Three of the first lures I remember having in my tackle box as a kid were a floating Rapala, a red & white Daredevil spoon, and Mepps inline spinners. Didn't need much of anything else. They worked 50 years ago, and still work now.
I've never fished spoons until last year they are an interesting lure and there are so many different ones!I want to get good at fishing them I love to challenge myself..I've only caught a fish on a mepps wolf spoon so far but I've bought a bunch of them to try..
my favorite growing up has always been panther martin. That’s because they would spin at slow speeds where other ones did not. I grew up going to the north Georgia mountains, and using those for trout all the time.👍
Thank you. You are the first RUclipsr, pro angler I have EVER heard even mention inline spinners. Classic bait. Best trout-stream catcher too! And remember the Snagless Sally inline buzzbait? For the record, my PB bass is on a jitterbug, and my PB pike is on a #5 Mepos Aglia. Then again, I'm old!
@@jonorech caught an 8, 2 lm on a jitterbug in NH back in the 80's. Based on Matt's video I bought a few of the Bronze Slammers but haven't used them yet. I also make my own inlines and they catch everything.
In-line spinners are amazing! Some of them you can’t change out the hook so I cut the treble hook eye take it off and put on a split ring. Now I can use a small offset and small plastic and make it weedless.
Wordens striper rooster tail still gets bit pretty good the hook is alright but. The wordens Joe Thomas Pro series rooster are built a little better and come with nicer hook than the striper one. The striper model tho is better for fishing deeper water.
Inline spinners are fish catching machines. One time, I was sitting on my kayak 20 yards from my buddy. Fishing was slow. That's when I tied on a #2 black fury. From the first cast, I started catching bass. Caught about 20 in about an hour. I call it the old forgotten lure.
Hey Matt, I fish ponds and small lakes from the bank and I have an in-line spinner tied on all the time. I catch more with it than I do with a spinnerbait. I use no’s. 3, 4 and 5. It flat out catches fish and it is a lot of fun to throw.
Awesome video! I love them old mepps and rooster tails!! I've never seen the weedless one I'm very interested in trying that I live on a very weedy lake loaded with huge smallies and large mouth!!
Take the treble hook off the split ring and put a weighted swimbait hook on and your favorite swimbait or even a creature bait and prepare to smile 😃.. Hope you have great season 👍
I’m a kid who spends a lot of time hanging out with “serious” bass anglers. It’s just never been talked about and has always been considered a “kids bait.” Well, this kid doesn’t want to seem like any more of a kid. Until, I couldn’t get bit on anything and for the first time ever threw one. BOOM, second cast a decent lil largemouth hits it, and gets two hooks in the side of his face (YUP they eat it GOOD). The inline spinner now holds a special place in my heart. Also, I didn’t hear you talk about the Strike king Bitsy Spinner, but that right there is a quality little bass spinner!
Great job giving props to the Spinners! I use Mepps in a variety of sizes and always catch fish. I have some pics and info on some of my catches on the Mepps website. They catch fish all the time! I have lots of videos posted on my channel of me catching fish with them. I also posted a video on what I do to bring back the shine to the spinners I clean up.
I grew up fishing mepps spinners and the old style eppinger red and white and black and white daredevil spoons. It's about time someone brought up one of these old style lures. Caught a lot of fish on the old style spinners. You should make a video about the old Eppinger and little Cleo spoons as well. Caught my personal best largemouth (7+ pounder) when I was about 12 years old trolling on Cross Lake in upstate NY on a zebco spincast combo with a red and white daredevil spoon.
After your video of the newer bronze slammer by Mepps I bought some. Nice bait. I had my daughter fish Mepps inline spinners growing up and now I have her sons fishing them. A fishing tradition.
I hope that you schooled the ol boy at the tackle shop! After your initial video about the Mepps Bronze Slammer, I purchased twelve of them. Excellent bait, well made and they flat catch bass, especially river Smallmouth! Thanks for the video Matt
Got a bunch of small inline spinners last year and had a great season catching everything the pond offered. A great was to diversify. Thanks for the great vid Matt.
Thanks Matt. No chuckle here, the Mepps is arguably the best shallow current lure ever. Wading creeks, I have caught more smallmouth bass than I can count (up to 3lbs). I just bought last year the updated snagless Sally. I will try it this year. In my early teens a buddy of mine use to whup me fishing with a Sally and I could never find one to buy(he loved it). Have you tried the new snagless Sally? I noticed you bent the weed guards over, I didn't think that you were supposed too. I am not sure, it's been years since I have seen them fished.
