Well, perhaps if you live in a country where citizens' privacy rights are at least somewhat secured, you can say that there is no difference between ISP and VPN provider. As a person who works in the IT field 90% of people dont even need a VPN anyway, unless youre geoblocked or trying to torrent. And maybe for a few other reasons. Most VPN ads heavily exaggerate the threats of everyday use of computers to scare you into buying their product. The average joe with basic knowledge of how to not get clapped by malicious people online doesnt need a vpn at all for general computer usage. VPN companys prey on scaring you into their arms.
I think people have forgotten what a VPN provider is suppose to provide... It's not privacy perse, but a virtual network... Some providers don't even have exit points in their networks, so you need to set it up yourself.

the only reason to buy mozilla vpn is to support mozilla and that's really my main reason for using the vpn personally even if I lose out on some features
Lot's of people talking about wanting to support Mozilla by buying this VPN. Y'all know you can support them with donations right? You don't have to buy this VPN.
Also, mozilla's leadership stance on internet freedoms is absolutely the worst. In the case of a browser, the free source nature mitigates most of the concerns, but with VPN there is no guarantee they will not decide to log your activity, ban you from visiting certain websites, or do something with your data. You shouldn't trust this company anymore.
As soon as your client software connects to an external server, then "open source" is meaningless. You can't prove what code is being run on that server. That is why you should avoid the 'Mozilla account', or any of their 'cloud' features.
