  • Hot Intermodal Train NS 24X slowly rolls northbound going from track 2 to Track 1 by CP Cherokee. This video has a few noteworthy aspects to it. First up, we'll see Engine 4822 The Thanks to our Railroaders Locomotive. I must say, I like the black and red scheme. 2nd is the hot intermodal was rolling slowly. This is due to the hotbox at Zion Hill picking up a 600-degree axle, on the last car of the consist. It was said utilities left on the handbrake. Thirdly, the cooperation between 24X's crew and 154's to resolve the issue and get 24X moving in a timely manner. They managed to diagnose, resolve, and get a high priority train moving in this 9 and a half min video. Included is all the scanner chatter with and between 24X, 154, Wayside, and the Charlotte Disp.

I caught that same train in Lowell. I was in Marion, which is on the Blueridge sub hanging out with SouthernRailfan. I was alerted to 24X having 4822 in the lead, & had to travel 2 hours, barely beating it. If it wasn’t for the hot axle, I would’ve missed it.

Cool! You can thank the DD at Zion Hill catching the hot axle, and utilities for leaving the handbrake engaged. Marion to Lowell is a nice drive, wow. I think we've all made those drives to catch something hot. For example, I did a 20 Mile drive to catch a really long WE freight between Spencer and Loki, then zipped back up to Wellington to catch an Ex Rio Grande tunnel motor on another WE freight.

It’s instances like this that perfectly explain why one-man crews on these freight trains is such a bad idea. More people on the train allows for situations like this to get resolved a whole lot quicker.