All my biggest small mouth came fishing mepps flying Cs for salmon. Thanks for the content! I’ve unsubscribed from a bunch of other bass fishing channels, but yours is great, info and personality.
I just picked up a Mepps like that first one the other day, cut of the treble and added a split ring and EWG for adding small swimbaits. Locating something like a Snagless Sally has been tough, unless you buy online. That guy had no idea what he is missing.
Oh man , Matt !!! When I was a youngster , I used to work the Bass over in local area ponds and lakes with the Mepps Minnows !! I still have two of them in my tackle box !! Good Video, Matt !!
WOW!! I can't believe you let this one out of the bag. With so much click bait on RUclips it's hard to find the real deal. I've been doing using them on Bass forever. I was fishing once with them when a former BassMaster Classic winner and Angler of the year was filming a videos near me and asked what I was using since the bite was tuff. I told him a Mepps inline and he laughed. He said that that's a big secret on the tours and he couldn't use that on the video. So, if a classic winner, angler of the year and multiple blue trophies and MLF trophies is trying to keep it a secret it was cool you said it. Keep up the great job.
When I fish #4 or #5 Mepps and Blue Fox spinners I cut the treble hook off and, using a split ring, add a screw lock weighted swim bait hook. I usually use a tube bait as a trailer. The single weighted hooks helps eliminates line twist and snags.
Absolutely classic lures. While I primarily fish for Bass, I'm happy to catch anything and that's a big part of what I love about in-line spinners... You really never know what's going to bite them. Another great thing about them is that they're damn near indestructable. Worst you're gonna do is bend out a hook or let it rust.
Never heard of the snagless Sally! Seems would be a great lure for the Potomac River. Submerged grass everywhere you fish. Gotta get some in green pumpkin colored skirt!
Matt great video; we use inline spinners in our northern lakes and streams often. My favorites are from Kodiak Custom Fishing Tackle in Alaska. They make bright colors with a single or treble hook and work great for SM and LM. [plus pike] basically a cross between the two you reviewed. Not specifically made for bass but the pink and silver just seems to work.
I picked up 2 slammers based on your recommendation. Been fishing with spinners most of the time on the water. Agreed with everything you said on this topic.
I love the in-line spinners when fishing creeks from the kayak. It will catch largemouth, crappie, white bass, drum and even bowfin. It’s deadly and just need to make sure you have a couple extra on board because the trebles are unforgiving.
As a bank fishermen this happened to me other day at my local pond. I lost worms, spinnerbaits, etc. I had a box a inline spinners. After changing to a all brass one. 3 crappie hit it and caught 2. Matt is right. They are way overlooked. I now carry them with me. Great video btw!
I did a upgrade video on my channel a while back about rooster tails specifically, cut the stock hook off #2 split ring and your personal favorite flavor of treble hook. Personally I’m a fan of the size 4 mustad ultra point feathered hood, bonus it’s ewg style. Rooster tails have the skirt on the body of the bait so by adding a feathered hook to a 1/4 rooster you end up with a big body lighter weight spinner. Works great for bass and only the big trout can take the hook, the little trout will hit it and miss.
I have a bunch of Hildabrant Snagless sally's and super sally's. Also I have bunch of other inline spinners and go for musky and walleye. Most of mine are in sizes 2-5.
Wow Matt, I buy latest colors and tail featerd hooks on jitter bug, and hula popper!!!!! And guess what, last torney I won, which has been 3 years, kicker 4lber came of a black jitter bug! Tell you another good smallmouth in liner is mepps black furry series.
The Mepps #5 Black Fury was my most productive lure this past year. I’d try out plenty of other lures, and fail, and the Mepps would almost always save the day. High quality, inexpensive, readily available, durable, and productive; What more could you ask for?
Meps iglia long and Abu garcia reflex spinners. Never fish them any more, but respect the OG fish catchers. If kids or new beginners are in the boat they are a given.
This again is one of those great all time Bates that we who are tackled junkies put aside because it's fun to catch fish on different thanks. They never stopped working. Matthew may wan to even think about using a black 1 when fishing any tournaments up in Sturgeon Bay.
