Hi thank you for your video. I will be looking for these lenses for my Lumix S5. But, tell me, which adapter will go best with the lumix S5? The link you put in the description contains several adapters. I do not know which one to choose. Thanks
I’ve solved this problem, I wanted to get something way too nice for an AE-1, I was looking at an FD 85mm 1.2, which is my favorite lens for my actual camera I use for work. Found out for $30 I can get an EF mount film camera lol. Scratched that itch with the new lens on an old camera and stopped looking for expensive hobby glass haha
Just got my S5 like 4 months ago and I need some options for my lens mount, AND I FINALLY HAVE ONE! THANKS MAN! Can't wait to try my FD Lenses straightaway!
Just try portraits with 85mm, 100mm, 135mm or 200mm vintage lenses. It will blow your mind. The only problem with some lenses are the CA (removable in post) and some nervous background blur... But when you learn which distances and apertures are the better for soft background blur then the results are awesome

I love FD's specifically, but some of the Soviet lenses are pretty amazing! I have fallen back in love with vintage lenses, 20 years into my pro career. My RUclips channel is now dominated by old lenses!
My hot take on the FD series of lenses is that people should NOT adapt them for Canon's EF mount for the sole purpose of image degradation. In short, the FD lenses have a shorter flange distance than the standard lenses produced at the time, so to use them on EF mounted bodies, the adapters available have a piece of glass that is not held up to standard and will cause more chromatic aberrations and less sharpness all around. However! The FD's and nFD's are and absolute unit when it comes to mirrorless cameras! The adapter may be a little more expensive, but it is 100% worth it to get the best image quality out of these lenses. Super glad you are enjoying them! Hopefully this helps people in their search for vintage glass!
I have one of those adapters with the glass, you're right. but when you use them on anything else that doesn't need that extra glass adapter they're great!

Man I agree, I was digging out my lenses I'd picked up ages ago thrifting and tried out the Cannon 50mm FD on my Nex-7 which isn't an amazing camera by any means and I was absolutely in love with it right away. lol
Hai haiiii! I ALSO have a nex-7 with a 50mm, i’m rocking the FD 1.8 S.C over here, messed with the colors in camera a little, threw a soeedbooster on, it produces some of the most beautiful images even in lowlight. The 1080p video is manageable to grade if you drop the sharpness and saturation, but even with standard colors it renders some BEAUUUTIFUL stuff, the speedbooster I use doesn’t really noticeably reduce sharpness, and when things aren’t crispy enough, 10/10 recommend. The nex-7’s only downfall is the dogwater autofocusing, it really has a beautiful and unique sensor though, so vintage lenses with manual focus really show what the camera is capable of
Really need to consider vintage lenses after watching this. Thanks for all the info here. Have to check out GOBE adapters too. Love the shots you were able to get with these lenses!
I have owned those exact 2 lenses for 32 years. They came with my very first camera, the Canon AE-1. They now continue to live on .... on modern cameras. I've even added a few more this weekend. Well .. once they arrive.

I am probably buying the S5 because of your videos and your input om twitter. Now I’m looking to order the adapter home to Norway and find a few fd lenses. What are you doing to me man!? Nice work though! Love your videos!
Growing up mostly with digital it took a bit to get used to the analog like look of vintage lenses. When people jump into this, they have to understand the rendering is nowhere near the same. I had to really look at what was going on to appreciate it. For a while it felt like something was missing in the images. It's like looking at TVs in a store and they're playing whatever demo video. You're looking at what's playing and all you keep thinking is how it looks hyper real. That's how modern lenses render compared to vintage lenses. Not that the modern isn't awesome, there's just a sameness you can't get away from no matter what you do. Personally I've stopped using anything but vintage lenses for my own personal work. Except modern MF lenses like Voigtlander.
I swear I was gonna get the Helios 44-2 back in 2019. I should have pulled the trigger. 35 bucks and free shipping. Now they are all 60 bucks or more. Gawd I regret not doing it before.
Next you should really go down the rabbit hole that is Leica R. funny enough, my first ever one came in the mail - a Leica R Summicron 50mm f/2 V2. man it’s lovely. i understand now. might toss my vintage Contax Zeiss glass, but not really.
