I just harvested a Malawi pumpkin at 15kg. I saved 563 seeds from that pumpkin. Just think of this fact: it grew from ONE seed and it spawned 563 seeds. I sowed 10 foot long beans; all ten sprouted. We ate beans and I harvested 850+ seeds from those ten stalks. My one friend counted his corn seeds grown in his back yard and it yielded about 60'000 seeds. That is nature in your back yard! Go for it! Thank you for this video and for you working tirelessly to promote even just one plant on your kitchen window sill. I am living in Sandton, South Africa.

I started saving seeds from my school days, because we had a chapter in our hindi textbook, where a granny keeps throwing seeds from the train window, when asked what was she trying to do... she says, I have sowed the flower seeds everywhere. Now when I return after few months, these track sides will be full of beautiful flowers and bees... That was the most beautiful lesson I ever learnt. So happy to see this video... :D

Apart from the sinister aspects of this, when you save your own seed, you know it is fresh (so will germinate much more reliably) and is also adapted to your little microclimate. Plus it's very satisfying and fun to do.

Of course I was thinking of save seeds for next year but after watching your video my plan got a different touch to it. Wonderful video! Wonderful lesson. I believe this world, and all the precious plants were a gift to us from the first garden and should be respected, cared for and preserved with the same love by which they were created. We must do our part as caretakers, not as simply takers. Bless you for teaching!

I have been keeping seeds from the fruit I have bought in normal stores. There are from from organic companies in USA, but I'm not sure if it is a good idea to use them. I know that sometimes the organic products from companies are not totally organic, that's why I have not planted these seeds yet. Thank you in advance!

You’re pretty safe saving seeds from open pollinated peppers, tomatoes, beans, herbs… Pumpkins, cucumbers, squash and the like do easily cross pollinate with wild gourds and each other. You may need to hand pollinate those to make sure you get some good seeds that don’t give you something bitter and awful. Don’t be deterred though, it’s a simple extra step.

how do you feel about keeping the seeds stored in their shells? So, keeping the dry pods, dry chillies or dry flowers stored in glass containers.

I have a question, say you bought a packet of seeds then planted them and then saved the seeds it made. What if you find out that those original seeds you planted were GMO then would your new seeds be contaminated?
Just wondering how I can start if the seeds around me have been modified (idk how to tell if they have or not yet)
    thanks
