  • My review of my new 1978 fender precision bass.
    My linktree: bit.ly/basslinks
I have a new bass! A few weeks ago I bought a 1978 Fender P Bass (short for Fender Precision Bass) from a bass player here in London called Dave Swift.
If you don't know much about Dave, he's one of the top session bassists here in London. His main gig is with Jools Holland who's famous Rhythm & Blues pianist and host of the wonderful TV show Later With Jools Holland.
I'd been looking for a bass that sounds authentically "old" for quite some time. As much as I love my Sadowsky there's no getting away from the fact that it sounds like a modern bass.
I'd also been flirting with the idea of getting a bass made that had no EQ. I love using my hands to get as many different tones as I can so when you couple a P Bass' minimal tone options (tone and volume dials. NOTHING else) with the fact this particular bass was made in 1978 it was a no-brainer.
After visiting Dave at his studio and collecting the bass I took it home, used it on a gig and filmed this short demo.
All the music you hear in this video demo has been made using the new P Bass and I hope you'll agree when I say it's been one of the best investments I've made!

Nice bass. The color is mocha. I have a 1976 fender catalogue that states the color as mocha. I just bought a 1975 mocha p bass with rosewood fingerboard.

Beautiful plus it looks better without the extra hardware. Good you took them off. All you need is an Elvis Costello Jazzmaster which Fender made years ago and it will match the looks of your bass.

Nice to share in the joy of your new axe! Love what you said about using your hands. I also started active and then fell in love with the P. Your hands should always be busy, playing, muting, thumping, searching for the tone. "It's in your fingers man!"

I have the same color bass but it’s a Squire version and it sounds very similar. Of course if won’t have the same cool vibe but sound wise, it’s similar

CONGRATS WITH YOUR NEW /OLD BASS ,IN THIRTY YEAR I,VE HAD OVER 43 BASSES ,FOUR,S FIVE,S AND ALSO ONE SIX STRING BASS ,I,VE HAD TWO 78 P-BASSES ,THE FIRST ONE WAS A BEAUTIFUL ONE A RARE PURPLE COLOR ,BUT TO MY DISMAY I LISTENED TO MY COUSIN AND ADDED EXTRA PICK-UPS LIKE A STEWARD HAMM SETUP AND DOWN THE TUBES THAT BASS WENT ,AND I GOT RID OF IT . BUT YEARS LATER FOUND ANOTHER ONE BLACK WITH A MAPLE NECK AND I HOLD ON TO THIS ONE LIKE THE GIRL THAT GOT AWAY.

That bass is mine now! I'm 918V's son. I inherited it after he died. It's the best-sounding P Bass I've ever heard. It sounds exactly like the one in the video. It's so cool finding a comment from my dad here. RIP

I’ve been looking at one with a maple fretboard at a local shop near me and haven’t had a chance to play it, supposedly it’s a ‘78 and the brown has really grown on me. Hopefully I’ll have enough for it before some other lucky player gets it!

OnlineBass Guitar Sorry for the late reply but they do! There’s pics of the neck pocket and I asked the seller for pictures of papers and they gladly showed me, the shop is called Chicago Music Exchange, which is very respected for their vintage stock.

5.7 kg = 12.6 lb. Wow, that is one heavy boulder. It is an absolutely stunning bass in both sound and appearance.
Do you have any dead spots on the neck?

Non offence but that pbass sound bad
Needs truss rod or saddles adjustments and the tone is flat as
I own a 55, a 68 and a 78 myself and I can guarantee you that bass has no mojo