I have never used manual focus before as a beginner but I should definitely give it a shot! I love the look of the vintage stuff! It looks so cool! Kinda want to pick up a vintage lens in the future now 😅😅😅 Awesome video Patrick! 😁
There’s a lot of misinformation about SC versus SSC; both are multi coatings, it was really just a marketing thing in the 70’s as it was a cheap way to up-sale people and there was a big “coating” war between lens makers. Nothing a good lens hood can’t fix.
hey! i have a question... i'm wrapping my head around the choice of my first "professional" camera body.....i know that everybody says that Sony is the best (like a7 iii or iv) but i dont like it! i love lumix s5/s5ii and also fujifilm xt3/xt4 and fuji in general. I make videos, short movies and artsy things in general like video art and stuff...i really appreciate something different so i have LOVED this video because honestly i just wanna use vintage lenses from now on.. what body whould u recommend me ? i really have no idea !! also, sorry for bad english but i'm italian 😅 hope u can help me
Do you find any danger or collection of dust or debris as a direct effect of the vintage lenses paired with adapters? My only drawback or concern with using these is the possibility of damaging the sensor.
Amazing stuff and so inspiring. I am having difficulties finding adapter for my LUMIX S5, i mainly want to adapt Canon FD lenses but also M42 lenses. You think you can point me in the right direction? Thaanks
The FL and the FD and nFD mounts are interchangeable with minor exceptions as the FL 2,5 35mm and the older 19mm. The bayonet has the same dimensions as the first R-lenses from 1955. The difference is the amount the lenses protrudes in the mirror box of the camera body. The A Series of cameras had larger mirrors which could interfere with the rear lens group. And, of course, the signal elements are different but downgrade compatible with loss of some functions.
Nice work! I’ve been using the 28 and the 50 1.4 as well - love them. Quick question: how are you finding the file sizes with the S5 external recording? Too brutal? I’m thinking about going that direction because the Prores samples look pretty great, but I’m worried I’ll wind up blowing a fortune on storage.
Thanks Ben! I don’t use the external recording I don’t really see the need for it. I tested it for my initial review to see how the RAW worked/looked but the internal codec is really strong in 10 bit and like you said it will just eat up storage. Don’t really see a positive ROI on external recording. Maybe if I was doing something where we had to really push it in post but I can’t imagine that scenario to be honest. I’ve been shooting everything in v-log and the file hasn’t fallen apart on me yet. Even if I mess up and clip out. Easy fix to bring it back. I mean it’s obviously nice that if for whatever reason a client wanted RAW or ProRes you wouldn’t have to transcode but for normal use the internal 10 bit is really good. Hope that helps!
Great to know! Thanks for the detailed response. btw I love seeing West End Toronto spots in your videos - great place to be (maybe not at the moment, but in general).
@@b.w.6615 the speed booster works so terribly that you would have to have an adapter on top of it. I’m just not into it. Fuji is good because it’s simple. This makes it too complicated IMO.

@@hermanborgstrm6276 you get the hang of it pretty quickly!
Such good shots! Love this. Every now and then I throw an FD lens on my Canon 80d and it's a blast.
Also big fan of those closing comments ;)
😂
Definitely check out Media Divisions video/lesson on Canon FD / K35's.
ive seen it. its good
First lens I got. And it’s a darling!
Topcor made some excellent lenses ,try one if you can .
Everyone loves those Helios
Hi! very good video. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year.
cheers!
Bro you got me laughing with your outro I love it
👌🙏
Next you should really go down the rabbit hole that is Leica R. funny enough, my first ever one came in the mail - a Leica R Summicron 50mm f/2 V2. man it’s lovely. i understand now. might toss my vintage Contax Zeiss glass, but not really.
Nice!
Awesome vid. I’m going to buy that Gobe adapter today for my S5. Quick question: do the FD lenses have threads for ND filters?
yes usually 55mm
I have never used manual focus before as a beginner but I should definitely give it a shot! I love the look of the vintage stuff! It looks so cool! Kinda want to pick up a vintage lens in the future now 😅😅😅 Awesome video Patrick! 😁
Cheers!! Grab one cheap!
There’s a lot of misinformation about SC versus SSC; both are multi coatings, it was really just a marketing thing in the 70’s as it was a cheap way to up-sale people and there was a big “coating” war between lens makers. Nothing a good lens hood can’t fix.
Whoa..So the footage 1:35 is all internal recording no gimbal?? (just subbed btw) if so im definitely sold
Correct 🙏
Try the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 28-85 mm C/Y. It is as good as a prime throughout the zoom range. You wont go go near Canon FD ever again.
i’ve used it - i have a buddy with a full Zeiss kit. it’s fine - i wouldn’t buy it.
@@impatrickt tell more
alright im convinced. you got me LOL
🔥🔥🔥
What lens did you shoot the talking head parto of this video?
THANK YOU
Thank you for this video! I love vintage lenses! Is there a crop with the Lumix S5 when you use FD's lenses?
they are full frame lenses
hey! i have a question... i'm wrapping my head around the choice of my first "professional" camera body.....i know that everybody says that Sony is the best (like a7 iii or iv) but i dont like it! i love lumix s5/s5ii and also fujifilm xt3/xt4 and fuji in general.
