      I used to have the exact same set of lenses and the adapter for my G6 (which I got after watching your video about old Panasonic cameras!).
      Canon FD lenses are amazing, especially considering the price, and they're fast to put on/get off the camera, unlike the M42 lenses.

    I got bit by the vintage lens bug a few weeks back. I got a Takumar 200mm f4 and a Vivitar 24mm f2.8 for $35-ish on ebay. Then I proceeded to get a Takumar 55mm f2. I'm absolutely in love. Especially with the fact that I was already saving up for a cheap modern wide angle lens before. With the money I saved up for single lens, I was able to get 3 different lens which have completely changed how I take pictures. Definitely an upgrade from the kit lens.

    I love the Black 1/4 Promist filters. I put one on my Sony PD150 back in 2000 and there was no looking back. It takes away that hard edge look of video.
    I don't use the PD150 anymore, but I have adapters.... Halation! That is exactly it. One thing, you should work on your lighting. You have the high contrast look that I have noticed in the faces of crazy people I have crossed paths with, only they also seem to have a black cloud around them. Lighting could fix this. We always had stage lighting which was something else again. In the period of 2000 to 2007 I never used auto focus or auto anything. Auto just was a distraction from the scenes being recorded. For Flaring, try lens hoods.

    This is a very timely video. I've just bought a couple of old Panasonic M4/3 cameras and one Panasonic (bottom end) lens and was very underwhelmed with the lens quality for the money we have to pay for them way down under. When I compare the operation to my old Olympus OM lenses, mechanically, there is no comparison. The hole in the front to let the light in is massively different. I have a dumb adaptor on the way and should be here in the next few days. Plan is to get an EOS or Nikon to M4/3 focal reducer and some basic OM to EOS or Nikon adaptors. These OM mount lenses were brought between '79 and about '82.

    Out of the cheaper vintage lenses, the Canon FD's have the been the best. Just all-around great! They are small and light-weight. Bokeh is often lovely, i like the colors and they're often quite nice wide open too, which is rare for vintage lenses on digital bodies. Great quality optics, still very good. So far my favorite is the FD 35mm f2.8, but i do covet the 24mm and 35mm f2.0. Eventually... Focusing is smooth and nice with FD's, but the aperture control is clunky, that's only downside besides the slightly cumbersome FD mount itself.
    The older Fuji lenses are also often great, they can be truly beautiful and build amazingly well. Somewhat similar to Canon in optics, though i'd say Canon is often better. Maybe it comes down to the better bokeh and better wide open. Pentax-M lenses has the best manual focusing experience i've ever had, one just has to experience it, atleast once. I'd recommend Pentax-M for those who want their gateway drug to manual focusing, something to practice with. Great punchy colors too.
    Minolta MD III 35-70mm f3.5 with 1:4 macro is one fantastic aswell, damn nice optics. Not much on m43 though, the view is quite limited.
    All in all, most of the older vintage lens manufacturers have something unique going for them, so i'd not knock against any of them. See what you can get for good price and go for it, give it a try and see if it sticks. You can sell them rather easily too (when the time comes), so it's a low risk investment. In fact, if you present it right you can make profit quite easily to good degree.

    Great review! I use the FD 28mm 2.8 and FD 55mm 1.2 with my BMPCC 4K. The 28mm I had adapted by Simmod to EF mount, focal ring, de-click, etc. The 55mm I'm currently using that same focal reducer you're using (I believe. Different brand, but looks identical). The 55mm 1.2 looks VERY soft, while the 28mm looks incredible. I have a Metabones Ultra that adapts the 28mm to the pocket 4K. I've read that the 55mm 1.2 is an inherently soft lens, but I think the cheaper focal reducer adds to it. I'll be curious how it performs when I eventually have Simmod adapt that one too. They're currently shut down temporarily due to Covid-19. The one thing that makes me nervous about the off-brand focal reducer is that it seems to be a little to close for comfort to the electronics of my camera. I'll be posting a review of the 28mm 2.8 with the Simmod modifications in the coming weeks if you're curious.

    • @Antiganos

      Most legit movies don't use that shallow of focus, it's a digital age trend, so use what you've got. The kit lens will be just fine. If you want to buy everyone's favorite lens, grab a Canon "Nifty Fifty" 50mm F1.8, you can buy them used or new for very cheap. RUclips is your friend. Also! Your camera has a crop sensor, so any lens you use will be 1.6x the focal length. So that 50mm on your camera would be closer to an 80, science!

    I got a vintage Minolta MC 50mm F1.4 on my GH2 and the crop factor sucks. Everything is so zoomed in you need to move an extra 10 feet back to take a picture of anything. I can focus it well for photos cuz GH2 lets you punch in beforehand. But it's hard to focus in video with moving shots because GH2 doesn't have focus peaking and won't punch in for video once you press record.

    Great video Nigel. However, I don't understand why people buy 50mm lenses on an MFT sensor (even if a speedbooster is involved). Sure, it's important to have some longer lenses, but having people buying multiple 50mm lenses makes no sense to me. What you need for filmmaking is (mostly) wide lenses. If you watch blockbusters, the majority of the shots are shot with wide lenses. Look at the latest James Bond for example. In contrast, drama indie movies are cropped in way more, making them look cheap and claustrophobic (unless of course, that's your goal). Personally, I can't stand that look. I like my field of view to be wide and fast. For that reason, I'd go for the Vivitar 19mm, the MIR 21mm, then there's a plethora of vintage 24 and 28mm at around f/2.5 (I recently bought some Tamrons for that job), and then you need a fast 35mm (the Russian one I got was f/2). Then, and only then, you should opting for 50 or 85 or 135mm (which I also did just to complete my set). I got a bunch of these vintage lenses from IronGlass, with the anamorphic mod. For ultra wide, I have the Rokinon 12mm (modern lens for ultra wides, because these didn't really exist in the vintage realm).
    As for a pro mist filter, personally I don't like them at all. That "halation" you're talking about, is blooming the highlights in digital sensors, that are already low in dynamic range compared to film. To get a softer look, simply use your vintage lenses and use your modern lenses just for photography.

    • @NigelBarros
      @NigelBarros  4 года назад

      Thanks for the input! Although wide, standard and long lenses are all essential and disregarding longer lenses just cause some Hollywood movies use them less frequently isn’t a basis not to have one at all or to write them off as only being used in cheap films. Wedding filmmakers, action sports videographers, documentary filmmakers etc, can all benefit from longer lenses to isolate their subjects. It really all depends on what you’re filming. Wide and fast is great but that’s what I stuck with for a while and it got old and repetitive really fast, so for me having a good range of focal lengths helps me mix things up more.

    • @EugeniaLoli
      @EugeniaLoli 4 года назад

      @@NigelBarros I never said they're not used in filmmaking. What I did say though is that it makes no sense to have mostly longer lenses, often duplicates at the same focal length. It's good you got the 24mm. Consider the Vivitar 19mm, 28, 35, and a fast native 12mm. With the longer ones you have, you can then have a full set for a narrative.

    • @NigelBarros
      @NigelBarros  4 года назад

      Eugenia Loli I had a 12mm f1.4 and 12mm Rokinon before, now I use my 15mm for my wider shots. when shooting weddings, my 42.5mm is on my camera 95% of the time. I love the 85mm field of view mixed with a 35mm equivalent field of view, for me that’s the perfect combo. I think my next FD will be either the 35-105, 85 and the 35mm FD’s
