brush. In this video I think I was using a small brush called Basic Hard or Basic Soft - very cheap but good for the subject because the bristles are short.

You would enjoy my "Dancing Brush" video, which is all performance to music and no talking. You can find it on my website, joyfulbrush dot com.

    Yes, I use a variety of so-called 'rice' papers. If you are on facebook, join my page there. I discuss what papers and brushes I am using on each painting, and often run a series of photos showing the development of a painting - particularly useful for painters of landscapes.

      Thanks, Catalina! Chinese brush painting is considered a 'performance art' not just a graphic art; that's why we learn to let the brush dance on the paper, with no pre-sketching.

    Very good question! Mostly it flows dynamically from the dance of the brush; however, there are certain compositional rules that I follow such as triangles, "one-long, one-short, one-medium", "host (main flower), honored guest (next sized flower), minor guests (buds, butterflies, bees)". Does this help?

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies

      Thanks for the kind comment. I always use some form of Asian paper, known in the West as "rice" or "mulberry" paper. For the roses I used a sheet of raw (that means unsized and absorbent) paper. Look online for xuan, shuen or even rice paper. Many places sell it.

    Hi Virginia, Thanks for the reply, and so quickly too. I must ask you, you peaked my interest when I saw you were using silk dyes I have literally 9 quart sized bottles of H.Dupont French silk dyes that I have wanted so badly to see if I could use for something else until I got some more silk scarves to dye. I tell you Dupont dyes go a looooong long way, I would say those quarts will last me 5 life times. LOL :-)
    Now that being said when you use those to the stain your brushes any worse than watercolors? any special way you use them, do you dilute them agressively or full strength? Thanks so much for your reply. I still want to get down your way to meet you one day. Now that Spring/Summer has come I may do that.

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies  9 лет назад

      Hi Mitchell, wow, yes, those bottles will last you a lifetime and a half! I would put less than half a teaspoon of each color in shallow containers. I would not dilute it. I would mix a little Dab 'n Stick glue with water and dip my brush in that before taking a very small amount of dye on the brush. I don't recall that the brushes were particularly stained. You have to paint ver quickly when using the dyes because they spread so easily.

    • @1961MCW
      @1961MCW 9 лет назад

      Wow Virginia, at last another use for silk dyes, and they will still last me a lifetime and half!
      Do you always use rice papers? I have some Hot Press Professional grade watercolor papers here as well as Cold Press, I am sure the absorbancy is different from traditional rice paper since the WC papers are so much heavier most 140 lb some 300lb just trying to use things i have right now, however I have been to the sites that you suggested earlier and plan to order some rice papers as well.
      Thanks so much for all of your help and expertise! :-)

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies  4 года назад

      You can wet-mount in the traditional way (corn starch or wheat paste) or you can use a special adhesive tissue and an iron. Hope this helps!

    Hi Virginia, I spoke with you back a while i am from close to Harrisonburg, VA and was wandering if you use regular watercolors or what they refer to as Chinese Watercolors which are said to be. between a Goucahe and watercolor?

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies  9 лет назад

      Hi Mitchell. I use all sorts of things! On my Joyful Brush videos I am mostly using silk dyes; nowadays I use a combination of Marie's Chinese watercolors, Chinese chip colors and a few western watercolors. Ning Yeh at Oriental Art Supply lists the western colors that he thinks are good substitutes for the colors from China. Both OAS and Blue Heron Arts sell a range of paints, inks and dyes.
