  • Master painter of Chinese brush technique I-Hsiung Ju describes in English how to paint and color waterfalls, mists and clouds. He demonstrates distant and close-up waterfalls and the placement and size of rocks, cliffs and rapids. He shows how to create the effects of water and how to create and modify a composition. He explains how to create mist and clouds by adding a wash to the paper. He clarifies the Chinese brush painting and sumi-e rules for his subjects.
Master Chinese brush painter Professor I-Hsiung Ju (朱一雄 or Zhu Yixiong in Pinyin) created this teaching video in 1990. This is a 40 minute excerpt from the full video of 95 minutes. Prof I-Hsiung Ju’s books on the basic subjects of “The Four Gentlemen” (“Book of Bamboo”, “Book of Orchid”, “Book of Chrysanthemum” and “Book of Plum”) are favorites with Chinese brush painting and sumi-e students throughout the world and are currently available as ebooks at Barnes and Noble bit.ly/3rBxpD0. His tutorial videos on flowers, birds, animals, landscapes, rocks and waterfalls can be purchased as DVDs at www.ihsiungju.com. You can also see more of his Chinese brush paintings at www.joyfulbrush.com.

Nice video - I like the grey colors, I use Perussion blue with burned sienna or burned amber or replace the blue with Phatelo blue....very nice browns and grays. Clouds are hard, do not make the mistake to overdo🙂. For waterfall phatello blue with yellow ochre gives a nice light and warm blue....Have fun!

I love the light humor of his narration! 'Here I take a brownish gray. Or rather a grayish brown...'. Awesome! 🙂 Of course the teaching is awesome too!

What an amazing video! Professor I-Hsiung takes us step by step through painting different waterfalls and their associated mist. It is wonderful to watch the movement of his brush and how he achieves realistic effects so quickly and perfectly. His explanations make it so easy to follow. He makes me want to pick up my brush and follow him. I know I am in the presence of a master!

Amazing video! I’ll definitely try that - though I guess getting the right ink and color tones onto the brush is much harder than what it looks like in the video. Maybe I could try using an old plate (as he does at least with the color) or I could use two different brushes for different ink and color tones.

Mixing plates and saucers are a good way to go. Some artists make several different shades of gray on separate saucers, from light to dark, then just add strong black to the tip of the brush. Prof Ju used one brush to create the rocks and waterfalls. He would wait until it was dry before he added color, usually using the same brush. A soft-hair brush or a combination brush works, as does a mountain horse-hair brush. He would use a broad flat brush to add the mist, but you can also use a regular soft brush. Your skill level will improve as you practice. Have fun and enjoy the dance of the brush!
