  • In this episode of Cheap Family Travel (www.cheapfamily...), Nick, Regan, Maggie and Kate camped and danced at Garner State Park in Texas. Garner is a great family getaway with miles of trails for hiking and biking and the beautiful Frio River for cooling off. You can rent inner tubes, kayaks, and paddleboats for use on the river or you can use any of the many rope swings to beat the Texas heat. The park was named after Vice President John Garner and many of the trails and buildings were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, CCC in the late 1930's.. The park offers screened shelters, cabins and campsites and is the most visited overnight state park in Texas. Reservations are definitely recommended. The heart of the park is the combination or concession building where the nightly jukebox dance is held. Since the 1940's, people have gathered after a day on the river to dance in the pavilion and socialize. We loved Garner State Park. It is beautiful and friendly and a great place to visit.
