    GW wrote themselves in to a corner. Nids are the most munchkin faction in lore if not the table top game. Ridiculously so at times. Then they have to give the opposition plot armor and just survive to a pyrrhic victory that never seems to do any permanent harm.

    Ah yes! Jormungandr. My homebrew hive fleet, Nidhoggr, is somewhat based on the more subtle and clever approach. Norse Mythology's Nidhoggr is the dragon that gnaws at the roots of the World Tree. As such, Nidhoggr has a mahogany root like "flesh" and a mossy bark carapace. They also heavily rely on Genestealer Cults known as the Root Eaters to infiltrate and soften up entire subsectors before invasions.

    Their quest is not so much nutrition.
    It is FAR more about survival, about EVOLUTION.
    Which is why fleets often erase one another, in a strive to become stronger, more durable, more effective.
    THAT is the main goal.
    Not mere nutrition.

    • @Xogroroth666
      @Xogroroth666 3 месяца назад

      I never understood the numbers on the Imperium's side.
      A fleet needed to erase Jormungandr would've taken thousands of ships.
      Literally, seeing the immense vastness, and thus numbers, of Jormungandr.
      In the entirety that is WH40K, considering all the Exterminatus events, the Chaos invasions, you name it ... if we consider numbers ... humans would be buh-0bye!!!
      It is mathematically impossible!!!
      In that SAME entirety, losses are NEVER ACCOUNTED into the stories.
      Not ONCE!!!
      And this is ruining all for me, as even the simplest base of a "realistic" setting ... is inexistent.
      More so, Jormungandr would not be defeated.
      Their intellect is too immense.
      DEAD MSIMPLE fact.
      This is just cheating.

      I mean the silent king’s entire lore revolves around stopping the tyranids. I know they haven’t had any big interactions necessarily, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a threat, just that they aren’t as intrenched in the galaxy as some of the bigger villains. GW reflects sales in the lore, if nids became the top seller villain, they’d get the same lore treatment chaos got in 8th or necrons in 9th. So far they’re selling well with the leviathan stuff, so I guess we’ll see

    Question about tyrranids. Does the biomass they consume need to be alive for them to increase their number or can they consume corpses and stuff like dead plants? Just wondering on how the hives even get destroyed at all because they might be able to even eat their own dead corpses and other dead things to grow the hive.

    • @Scholarslore
      @Scholarslore  6 месяцев назад

      They can consume anything biological, no matter if its living or dead. So animals, plants, even the soil, and oceans will be sucked up. The end state of an invasion would be that the planet gets left as a completely barren rock, devoid of any traces that biological life ever existed there, so they really scoop up anything they can. I always imagine it as them consuming anything which could harbour any form of nutrition to them, so even bones, or shells will be digested down just to get at those constituent calories.

    This is the kind of thing that makes me wonder why the Giant Space Bugs of Death don't just win more often. Way too many years ago, Fantasy Flight Games had the GW rights to make RPG books, and one line was Deathwatch, where the players would play kill teams stomping around in the Jericho Reach. This typical Imperium edge territory had once been the Jericho Sector, but events caused the Imperium to totally lose touch with it, and then they didn't go do anything about that for centuries. Eventually, some Lord Militant launched a Crusade through a discovered warp gate, and the battle was on. When the Crusade arrived, they found a space seemingly bereft of Imperial worlds; even ones in rebellion, and instead discovered that a massive swathe was controlled by Chaos, while the region to the right of that was being suckered in by the Tau, the region to the left was being swarmed by a Hive Fleet, and some Orks, DEldar, and the like were spotted around, just trying to capitalize, in no meaningful way, where they could. Now, the Imperial forces had to dplit in three, and each separately engage a salient. By the time the game starts, I believe its been like 30 years since the crusade started, and the Nids don't have much other opposition in their salient. They aren't fighting the Imperium AND the Tau, or some Waagh! of Orks, and the Imperium can't even focus on them, because the insidious Tau are enlisting the humans that would otherwise populate the region to work with the Greater Good, and Chaos will taint worlds beyond reclamation, or summon more Daemons, if not countered. The Tyranids are more slow, and predictable, so it feels like they are almost being seen as the least critical threat, that the Crusade forces can just get over to later, even though theyll be more depleted by then, even if they could actually defeat Chaos, for once, or the Tau. So, while some forces certainly are monitoring, and engaging, the Hive Fleet, its basically had 30 years to methodically goble up worlds, and recoup/gain forces, and only one other faction is really fighting them, and not exclusively. Considering it doesn't necessarily seem to take a Hive Fleet that long to strip a world, im really actually a bit surprised that that third of the Reach still has worlds, and stuff for the Crusade forces to fight for, apart from typical 40k writing.😊

    Seems like Jormungandr just got lucky at reaching unpopulated sectors of the galaxy. Their strategy is just terrible. To spread out as Tyrannids means losing the main thing why they are so dangerous to begin with. Launching asteroids is pointless as it only works on minor settlements without defenses in orbit or anti-orbital defenses on the ground. Burrowing underground for just 3 days? They just dug themselves a little hole to hide. After failed invasion retreating to underground chambers to breed in? With what biomass? Exists would only get blocked by army units and tyranids would get trapped within with no means to replenish or to sustain themselves. Jormungandr tactics and strategies are just as terrible as its given name.
    How they say. You do not need to be most attractive, hardest working, smartest or most rich guy in the room. You just need to get really lucky in life. This stands true and for Jormungandr.