I make videos, short movies and artsy things in general like video art and stuff...i really appreciate something different so i have LOVED this video because honestly i just wanna use vintage lenses from now on.. what body whould u recommend me ? i really have no idea !!
also, sorry for bad english but i'm italian 😅 hope u can help me
(my budget is between 1000 and 2500)
.....also...ahaha! are u using blackmagic poket right? i think its good too so now the choices are for 3 different brands!
Nice video PT! Would the canon fd’s look better(subjective) on the s5 vs the bmpcc 4K. Have you tested it on both?
they don’t look better or worse on specific cameras. camera is the camera.
Good job on your, "I was wrong" video. So, some three years later, did you look into anymore vintage lenses?
@@ChasWG thanks! I didn’t actually I switched to Sony and mostly use autofocus now
Great photos, enjoyed this video very much. Well done.
pssst... your making the prices go up :D
Do you find any danger or collection of dust or debris as a direct effect of the vintage lenses paired with adapters? My only drawback or concern with using these is the possibility of damaging the sensor.
I dont worry about dust I dont even use lens caps
I have the 24 and 50. Along with the 35 convex but can’t get the concave as it’s nuclear
Gotta watch out for the Chernobyl lenses
get the canon SSC glass lenses. there is so much glass you can take pics in the dark, no kidding!
I actually got rid of all of these. lol they kinda suck.
@@impatrickt ha! what was the downside? what didnt you like?
@@bernRA shitty focus breathing, flaring, and theyre just built crappy
Amazing stuff and so inspiring. I am having difficulties finding adapter for my LUMIX S5, i mainly want to adapt Canon FD lenses but also M42 lenses. You think you can point me in the right direction? Thaanks
Links in the description
Wait till you try the FD 200 2.8 >< ( may not be your style but this lens is magical)
I’m picking up a 100mm 🙏
@@impatrickt Haha Nice, i never have cause i already own a 135, but seems like a nice lens
Patrick is there a Neutral picture profile on the Panasonic S5
there is but I would recommend Cine-V, L709, or learning V-Log.
@@impatrickt I would like to try Neutral picture profile also alongside the others
Does the Urth have infinity focus? It seems to be a good adaptor
probably depends on the camera you use
Love the Canon FD lenses. But is there a different mount on the SC version, than the NFD`s?
I don’t know what that means
The FL and the FD and nFD mounts are interchangeable with minor exceptions as the FL 2,5 35mm and the older 19mm. The bayonet has the same dimensions as the first R-lenses from 1955. The difference is the amount the lenses protrudes in the mirror box of the camera body. The A Series of cameras had larger mirrors which could interfere with the rear lens group. And, of course, the signal elements are different but downgrade compatible with loss of some functions.
Do you get full frame and 35 crop ?
Nice work!
This lenses with the adapter keep the s5 on full frame mode or change to apsc?
There’s no way for the adapter to send any information to the camera. FD lenses are full frame lenses 🙏
On full frame mode.
Is there an adapter to mount an FD lens to m42 mount camera like K3 16mm
@@DethronerX no clue
Could you make a video like this with the fuji?
I probably won’t it doesn’t interest me but the same principles apply just gotta factor in the aps-c crop.
Thanks anyway for your reply. And yeah i thought it might be interesting because of the speedbooster stuff.
@@b.w.6615 the speed booster works so terribly that you would have to have an adapter on top of it. I’m just not into it. Fuji is good because it’s simple. This makes it too complicated IMO.
@@impatrickt im only interested because i have plenty FD lenses and im not sure if should go for the xt-4 or the lumix s5. And basicly im not into adapters that much. It doesnt help me now, but your video was still great ✌🏼
@@b.w.6615 if you want to use your FD lenses definitely don’t get a Fuji IMO.
What aperture do you use for the photos in your video?
I have no recollection sorry
Does the adapter change the field of view?
No
Maravilloso.... Saludos desde Mexico.
Can you use ND filters on FD lenses? I heard that they’re difficult to adapt
Yes! 55mm and they make step rings for them
Niiiiiiice :)
man maybe i buy this adapter :)
As someone who grew up shooting film, shooting manual just isn't a big deal for me. using autofocus actually feels like cheating sometimes lol
manual focus sucks but it is what it is
@@impatrickt What I mean to say is - this is a great lifehack for someone like me, that's both an amatuer and doesn't mind manual focus. I would have never thought to look at adapters for non-modern lenses! Thanks for the tip and the examples.
You’ve been avoiding the FD lenses since it became popular to put them on new cameras? You’ve been avoiding it since the 1970s?
I was born in 62
Has the Airpods Max fell from the rails yet?
not yet. one day soon I hope.
