He may have had the greatest season by a tight end ever in 1961. As a rookie, in his last 12 games (he had 1 catch for 18 yards in his first game), Ditka had over a thousand yards and 12 touchdowns. As a ROOKIE TIGHT END IN 1961. He was on pace for 1400 yards and 16 touchdowns, which would break Kittle's record that he set this year.
Xavier Vega EXACTLY!! They were contemporaries. Note how each of them caught important TDs playing in back to back SBs (#s 5 and 6). There are several TEs of this era who have more career catches than Ditka and Mackey COMBINED. But D&M opened up the possibilities that made other's more prolific careers possible. Ditka's definition of a TE being an extension of the tackle position was on point for the era in which they played. Most teams took the Paul Brown philosophy on passing: there are 3 things that can happen when you pass the ball, and 2 of them are bad!! The old school footage of both Ditka and Mackey running after their catches is remarkable!!
“If Ditka played in today’s game, he would catch 100 balls a season easily; he was that type of talent,” Buffone said. “In that era, you destroyed the tight end as he came off the line, absolutely destroyed him. There was none of this free release stuff you see now.”
The whole generation of men born around WW2 was a hard working generation of guy's that took care of business. My dad was a great all around athlete and in HS was the 2nd highest leading scorer in the state of Wisconsin two years in a row in the late 50s. He retired at 58 but has worked for me ever since and when he takes on anything it get's done! I know a lot of other guy's my dad's age and all are the same, it's like the worst thing they could possibly do is not take care of something that they were responsible for.
He really is. The kind of guy whose word is as good as a contract. He is beloved, and the primary reason why Dallas became "America's team." A true role model.
Roger Staubach was a great leader as well. He got his players to play above thier own expectations. He was tough as nails. Could take a beating that todays quarterbacks don't have to worry about
The Original Gronkowski. Mike Ditka was the first 1000 yard receiver at the Tight End Position. He did that in a 14 game season in the early 1961 and scored 12 TD's!!! The next season he got over 900 yards . He had 5 straight Pro bowl seasons to start his career and had a 75 catch 900 yard season in his career. That would be good in Today's NFL. OH, and by the way, in his rookie Season -- HE AVERAGED ALMOST 20 Yards Per CATCH!!! That's a top 100 player of all time!
@@strykrpinoyNo, the question is whether those skinny white guys would survive trying to tackle 6’6” 265 pounds Gronk if they had trouble tackling 6’4” 228 pounds Ditka 😂
The only reason Ditka was the first TE elected to the HOF, was because of John Mackey's role in the players forming a union. Even Ditka asked How did I get into the HOF before Mackey!
What’s amazing about that catch at run at 0:44 is that that took place the first game after president Kennedy was shoot and afterwards when he was asked about it he said Kennedy was a man who gave it his all so he felt that he owed it to him to give his all
I got to see Ditka play as a Dallas Cowboys as he finished his playing career with them. He was still tough, and a good tight end even then. Ditka was tough...almost like having a defensive guy on offense. He later coached as an assistant for the Cowboys.
Bill Swerski: Now, gentlemen, let me ask you this: What if Da Bears were all 14 inches tall, you know, about so high? Now, what's your score of today's game? Carl Wollarski: Against Da Giants? Bill Swerski: Yes, give 'em a handicap. Carl Wollarski: Bears 18, Giants 10. And that would finally be a good game. Pat Arnold: Yeah, it would be a good game. Mini Bears 24, Giants 14. Todd O'Conner: What about Ditka? Would he be mini, too? Bill Swerski: No, he would be full-grown. Todd O'Conner: Oh, then, uh.. Mini Bears 31, Giants 7. Carl Wollarski: Oh, hold on. Then I change mine, too. I thought it was Mini Ditka.
Is it just me, or did I miss something. In how many of these other top 100 videos did they show a receiver dropping a ball...a player on defense missing a tackle...a quarterback throwing a bad pass...an offensive lineman missing a block...but out of the kindness of their hearts they show ditka dropping a pass in the Superbowl. Here is a great football player and I believe all of these videos are not much longer than 6 minutes...to dedicate any time to one bad play isn't the best idea when you are promoting that this guy belongs in the top 100 players of all time.
Definitely a trend setter at TE. Started off his career like a house on fire, but really had a lot of meager years once he was traded. Not sure he'd be that popular if he played on bad teams.
George Halas made a Huge mistake trading Mike Ditka to Philadelphia for Jack Concannon. But He made an even larger mistake by letting George Allen leave to Coach the Rams.
Well actually Payton was given the ball 3 times when the Bears were inside New England's 5 yard line at different times earlier in the game. He had his chances, he just couldn't get in. But everyone only remembers the last time when he gave it to Perry.
I was a senior in HS for the 85' Bears thing, and didn't care for the Mike Ditka of that time at all, just because I didn't care for the heavy ego types, but I also didn't know his background and now I have the utmost respect for the guy. Even at 80 or pushing 80, that's a dude you don't want to mess with!
You do know because of jealously, he took the Bears out of the 46 Defense, as soon as Buddy Ryan left, out of jealously and the Bears, under Ditka, never came close, again, to winning anything?
the bears had some great teams from 1984 to 1991, won their division 6 out of 8 years, in the playoffs 7 out of 8 years. should have been to more than one super bowl, i was a big bears fan back in those days and imo ditka would get out coached in playoff games, especially against joe gibbs. the nfc was extremely dominant in the 80's and 90's, they won 15 of 16 super bowls
Real Bears fans know Ditka was a great leader, but the truly elite coach on that team and reason for the defensive dominance was Buddy Ryan. Ditka earned his respect but he gets more credit than he deserves for the '85 Bears. If he had it his way, Buddy Ryan probably wouldn't have been there that year, and they probably wouldn't have won it all.
