Easily the best chalk bag tutorial with the secure cinching! I think I'll add a zipper pocket to mine but this type of bag tutorial was just what I was looking for, thanks!

Overall this was pretty great thank you. I would call this an intermediate sew, although it is pretty straight forward there were some tricky bits with putting the binding around the zip tie. A few notes, it would be much easier with a bigger seam allowance at the top for tucking the zip tie into, should be a minimum 1/2 inch. I didn't use a plastic straw as i didn't want anything hard in it incase she falls on it, so I made a "straw" out of leather. I put a few stitches down the seam, below the stretch fabric, once I had the liner in to ensure the paracord can't slip under as other commenters had said it is prone to do. Don't use superglue on the zip tie, i tried it made them brittle and they snapped. I used carpet binding for the top binding, as I couldn't get the nylon binding that I beleive was used, i hope it is durable enough. I doubled up my stretch terry, and wish I had used a single layer as it is stiff to close, but I'm sure it will ease up given time.
excellent video! Best directions out there and I've looked hard. Made one for my daughter. the only change I made is to use boning (found at Joann's by the yard) which is like a zip tie covered with fabric binding. This eliminated the need to join 2 pieces and you are able to use a machine to sew it in on the edge.
I didn't realize that Joanns had boning. That is definitely easier.

its a great design. i think you needed to show the step where you add the cabel tie circle. i used the rigid tape that often comes round parcels
I've just ended doing mine based on your project and it turned out great. I've added a pocket for my phone and brush handles. In mine the paracord goes lower than I wanted but I hadn't figured out any decent way to secure it in one place in terms of height. Any way thank for an amazing tutorial ;)

Thanks for the great tutorial! It was very easy to follow and turned out great! I used string rather than a paracord for the draw string because my paracord was too large for the straw which worked out fine

Can you you explain the straw bit for me? I'm half shocked I actually have all of these and will be able to follow but I don't really understand what role the straw plays..
It just makes it so that the bunching is in the middle of the bag instead of on the side of the bag when the cord is tightened

@@NK-bz9wb Just make sure your straw is wide enough for the cording to slide through easily. If it is tight, it can be really annoying.

Thank you for the video! I tried to make my own bag with your instructions,but I have problem with the paracord. How do you attached it? I put it between the mesh and the main fabric,but when I finished the bag, pulled the mesh out and my paracord was missing.

And do you really need the piece of straw.

Great video! Only problem I had was the straw coming through the hole, so I used 2 holes to prevent that
You must have used a larger grommet than I did. I can see that being a problem for sure!

Hi Christian, love this tutorial! My daughter has just started climbing so I’m going to give this tutorial a go. What kind of straw did you use because I’ve had a look at some drinking straws and they don’t seem wide enough or strong enough?
I used a permanent straw because it was thicker and wider. It just needs to be a tube that is large enough for the chord to slide through easily.

Did anyone try this chalk bag? I did but I am finding that the string fall right down from the back
When sewing the stretch knit to the lining and outer fabric, did you use a zig-zag stitch or just a regular stitch?
The stretch fabric is being applied to the outer shell of the chalk bag which does not stretch at all. Because of that, a straight stitch, works just fine. You only use a zigzag or stretch stitch if the seam is going to be stretching a lot.
Thanks a bunch for the tutorial. Unfortunately I used a slightly longer piece of paracord (24"), which led to it slipping out under the bottom of the inner liner, thus losing the tube in there forever :(
Another issue I ran into was sewing the inner liner to the outer. Inevitably those two circles are going to have a slightly different circumference, so how do I sew them together without having to fold it (whichever circle is larger) over at the end?
You can slip the paracord over the bottom the same way it came out. It will be a little difficult but it is completely possible. Just loose the straw when you do it because that makes it really hard.
You can stop overlap of the inner and outer ring by pinning it first before you sew. That will keep everything in place without stretch and causing overlap. I hope that helps!

say i wanted to use the head of a plush toy as my bag, do you think it would be possible to somehow make it work? the part im a little worried about is how would i be able to keep the shape of the head after removing some of the stuffing!
It sounds like the look you are going for is similar to a company called 8B+ chalk bags. It should work as long as the shape is closer to a cylinder instead of a circle. Also, if you chop a stuffed animal head off and try to use the neck as the opening, it will be upside down. If you want to do it, it definitely is possible. It just takes a little problem solving.
Hello, I'm abit confused at 3:41, did you stitch the stretch knit fabric to the fur and to the marvel with the cord inside to make a tunnel or just the fur to the stretch to the marvel?
You can look at the comment by Hannah M. She has a similar question which I answer. Just consider the stretch fabric as an extension of the top of the fur fabric. The marvel fabric makes one bucket and the fur and stretch together make a second bucket. The chord goes between the buckets and the top of the buckets are sewn together.
(This means that the chord could sinch around the fur part if you wanted it to but it moves up and sinches around the stretch fabric because it gives in a lot easier.) Let me know if that makes sense or not.
Can I use fusible interfacing instead of duck canvas? I know duck canvas is sturdy and used for outdoor furniture, but I only have fusible interfacing right now.

It is commonly difficult to sew a cylinder to a circle perfectly. If you are struggling with this, pins help a lot.
For the outside decorative fabric
Rectangle piece length should be cut at 15.75"
Circle piece diameter should be 5.5"

Completely unfamiliar with this product but making them for my kids. I live in Ecuador and can't get non-disposable straws. What happens if I eliminate them? Also, is the binding strip how you are finishing the outer and inner layers since you don't sew them RST? Or are you actually sewing the stretch knit to the outer and then adding the binding for aesthetics?
If you eliminate the straws, then the stretch will be sinched more to the side than in the middle. It should be able to work though. The binding strip is to cover the raw ends and to encase the zip tie that provides structure. Good luck!
What does adding the straw to the paracord do for the finished product?
It allows the chord to cinch the bag closed at the center instead of at the side

hi sorry to keep asking questions but im at the part where you sew the parachord in and im just uterly confused... so since the cord is loose between the two fabrics do i sew above and below the cord?
You're fine/ The parachord just needs to be enclosed in the bag. This means you just sew above it. While you are sewing the black fabric to the outer fabric, the parachord is wraped around that white lining. After the sewing is done, it is easy to move up a little into place to tighten the black fabric.
Hi, What type of binding did you use? Did you machine sew or hand stich? Iam having a tough time making it work on the machine.
I used a Sears Kenmore sewing machine with a normal needle for most parts. I did secure the zip ties in place by hand before I used a machine to bind them in. I used a traditional binding tape.

Where did you get the thing used a as a drawstring and what is the exact name for it?
It is called parachord. You can find it almost anywhere including Walmart. It is in the camping and rope sections

Yes, so the paracord should be between the outside fabric of the bag and the inside lining of the bag
And the stretch fabric connects the outside fabric of the bag to the inside lining of the bag
Instead of sewing the zip ties together could I super glue them?
Yea if the super glue adheres to the type of plastic the zip ties are made out of. Also, it might come apart later on. I just chose a way that wouldn't come undone.

How do you quilt fabric together?
See through both pieces of fabric like they are just one piece. The stitching then makes it like they are one piece. I just sewed in a pattern so the “quilting” looks better
what is a chalk bag
Rock climbers/gymnasts use it to keep chalk powder in. The powder helps keep their hands dry.

I used a machine to sew the binding on which can be difficult. Try something that is 3/4” to 1” wide. It is also easier to sew one side of the binding on and then the other side.
