Mack McCormick's "monster" archive of music history was recently gifted to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The massive collection has more than 590 reels of sound recordings, 165 boxes of materials, 70 cubic feet of manuscripts, as well as photographs, research notes, interviews transcripts, playbills, contracts, and much more.
One of the gems of this collection is likely the forth coming book on Robert Johnson. McCormick was the first to find Johnson's family, and collect photo's of the blues legend. The book was a collection of McCormick's research on Johnson, including interviews and pictures never seen by the public. All of this was originally going to be released in the early 70's, but it never happened.
The Smithsonian Institution will release the book in April, 2023.
“McCormick’s archive has long been of near-mythical proportions within research and music history circles, and it lives up to its promise,” John Troutman, the museum’s curator of music, shared in a statement. “This archive yields revelations about the lives of many significant early- and mid-century blues artists-from Bernice Edwards and Robert Johnson to Sam ‘Lightnin’’ Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb-due to McCormick’s dogged research methods and his hundreds of interviews with artists and their families.”
I don't know about you, but I cannot wait till this is released!
Let me know what you are thinking about this upcoming book!
Thanks, John@StillLivinTheBlues

"From until Late", better late than never...R.I.P. Robert and Thanks for the Music. 🙏
Been listening to Robert Johnson since I was 12. I'm in my mid 20s, everyday I can't stop listening to Robert Johnson. Thank you for keeping him heard after 100 years:)
Can't wait for this new picture, and book.
Had the honour and privilege of meeting Steven Johnson and his daughter last night. Steven performed and mingled with the audience. I wish I had known about this book before hand and had been able to ask him about it. What a treasure for the world of music!
There's a great documentary called "The Life and Music of Robert Jonshon" (1997) on youtube, with old bluesmen testimonials.
I’m looking forward to this book!
Me too!
Whoops! Big mistake on my part, sorry Robert. "From Four Until Late"...

This is truly exciting!! I have goosebumps from this video. Thanks for keeping the blues alive!!
Now on to pre-order the book....
Thanks for watching and for the kind words!!!
Had not heard this book was being released, just pre-ordered it! Thanks!
Great news. Thanks.
Don't understand how long rights could run, in 12 years it's going to be one centery since he recorded, winning no one penny and he seemed happy with this kind of life.
Buissness is a fatal desease.
Fabulous news!
Wow. Just wow. I had thought the Monster was lost forever. This is great news, thanks.
I once believed it was!
Right on😎
Way cool, I play his KG14, found it at a crossroads, can’t wait

Thanks for watching! I'll be second in line right behind ya!
Can you please make a video about Charley Patton? I really wish someone find a second photograph of him
I'll see what I can do about the video about Patton. :) I do have one about Lula where Patton met Son House.
This is the link to my video about Lula if you'd like to check it out. ruclips.net/video/10_tEjyNuNc/видео.html
@@StillLivinTheBlues Do you think that's Charley P. in ths picture? ruclips.net/video/PkbmVQQ0oSw/видео.html
@@LEON-de7gu Nope. From what I understand, there is only one known photo of Charley Patton, and its the one of him sitting in the chair with his Stella guitar.
Can’t wait to read this book, I’m curious though, is there any record of Robert’s last words before he died?
Some say he made a note of a deathbed repentence... There are some who really argue that his deathbed repentence was made up, but I don't know. It was common (and still is) for folks to do that when they realize they are likely to soon die. Other than that, I don't know. I do think everyone agrees tho that Robert's last 24 hours was horrible in the amount of pain and suffering he was going through. Very sad.
Huge
This Steve LaVere seems like some piece of work .....
Somebody ought to lose it. Let Robert have his story. No fakes
What is the background music heard in the video?
The group’s name is listed in the video description.
Well, it sure ain't Robert Johnson...
@@rodjones117 You think? You do know and understand how using copyrighted music works... Don't you?
@@StillLivinTheBlues Calm down - it ain't Robert Johnson is all I'm saying. What's your problem?
I bought that book on audible, but never saw any pictures! was pissed
Yeah, I also learned the hard way that Audible doesn't include pictures!
have you read Brother Robert yet? @@StillLivinTheBlues
@@Aspiring-HoboGreat book like no other when it comes to Robert I think I have them all just starting phantom today so I'm a little late for once but so far it's great Brother gives sutch personal insight I never thought we would be so lucky after so many decades it's a lucky strike indeed at 70 this old white boy still playes he guitar and still loves the country blues from the Delta cheers !
These are fantastic news but the history and the legal battles behind the research is simply very petty and kinda disrespectful towards Robert, to be honest. Also trying to sue people over original works that you didn't make yourself and shouldn't be in the right to do, just to profit from it, smells like entitlement to me. (I don't like culture vultures.) In the end, it's about Robert Johnson himself and to conclude a long-lasting legacy of mystery and music.
(Thanks for the great video)
Good history
Thank you.
Forklore. Heh heh heh . . .
lol, yeah... Some of folks, if you don't believe what they say about Robert Johnson as gospel, they will stab you with a fork. hehe