Jitterbug....the best big bass catching lure ever made...old skool wooden bugs after dark is where it's at supposedly I don't have any but if u do get on it
Hey Matt how do I sign up for that thing where I can ask you questions for an hour? I fish all the right spots with the right baits and just don't seem to catch them very well. I average about 1 fish every trip or 2. Idk what I'm doing wrong
For highland impoundments id go with the pearl shad tail and chartreuse shad tail www.tacklewarehouse.com/Mepps_Bronze_Slammer_Inline_Spinner/descpage-MBSI.html?from=MSFG
Man, I’m always throwing in lines. Blue foxes, mepps. I’ve ever got ideas from you to create lures which have been inline spinner type baits. I caught a bunch of fish on them this past year. My son will pick an in-line spinner over most lures because he knows they work. I’ll always recommend him to throw it. Lol. That guy can keep making fun of them while we catch fish with em. 😂😂😂
Took my son in law outlast week in October last year. He started through ing a Meeps spinner and kicked my butt on smallmouth. I think I need to add one to my arsenal this year
I fished this very small lake in western ny for a few hours using the traditional go to baits that will catch something 99% of the time, and I couldn't get a bite. So I gave up on the bass and put a small Musky spinner (double 6 blade ) on for Pike, and 10 minutes later, I caught a 5.5lb bass. I tossed it out maybe 10 times and caught a 6.4lb bass, and in the next 2hrs I caught two low 5lb'ers and 5.9lb. One of them had an 8in bullhead halfway down its throat and still choked the whole spinner 😆. I made a few more trips back and caught another 20 fish in the 5lb range using the musky mayhem micro/ baby girl spinner. I tried everything, but the big ones would only eat the spinners, and this was 52-55 degree water temps, 4-6ft depth and burning it fast enough to keep it skimming the top of the grass. 🤷♂️
Beauty is in the eyes of the angler,snag-less sally an a small swim bait trailer has put some very nice fish on the line milfoil is perfect for this approach it works for me to catch everything from salmon an steelhead bass, perch, walleye ,trout, catfish ,what ever is biting I ware out these baits every year starting with trout.
What’s up Matt? For these bronze slammers are you normally fishing the 1/2 oz size? You said you like to throw them on a baitcaster so I was just wondering
@@MattStefanFishing thanks man! I fish a lot of bass tournaments and I’m always looking for something different to show the bass on the highly pressured lakes I fish
I don't like the double blade spinners on the market so I make my own, by cutting the treble hook of a quarter ounce panther martin, then put on a split ring and attach to a number two blade blue fox. Both blades spin freely and it catches fish.
I prefer tail spin compare to a in-line spinner which better avoiding line twist, the tail spin I use is like 3g-5g which is equivalent to 1/16oz - 1/8oz
Glad to see this inline spinners. For the last two days, I have been fishing in a new spot in the DuPage river (with an array of current speeds) here near northwestern Illinois. Using mostly bass adapted patterns baits, Ive been skunked all the time. After watching this video, I have taken out all of my Mepps (lite, aglia, black fury, vibra-fox, rosster tail) and will test them out this week. “Poseidon, god of waters, release all the fish in the DuPage River to show us the powers of Mepps and keep the Skunk Kraken away!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Are you coming down with the same crud I have?? I picked on the cough. Yeah I always pack a handful of inline on the boat. Yet rarely find the need to use them.
The Hawaii Wiggler is one of my favorite ones for 40+ years. We slammed them in my earlier days in the 60’s,70’sand earlier 80’s. Look them up. The smaller ones say 1/3 Oz. Need a trailer hook. Let me know how they work for you in the spring.
One of the reasons I don't use in line spinners too much anymore is because it's so hard to unhook a fish with his jaw shut tight over three hooks in a treble hook! ... on the subject of legendary and forgotten lures... So have you ever fished with and/or do you maybe still have a timber spin? Killer under certain lily pad and submerged vegetation situations. I've been thinking of buying hardware to make my own since they're not made anymore.
I am guilty of NOT using in-line spinners for bass since...... Way back LOL I will correct that this year for sure! I ALWAYS use them for trout, so I should be for bass. One thing I do when fishing them for trout with spinning gear, is to extend my index finger to hit my line as I retrieve. It makes the spinner jump all around and causes reaction strikes.
I fished mepps for years buying them in all colors for bass and northerns. I even fished them in bass tournaments using them in thin cover, open water cover, over the top of wood and grass. They have been moved to the back of the bus because of the times where fishing compaction pushing all these new baits. Tell you the truth in the right hands those old baits would out fish the new ones 💯💯💯💯💯👍🏽
The in line spinner is my go to when I really need a bite ... best hour fishing was 42 bass using the in line bait in the fall on a school ... Almost everything that swims will eat it ...small ones work great for rainbow trout , crappie and bluegill. Use a larger one to catch the biggest white bass in the school. If you don't fish it or think it's a joke ??? sorry for you better for me.