      They still won't be able to knock down all the stones. Splitting their forces is very smart on their part, look at the Behemoth hive fleet, it moved in one wedge, was defeated in one system and died. If you split up, of course you won’t be able to take the fortified worlds, but hundreds of other weak worlds will fall easily, and the enemy will not be able to concentrate their troops for defense. Don't underestimate their digging ability; one group of them can easily dig you a subway for several cities in a day. Biomass is very easy to find, especially if there are wild life forms on the planet; on hive worlds you can simply empty the lower floors of cities of people and they won’t even notice it right away, especially right after the battle.

    • @REgamesplayer
      @REgamesplayer 6 месяцев назад

      @@zergrush_9704 Tyranids manage to overwhelm unprepared worlds precisely because they strike in such great number. For example, initial encounters with Behemoth ended so poorly for the defenders, because they literally ran out of ammunition in most cases. If Tyranids would not had overwhelming numbers, defenders would had been able to replenish their supplies and stall the invasion. Jormungandr tactics were only so successful due to luck. They struck at uncollonised space. When Imperium had mustered adequate response, they were far easily defeated than equivalent hive fleets.
      Digging operations do not happen so rapidly. Just go and watch how we dig tunnels in real life. And that is with advanced and extremely expensive equipment. Bad authors make digging a magical tool which counters everything. I cringe at that, because in reality digging is a common tactic of war. We did it since ancient times. In W40k, mining and counter-mining operations in siege warfare is commonplace. However, bad Black Library writers always pull this card in an effort to make Tyranids appear unstoppable.

      @@REgamesplayer this isn't the only hive fleet that uses this strategy, hive fleet Kraken was specified on that stuff, hive fleet leviathan also uses some sort of this strategy, because it's not how you think it is, even divided tyranid forces have great number advantage over any imperial world, just 1-2 big hive ships can outnumber average hive world and they will run out of amo, great example is space marine 2 trailers, where it's only a couple of tyranid bio vessels on orbit and guard is already heavily outnumbered by them, when we talk about concentrated tyranid forces - we talk about thousands of ships like this on orbit, now imagine this hell, Macragge and Baal faced it, but tyranids still lost and what now? They did't get anything from it, they just lost big chunks of their fleets and that's it.
      Warhammer has many magical bullshit, it's not a surprise. If I say that tyranids can dig big tunnels in minutes - then just face reality, it's written how it's written, they literally swim under ground by moving their shells and mussels in specific frequency and use their psychic abilities to turn the walls inside their tunnels into some sort of glass, in order to prevent collapse, what are we even talking about?

    • @REgamesplayer

      @@zergrush_9704 Hive Fleet Kraken used genestealers beacons for guidance. It concentrated its forces on Ichar IV where it was defeated.
      Hive fleet leviathan was concentrated in Octarius War. Kryptman brilliantly took out two massive threats at once.
      Tyranids do not possess the quality of ordinary races. Thus they will always need more numbers than force they are attacking. Since they are always attacking entrenched defenders, they need dozens of times more soldiers than there are defenders.
      If it is a plot mcguffin, it doesn't mean that it is good. Bad writing is bad writing and lets not make excuses for lazy writers. If you want to see how proper story is written in regards to underground wars, look for conflict on Vraks. Two prominent youtubers heavily over-exposed Kriegsmen to the masses, but they do have excellent videos on it.

    I wonder what the current oldest Tyranid forum is among our galaxy. A single bio forum or collection of cells that have managed to avoid being recycled into basic soup for the fleets. They can still change their forum through evolution, but the point is they have never been completely dissolved to go back into the general biomass pool, they continue to have their original cells + newly acquired ones and or modifications made. My best guess is probs one of the various massive Bio ships that carry the invasions. Everything that goes down planet side ultimately becomes bio soup again to be drank back up into the orbital mouths of these ships, so with that in mind, I'd figure they would be the oldest and among the physically largest of organisms

      I'm also curious if the tyranids somewhere keep a sample group of bioforms, a genetic fallback point per say. Kinda like when the Zerg in Starcraft comes across a planet that has the original proto Zerg forums. Is there a fleet or collection of of Tyranids that are of what ever design and shape they had before encountering our galaxy and adapting, and how those forums look
