I was at Cottons around the corner and the wind was more favorable there, early offshore, then turned a little SSE mid morning making the right better than normal, very consistent when sets came in. The left was very long, a little mushy with a few lips to get under early am...
Did you find the 91X radio station out of San Diego? Summer swell of 1986 looked like this and a little bigger but was parked on the USMC side of the road all by myself.
I could be easily a contender in appreciating surfing... I sound arrogant, i know. But it’s true, I could watch this sport that i suck ass at but appreciate those that have the skills. God damn that looks like so much fun..
This was probably not even July 4. Looks more like the 3rd or 5th. If it was the 4th you arrived after the biggest sets and before Slater showed up and annihilated the place. Can't always expect to capture the best surfing in the worst conditions.

This video doesn't do Lower's justice for the waves that were coming in that day. Also the video needs to be panned out so you can see the shoulder and the playing field!!! Where are all the lefts? Lowers was pumping with much better surfing in the early morning. Good try.

Ahhh, I’m old... I remember surfing Trestles back in the early 1980’s. It was still possible to get it with minimal doods out👍🏽
As was the 70's. Lowers used to have about half the crowd of Uppers and Church, you just had to walk a little further.
