The two parts from the Live at Pompeii set known as a Saucerful of Secrets is amazing. The first part is pure chaos then it transforms into this completely solemn constructed masterpiece.

This is the last part of "Saucerful of Secrets", you should watch the whole piece to enjoy this last part when everything comes to a calm after a cahotic first part (which is so cool).

This was actually originally called a saucer full of secrets on the live at Pompeii in 1971 movie Floyd did. It's more a two-part song where on the first half all four musicians are playing eclectically and crazily on their instruments pounding the keys and playing really weird notes, they then slow down and start playing how this song started. The overhead of the city covered in ashes is from the newer redone version of Pink Floyd live at Pompeii on the DVD. The city was covered in Ash in 1944 right in the middle of world War II. What a time to erupt!!!!!

This part of the 4-part tune is the best in my opinion. The first 3 are dissonant, disconcerting, a bit eerie. Similar to the effect that Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun has. The take away from it is that if you listen to how the sound of Pink Floyd evolved, this is the section of the band's career where they are kind of flailing about figuring out the sound and direction of the future. I find it astonishing because all of the sounds in this era's music is self created. Very little technological aids available to create those sounds at that time. The band had to create those sounds through ingenuity and creativity. Nowadays, those sounds are a program in musical software and created by pushing a button.

The keyboard was an organ, most likely a hammond organ with an amplified Leslie fan speaker box. Both which were originally created as a smaller option for small churches, it became a staple instrument in rock bands during the sixties and seventies.

Some of the most incredible images of Pompeii and Vesuvius.
The organ is a Hammond which was originally designed as an electronic replacement for massive church pipe organs but adopted by many rock bands in the 70s. John Lord of Deep Purple was another great user of the Hammond organ. I've played one myself in a studio and it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
It was usually coupled with a 'Leslie' speaker which had a spinning baffle and horn speakers which can be operated by a foot switch to create vibrato giving it a unique and classic rock sound.
I've been a musician for over 45 years, so if you have any questions let me know and if I know the answer I'll explain it.
    Love you guys.
    ✌️❤️🇬🇧

the double album ummagumma (one studio disc, one live disc) has a great live performance of this with a choir doing the vocal part at the end,but i do prefer this one with just david singing. richard's organ at the beginning starts the tears flowing every time i hear it. the chord progression is so beautiful, and yes, as many have said, i would love to have this playing as i leave this world.

Who suggested this? This is only the 4th+final 3:19 part of the best 11:57 song A Saucerful Of Secret. What a shame!
This masterpiece was a live standard for a long time, but it only makes sense when you listen to these 12 minutes, the first and only song that Gilmour helped compose (he only joined during the recordings). Have a good start to the week!!!.

Its a pity that the song is cut out of context, Floyd doesnt conpose for pleasing the ears, they create meaningful spaces where the themes of life and existence happens to unfold in a touching teaching way... Surrender to that what is without judging that it isnt all harmonic. Maybe next time with the narrow way from Ummagumma?

    • @Tbevie50
      @Tbevie50 10 месяцев назад

I respect your opinion but I personally disagree. It’s music at the end of the day. If it wasn’t pleasing on the ears, no one would listen long enough to discover the depth and meaning.

The new mixes they released are so bad. I don't know how they intend them to be listened. The drums are way too loud and the vocals are drowned in the noise. This happens throughout all the songs on the Pompeii rerelease.