Great video!! Caught a nice 21" Brown trout years ago on a Rooster Tail. Tried using in-line spinners again a couple years ago but had no luck. What size would be your go to for the rivers?? Would like to try using these again. Stay Safe & God Bless!!
According to my chart here, it looks as though. Size zero Mepps is twelfth ounce (2,3 gram). Size one Mepps is one-eighth ounce (3,5 gram). Size two Mepps is one-sixth of an ounce (almost 5 gram). Size three Mepps is quarter ounce (7 gram). Size four Mepps is third ounce (9,5 gram). Size five Mepps is half ounce (14 gram). Musky Mepps are in three quarter and one ounce versions (21 gram and 28 gram).
Size zero to size four are 'four inch' wire lengths. Size five is a 'six inch' wire length. The Musky's are all 'eight inch' wire lengths. And on blade sizes, the blade sizes actually give the Mepps in-line spinners their numbering system. I.e. A zero size Mepps in-line is a zero size blade. On the Musky side of it, the Mepps Musky in-lines with 'eight inch' wire length, have five size blades, starting with French blade, and then a Willow blade (both are five size blades). And the largest Musky in-line models can come with six, eight, nine and ten blade sizes.
For large predatory brown trout, and this seems to be fairly dialled in. I don't know why. The anglers I know who specialized in this kind of thing. Blade color was gold and red painted decoration. Size of blade was number 2. Which equates in 'weight terms for the lure' as a 'one-sixth' ounce or approximately a 5,0 gram lure weight. Why does that work? For brown trout. I've no idea. I know that the number one blades were too small (the size three or quarter ounce lures on the other hand were too large). For some reason it had to be size two blade, sixth-ounce weight (between one-eight ounce and quarter-ounce). For migratory sea-run species of salmonoids, other colors came into play. Such as black blades with yellow painted decorations. Or silver willow type blades with yellow plastic or painted bodies. As far as non-migratory, or resident large brown trout (top of food chain in rivers). The number two. And I assume it has something to do with forage size in those rivers. It also had something to do with that trigger that Matt mentioned (where the lure was paused in order that the blade flared out). What that did was to stop the blade vibrating periodically, and then re-start that action again. For some reason that stop, and re-start thing is important. And on depth ranges of typical rivers and feeding zones. Which was quite shallow, the number two blades seemed to accomplish it. Whereas the number one unfortunately did not. Most would prefer to throw number one's I think for those trout. But it doesn't work. Neither did the silver and blue colors. Which was the biggest selling Mepps type. The less common gold and red, number two. Was what the experts threw. And didn't say much about it.

great bait for beginners!
I love that people forget these old Bates. I win tournaments every year on the same spinners and top water devils horse.
Nice!
Like my mepps and roster tails. Tight lines
me too!
Used the snag less Sally growing up in Florida decades ago!
Nice!
This again is one of those great all time Bates that we who are tackled junkies put aside because it's fun to catch fish on different thanks. They never stopped working. Matthew may wan to even think about using a black 1 when fishing any tournaments up in Sturgeon Bay.
definitely worth a shot!
I have been using mepps spinners forever.
Nice!
I have wrecked them on the snagless sally! Very underated lure.
yes it is!
Jitterbug....the best big bass catching lure ever made...old skool wooden bugs after dark is where it's at supposedly I don't have any but if u do get on it
its a good one
Inline spinnerbait are great , I just get line twist even with a swivel.
they can cause line twist
had the same problem, try a Keel Weighted Body....Yakima Vibric Rooster Tail Spinner
Heavier line helps but that is there downfall. A good ball bearing swivel should keep the line fishable. Good luck!
Flounder redfish and speckled trout love a panther martin
nice!
Hey Matt how do I sign up for that thing where I can ask you questions for an hour? I fish all the right spots with the right baits and just don't seem to catch them very well. I average about 1 fish every trip or 2. Idk what I'm doing wrong
Here is the link to sign up for virtual lessons. fishthemoment.com/video-lessons-matt-stefan
Do you have issue with line twist? The Duo Spearhead Ryuki Spinner has a built in swivel line tie to reduce line twist.
it does get some line twist but worth it since it catches fish
What time of year do you think they’re best for bass? Same seasons as regular spinnerbaits?
they work great spring - fall
What size and colors would you guys recommend on the bronze slammer? Clear water highland reservoir
For highland impoundments id go with the pearl shad tail and chartreuse shad tail www.tacklewarehouse.com/Mepps_Bronze_Slammer_Inline_Spinner/descpage-MBSI.html?from=MSFG
@@MattStefanFishing thank you for the reply. Big fan
agreed!
