Whew! This was a tough one to make. Soooo much information and I’m sure I forgot to say a few things 😅 This is the playlist I mentioned with helpful videos if you are considering adopting a mustang ruclips.net/p/PLbEQI4JgoYMlU7LLYdjwCgMclk4k8veBl

I have two Mustangs one titled one untitled. My first was from Devil’s Garden and I won her in a BLM auction. I had little experience with horses but plenty with wild cattle so I figured I’d give it a go. My original goal was to halter break her and get her to pick up her feet and then send her to be saddle trained. I was lucky, she was very easy to train and was walking in two days and within two weeks I was picking up her feet. I decided to try and start her under saddle and was successful.
My second is from Eagle NV. and has been more of a challenge. I picked her up in April from Wolcott CT. The Devil’s Garden mare they brought to Ewing IL. which was a haul from Maine. I have fun playing with them and hope to continue doing this as time goes on.
I have the advantage of growing up around animals and have a pretty good read on how they’re feeling. I know when they’re ready to kick or blow up and can usually avoid problems. If you’ve never done this I would recommend finding a mentor. I have a friend who’s Daughter trains Quater Horses and has given me advice from time to time. Watching videos is a big help but if you’ve never worked with large animals that would just as soon run through you as from you definitely seek help.
Just a few of my thoughts. I’m just an old farmer who has learned patients. I am by no means a horse trainer, but I manage. I’m not fast but I’m not really slow either. I guess you could say I’m half fast…

      "half fast" 😆
Mustangs from the Devil's Garden HMA seem to come up a lot when folks talk about better than average minds for gentling and training. I've heard the same about the herds in North East California as well.
Being old, half fast, on a small farm and managing with horses myself, I genuinely enjoyed your comment. Because my quarter horses have filed their retirement papers, I've either foolishly or daringly maintained a plan to adopt and start a mustang. I figure that if I managed to start a mustang when I was 14 when I knew almost nothing beyond riding a cow horse trained by someone else, I have a shot at pulling it off again without the wrecks. 😄The answer to most of my questions when I sought help back then was, "You'll figure it out." The first thing I figured out was the harder you hit the ground, the harder you'll work to figure something out instead of repeating the same mistakes. We certainly bounce off the ground and back onto our feet better at age 14 than 40, 50 and beyond. By now I'm a couple of years into this plan to adopt a mustang but one thing or another keeps getting in the way. The most recent surprise has landed me 9 days away from an MRI to decide if I'll need repair of a rotator cuff. Ugh, swell! At this rate I might never get beyond being a 'Project Equestrian' follower, but it's been totally worthwhile. Not only do I enjoy meeting her mustangs and following their progress, I've picked up a few new tricks that have helped a couple of my older horses with some long standing idiosyncrasies.
Your mention of hauling all the way from Illinois to Maine... Holy Moly! That's an inspiring testament of determination to give a mustang a home. Bravo. Simply awesome.

I picked up my 3-year-old Diamond gelding I won on the IA from the West Bend, WI event Sept 2022. I have never met such a solid-minded horse nor one that is so thoughtful. He tries so hard to do what's asked of him. Obviously, this is not going to be the same experience that EVERY diamond mustang has HOWEVER, I would strongly recommend researching specific HMA's. Galan (Diamond Gelding) was picked up unhandled and has completed all TIP requirements since then. Im hoping that he will be saddle trained by early summer but I will not be forcing him to meet my deadline. The last piece of advice I would add is to throw out your timeline expectations and realize that mustangs are acclimating to a whole new culture/language (working with/communicating with people). As with learning a language, speaking it fluently takes practice, consistency, and repetition. Be kind to yourself while going through this process. Its emotional for both you and the mustang.

We have 2 Diamonds. 1 is awesome & so willing. We got her on an IA. Winn is too small for us to ride so will be training her for carriage pulling. Our Gelding from Diamond was with somebody else & he was extremely shut down. He has come out of his shell & comes to us, noises & daily chore activities don't both him but he is not "touchable" as of yet. Once he gains our trust he will be rock solid. Our Eagle is the dominant, pushy one. Sally was previously owned & she is on that line of being great but possibly kick the crap out of you. I love the Diamonds.

    This is super helpful!
I'm not on the market for a mustang, (maybe someday!) But being in Oregon, there are literally hundreds of mustangs available around craigslist from people who have attempted to train them, (and some well trained too) only to realize it's a lot more work than your average horse to get started! I hope to see more TIP/mustang trainers pick up these horses!
I think mustang trainers are absolutely awesome, making these horses more accessible to the general horsey public 😄
and how you are sharing the gentling process - so good for people to see and understand what goes into it!

Oh that's really interesting about the mustangs on craigslist! Makes sense, but I guess not something we really see here in vermont much😂 And yea, I hope some other TIP/makeover trainers join the RUclips community!

It’s great that you are making videos like this to let people know this is a great option to get a wonderful horse that needs a home. As you know; we adopted our two mustangs from the BLM online adoption last December. Then we had to wait for them to be shipped to the facility nearest us.

So I'm 13 and I'm thinking about (in the future!) Doing one of these mustang makeovers, right now I'm thinking of going to some of the shows after some of the horses are trained and then auctioned off just to get a feel of things. Do you have any tips for me to know before going or doing anything? I'd love to know!

Are there other places/trainers that do work like project equestrian? Is there a website of people like you? I’m in Texas. Thanks for your work. Mustangs have always had a special place in my heart. I’ve owned horses all my life (currently have 4) but afraid I’m too old to do all the training now. Still hanging on to the dream though!

What I do is very similar to TIP Trainers, so I'd recommend you check out the Mustang Heritage Foundation's website to see if there is a trainer near you. A lot of TIP trainers will also do more training for an additional training fee if you want them too!

      @TheProjectEquestrian  2 года назад +4

I'm so glad it was helpful and interesting! It took a lot of preparation!
And, Hmmm, that's a tough question. My biggest thought would be to make sure you are doing a lot of research beforehand. There are numerous non-profits around and lot of people are willing to take donations, but you really want make sure that you are in alignment to their vision/mission, and how they operate. Like many others, I am not classified as a "non-profit", but make a negative profit working mustangs😂I've tried to offset some of my own out of pocket expenses caring for the mustangs through merch and channel memberships.
Also, investing in your own education can make a huge difference, especially when you think you will adopt in the future. The impact you can make as a knowledgable individual can also be powerful! I took this course last year, which was REALLY informational, and I'm hoping to do it again this year. You might find it interesting! magicmustangtamer.com/techtam/world-of-mustangs/
