Nothing wrong with painting from photo ref - the problem for is that I’m rarely excited by it. Painting from life on the other hand is an experience of vitality and sometimes profound and nearly always intriguing. Whatever the inspiration, be it photo or life study, the result can be good or bad art depending on the artist’s skill.

Painting from a photo reference is not a bad thing but this is how you improve in art. You have to begin there first. Then, you copy works by other artists to learn to make new arts. Once you are on that road, you can start making good artworks. People cannot become good artists unless they use references first, and then use these references to train themselves to improve.

i agree, but i dont think he meant it as reference x no reference, but as painting from a photo x painting from life

@@MissMariana10 Correct. First you start painting from reference and then once you are well trained enough you can start using your imagination to improve.

@@Yatukih_001 all the painters use reference in a way or another, also the most famous painters around . it's a false belief that painters/artists, even the greatest paint "from their imagination" alone. Is not true 99% of the time

Hi Nicolas! Absolutely ADORE your channel. Quick question: I have been painting for several decades just by "eyeballing" my reference. Recently, I started using a grid, as it allows me to produce images much more quickly and accurately (I am an art instructor and often pressed for time). What are your feelings on the "grid method"--is it "cheating"? Is it a method that will effect my observational skills negatively? Thank you!

Interesting question would love an answer. Personnaly I d say you lose skill by not practicing it as often, but not really besause it's cheating. There's no such thing imho as cheating when you try to reproduce reality as long as you don't lie on how you did it :)