I used to fish a rooster tail religiously. I will definitely put some inlines back into Mt arsenal
they catch fish!
Took my son in law outlast week in October last year. He started through ing a Meeps spinner and kicked my butt on smallmouth. I think I need to add one to my arsenal this year
you should!
I modified one, removed the treble, replaced it with a small EWG, put on a small swim bait, and actually caught some at LoZ.
Nice!
i agree let those who dont know laugh and well catch the fish love the classics they still produce thats why they still make them
agreed!
awesome story! thanks for sharing!
Beauty is in the eyes of the angler,snag-less sally an a small swim bait trailer has put some very nice fish on the line milfoil is perfect for this approach it works for me to catch everything from salmon an steelhead bass, perch, walleye ,trout, catfish ,what ever is biting I ware out these baits every year starting with trout.
thanks for sharing!
What’s up Matt? For these bronze slammers are you normally fishing the 1/2 oz size? You said you like to throw them on a baitcaster so I was just wondering
i fish all three sizes on the baitcaster and like them all. the 1/3 is probably my favorite
@@MattStefanFishing thanks man! I fish a lot of bass tournaments and I’m always looking for something different to show the bass on the highly pressured lakes I fish
Let's face it haters will be haters. Thanks Matt
yep
Hi , i got a question, can i use a spinning rod medium heavy for a 3/8 oz Chatterbait? Since i fish on shore on a dock?
Yes you can!
I don't like the double blade spinners on the market so I make my own, by cutting the treble hook of a quarter ounce panther martin, then put on a split ring and attach to a number two blade blue fox. Both blades spin freely and it catches fish.
i prefer single blade as well
I prefer tail spin compare to a in-line spinner which better avoiding line twist, the tail spin I use is like 3g-5g which is equivalent to 1/16oz - 1/8oz
interesting
@@MattStefanFishing you don't have to buy from eBay, but this is just the example, find a better deal before you made the purchase
I noticed that the flash-a-bou was bent on the inline spinner, does that effect the action of the bait and what weight of spinners do you throw?
i like the 1/3 oz size.
“Poseidon, god of waters, release all the fish in the DuPage River to show us the powers of Mepps and keep the Skunk Kraken away!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
haha!
I believe there were a cpl pros that kept light spinning rods for throwing in-line spinners tucked away in their rod boxes.
there are more than a couple
Are you coming down with the same crud I have?? I picked on the cough. Yeah I always pack a handful of inline on the boat. Yet rarely find the need to use them.
Im doing better now
🍺I believe you recently posted a video of when you caught pike and bass in numbers with a In-line-spinner. I think it made your top 10 of last season.
yep that was back in August but it was a great day of fishing!
Do you use trailers with your snagless sally?
sometimes
The Hawaii Wiggler is one of my favorite ones for 40+ years. We slammed them in my earlier days in the 60’s,70’sand earlier 80’s. Look them up.
The smaller ones say 1/3 Oz. Need a trailer hook. Let me know how they work for you in the spring.
thats a classic Ive got several!
Size 5 Swiss Swing.. incredible for catching any fish that eats minnows!
awesome!
Yep. Still use some of the old classics today. By the way, I'm 70 years young. The old baits still catch 5-pound bass.
awesome!
I've been thinking of buying hardware to make my own since they're not made anymore.
ill check it out
I am guilty of NOT using in-line spinners for bass since...... Way back LOL I will correct that this year for sure!
I ALWAYS use them for trout, so I should be for bass. One thing I do when fishing them for trout with spinning gear, is to extend my index finger to hit my line as I retrieve. It makes the spinner jump all around and causes reaction strikes.
give them a try!
These are northern pike and crappie baits 😉 fished mepps and rooster tails 50 years ago as a kid 😂 still catch bass on hula poppers and jitterbugs 🤣
all of those works for bass!
Dangit Matt! Let them think they suck lol
haha
I fished mepps for years buying them in all colors for bass and northerns. I even fished them in bass tournaments using them in thin cover, open water cover, over the top of wood and grass. They have been moved to the back of the bus because of the times where fishing compaction pushing all these new baits. Tell you the truth in the right hands those old baits would out fish the new ones 💯💯💯💯💯👍🏽
they are good!
Thats a fun day of fishing!
Great video!! Caught a nice 21" Brown trout years ago on a Rooster Tail. Tried using in-line spinners again a couple years ago but had no luck. What size would be your go to for the rivers?? Would like to try using these again. Stay Safe & God Bless!!
I like the 1/4 and 1/3 oz
@@MattStefanFishing What does the quarter and one-third ounce weight equal in the Mepps numbering system?
