I stopped getting Indian gifts from India to give to people. Moral of the story - adapt to the people of that land and not expect it to be like India. Also, not notvtry to convert other lands to India just like we do not want India to mimic others. Even within the US, Texasans tell migrating Californians to leave California culture back in California before they move. This is universal everywhere.
People especially Caucasians often have allergies that forbid them from having certain foods. Indians in general tend to overlook this fact and feel bad when the sweets they offer are declined. I was aware of this fact and when one of my white friends invited me to her place for dinner, I asked her if she or her family members had any allergies and got sweets (according to the allergen info provided) to reciprocate their gesture, which included kaju katli as well. Sometimes it is best to offer sweets in packaging that has ingredients/calorie info written on it (e.g.Haldirams) and make them an open offer rather than going around and offering like we normally do.
Omg yes!! Indians sweets are too sweet for other cultures. Indians used to Toot Pado.On kaju katli but I found it untouched many times with people from other cultures. Nothing wrong. It made me realise all that you wrote up. :)
For people whonare lower middle and poor class like me. Getting the opportunity to work in usa will settle ourselves towards retirement. just work 5-10 years in usa only spend on necessities and literally comeback to india and retire around 35-40 and you are settled for retirement. Then you can do any job you want, you don't even need a salary as your investments can buy anything you eant including affordable bmws
Very good insights. One key insight from my experience is if you go to the US, better embrace the culture wholeheartedly and you may experience either the best of both cultures or the worst. Whatever it is, you learn from the experience and hope to give back. Also, these days it's the same everywhere with internet connectivity. So that is one thing NRIs need to be cognizant about what really internally makes them happy.

Why sis? I know you're regretting but these are not easy to get. Do you know the attitude some NRIs giving us when 1. When you ask to join them for a Baseball or Football game. 2. When you ask them to change their plans to join you for a party (birthday or something else). 3. When you ask them to join you to do trendsetting fashion shopping. 4. When you want to date someone for anything other than marriage. I had to go out and enjoy all these with my Asian friends instead because my NRI friends turned me down.
Surprised about your regret 1. I am currently in USA and have been here for 30 years. The first thing that I did when I got here was shed my Indian identity or dilute it as much as possible. I took more interest in American culture, their holidays, sports to somewhat, definitely their movies and in general everything that would bring me closer to America. Of course I got rid of my indian English and even the way we pronounce certain words eg. schedule etc. So yes you should always be a Roman in rome. I am noticing the new Indian immigrants do not try to assimilate and I have often given them hints that they are doing it wrong but they dont care :) I have never had issues because i just adapted. Regret 4 - I faced this too and I convinced myself that you only need yourself to be happy and led my life that way until i met my wife. Even now i am just comfortable being myself and just going solo. The one way I convinced myself was that you come to this world alone and you are going to leave alone so why worry about all these people. Even now I have only one good friend, rest of them i just treat them as acquaintances. Who cares :)

Many nri's are struggling with bad relationships, isolation, marriages and divorces. No one talks about this and actually this topic is so important to be discussed. You briefly touched upon it in this video. Can you please make a detailed video what causes break up between NRI couples in a foreign country and how it can be avoided. YOU PROBABLY CAN SAVE MANY MARRIAGES FROM BREAKING

Her tips would be helpful for any NRI permanently living in the US. Be more open to the culture here vs living in your little segregated Indian enclaves. Your insularity will surely not prevent your kids from assimilation and marrying a non-Indian as adults. And definitely refine your dress sense. East Asians could be a good role model to NRI's on how to learn how to dress better. Kurtis, jeans and sneakers do not go together in the work setting. And Silicone Valley is not the center of the universe! NYC is just as competitive if not worse!
One more mistake NRIs should not do is coming back to India , please settle there and work for US economy and growth. you have made your choice. Please get Green card and settle there only. We really don't need NRIs who come back on vacation, purchase few properties and go.back. it is increasing real estate prices so badly. Indians staying here are not able to buy homes and offices.

The builder himself told us that NRIs are ready to give 30-40% more money to buy or even for reselling they are ready to buy for premium price. So he is happy to increase price. Don't think you are understanding the disparity we have and how middle class is struggling here.
The main problem I have is them bringing back the degenerate culture. If you come back to India then drop your American culture in America. Basically just what she said about NRIs to do in America but reverse.
I think we tend to think that the US is English speaking and therefore as English speaking Indians we dont need to adapt too much and we continue to speak Indian english and think in Indian ways, since English is an Indian language as well. If you are forced to learn a foreign language then your brain is forced into that cultural mould and you learn the nuances of the culture, like you would say in France or Taiwan
