    This has to be one of the best-looking Allosaurus models that I've seen in a dinosaur documentary. I love the spotted markings, and how they turn into marbled stripes as they reach the Allosaurus' head. I also like the warmer colors on it's head/crests, and how they become more muted and earthy when they reach the main body. Even the Stegosaurus' models look great.

    Given the extensive air sacs of theropods I’m not really sure that Camptosaurus can outlast its predator. Not saying it was defenceless, but still.

      I think there's an interesting paper regarding Ornithopods breeding aparatus in the works.
      Aside from that, generally speaking the position of the fourth trochanter in the femur gives important clues about how the caudofemoralis muscle attached and the subsequent effect on animal locomotion. Generally large Theropods fourth trochanter was close to the femur head, which would allow for a quicker retraction of the muscle while Ornithopods had more distal placed trochanters which would result in a slower retraction but a more energy efficient motion. I.E. the condition in Theropods is consistent with a fast acceleration while that of Ornithopods was better suited for covering large distance more efficiently.

      Well all dinosaurs had this airsack system, but allosaurus particularly is a lightly built therepod so I'd suspect it'd have the edge in endurance.

    • @rileyernst9086
      @rileyernst9086 2 года назад +1

      @Allosaurus Enjoyer well yeah, most therapods were much bulkier than commonly depicted, but a when compared to something like a torvosaurus of similar length they are quite pretty sporty and light weight.

    • @rileyernst9086
      @rileyernst9086 2 года назад

      @Allosaurus Enjoyer well megalasaurus itself was also more robust than allosaurus, thus seemingly this might have been a trend in megalasaurs and metriacanthosaurs seemed to be a little bit more robust as well. So I'd take back my former comment imlying it was particularly lightly built, but its lighter than some of the previous dynasties relative to body size. It seems to match ceratosaurus for weight relative to size.

    Allosaurus was not an ambush hunter. The much heavier megalasaurs did this and were more suited to it, they have big heavy almost tyrannosaurian skulls ideal for crushing their prey. Allosaurus is much lighter built, and its skull is really cool it has high arches and large hollows the arches are really good at absorbing stress whilst maintaining a lightweight design. Its teeth are designed to cut rather than crush, like a shark's teeth. An individual allosaurus generally averages half the weight as a similar sized Torvosaurus.

    • @rileyernst9086
      @rileyernst9086 2 года назад +3

      That being said it like anything else is going to ambush when it has the chance. Also i do not like the 'hatchet attack' idea. I think a conventional bite, followed by a good old whole body reefing to get those saw teeth cutting deep.

    • @andrewcrowley6331
      @andrewcrowley6331 2 года назад +3

      @@rileyernst9086 not to mention there’s evidence of Allosaurus and related species being pack hunters, possibly working together to take down large sauropods since many bite marks have been found on their bones. Megalosaurs like Torvosaurus probably occupied a different niche like you said.

    • @rileyernst9086
      @rileyernst9086 2 года назад +2

      @@andrewcrowley6331 i think allosaurus out of all the large therapod species of the morrison is the most likely to be social. Or is most likely to be the most social of the big therapods of the morrison. Social animals may hunt as groups or as individuals depending on target prey and avaliability of prey(wolves hunt in packs to bring down large prey when smaller prey is scarce, and especially when its under snow despite being intensly social and great pack hunters). We find large numbers of allosaurus together, as we have found large numbers of sauropods and ceratopsians together. Crocodilians (which allosaurus's brain has been compared to) such as specticaled caimans, freshwater crocs and nile crocs demonstrate group hunting (corralling fish and even coordinating ambushes)and scavenging behaviour (ganging up and driving other animals like packs of hyenas from carcasses). I believe social behaviour including group hunting, or pack hunting(the difference between the 2 is never clear cut) evolves when animals are faced with harsh conditions and large seasonal variability. Do i think they were like wolves? Hell no, wolves are really really sophisticated hunters, and for good reason(they only have their bite, a lone wolf ain't bringing down a doe let alone a stag if she doesn't turn tail.) But lions basically as a pack or pride single out a prey target and use their numbers to attack it as individuals. Like nile crocs or grade 3ers playing soccer.) Now allosaurus was probably the most successful therapod of the morrison. It wasn't the biggest it wasn't the heaviest. It was outclassed by the likes of saurophaginax and torvosaurus. But unlike them it thrived in semi arid and highly seasonal parts of the morrison.. To me there is a good case for sociabilty in allosaurus. The same goes for most of the carcharodontosaurs or even other large therapods but it depends on habitat and the enviromental factors.( I also think Trex probably did not need to hunt in groups. Especially at Hell Creek(more to the north or south I'll concede, yes perhaps)as the enviroment seemed quite gentle and reliable throughout the year)If they are living in a nice lush enviroment with plenty of prey it is less likely they will be sociable.

    • @rileyernst9086
      @rileyernst9086 2 года назад

      @Allosaurus Enjoyer interesting theory, i don't buy it, i don't think that there was too many large bodied therapods for them to be contemporary. I mean tendaguru beds sorta beats the Morrison for that too. But I'll remind you that before the recent end pleisteocene extinction modern animals lived alongside a massive array of now extinct megafauna, in north america alone there was like another 5 species of large bodied carnivore. Diversity has not recovered and the modern day might be more exception than norm. Even Africa and india are missing their scimitar toothed cats and silvatheriuim.

    • @rileyernst9086
      @rileyernst9086 2 года назад +1

      @Allosaurus Enjoyer interesting theory based on scant remains. The waters are also muddied by Epantrius amplexus, which can be considered synonymous with Allo but never saurophaginax but is estimated to be of similar size.
      My guess would be because saurophaginax has some pretty developed caudal chevrons, whilst epantrius has pretty standard allo ones.
