Thanks Doug Ford.
Yes because its a partisan issue and liberals dont want more housing and or immigration?
Better idea: create a building project to house the homeless in tent encampments all over the province. Mayor Andrea Horvath's solution to the homeless crisis is to give amnesty to anyone to parks their tent in a Hamilton city park. Take the OSC land, build 12-15 buildings at 50 stories each. Put the homeless there and solve many of the problems cities are facing with homeless people.

5 years to replace a roof. Gimme a break. This is all about Ford helping his developer friends. Someone needs to look into Rimkus Consulting Group and what other projects are they involved with. Are they involved in the buildings that will replace the Science Centre or the Ontario Place replacement?
You got it. Take a look at the old Celestica campus less than a mile away. The Conservation Authority will be told to shut up.

Rimkus is an impartial engineering firm. The government just used them because they wanted the illusion that shutting down Ontario Place would not be perceived as a political move.

Part of the nostalgia of visiting the OSC as a kid (in the 90s and early 2000s) was the classic architecture of it. Even back then, the building had an interesting appeal because it looked dated inside. The exposed concrete design added to the theme of science being rooted in the discoveries of the past. $40,000,000 TO REPLACE A ROOF !!! Are you serious? There are other elements at play here would be my humble guess.
In my small town a number of years ago, the local government, in its infinite wisdom sold off a High school that was about the same age as the Science museum is now. It was sold to a local contractor (without public tender) for the total sum of $1. (yes, that is correct one dollar). It was a massive structure on a number of acres of land. The local council claimed after having some sort of engineering report in hand that the roof was leaking and totally unsafe.
Instead, a new High school was built that is considerably smaller than the original and soon after portables were added to that property. Does this make any sense?
The old High school has since been given a total facelift and is now a high-end apartment rental complex. Yes, it is a beautiful building. Yes, the contractor put a lot of money and effort into the structure to convert it BUT my point here is our various governments are a way to quick to tear down or condemn a potentially viable building rather than improve and refurbish an older one.
When you look to European countries with structures that go back many centuries and are still solid and beautiful structures, then surely we Canadians should be able to create a structure that can survive more than 50+ years. Its truly sad. We have to do better. A concerned Canadian.
Wow. It takes $40 million to replace the roof.
Anyone with a brain knows how BS that is.
Trudeau just spent $220,000 on FOOD during a 6-day trip. Your thoughts on that?

WHAT?! NOOOO! I loved that place! I grew up always wanting to go there. I was looking forward to going again this year!
Doug Ford needs more land to give his developer buddies.
“The roof is leaking so we must destroy the entire building”
My car has a flat tire so I must crush it and buy a new one. At taxpayers expense.
The roof is probably fine and this is all a conspiracy.
Threat of the roof collapsing next winter sounds highly suspect and specific. What prevented it from collapsing last winter? Were people risking their lives visiting it then? Has there been structural damage since? Why wait so long to do preventative maintenance? Are other buildings of the same vintage collapsing during the winter?
Corruption seems more plausible than science or physics on this one.
It's Canadian government -- corruption *is* their science. They can't have people intelligent enough to question their decisions.
Verrrrrry curious timing. Ford taking us all for idiots ... as usual.
Good , I like Doug .
How incredibly sad. This was one of my favourite places as a kid and for my own children as well. Just think of the little minds that won’t get to enjoy the exhibits and learn while possibly inspiring our next great science minds!
Let’s talk about voting for scientists rather than junk versions of that.
Snow is a real danger to roofs in the middle of what will be the hottest summer on record.
So decades of neglect gives conservatives the excuse to now tear it down and put up condos for some rich developer that has ford and his cronies in their pockets

These facilities were built with a 200 year lifespan. The roof is supposed to be maintainable for that period of time. If not, then replaceable. The point is that the structure wasn't built by a child. This is the science center, made with such considerations as to be repairable and semi-permanent structures.
Imagine kids that had school trips today or next week to the OSC.

Architecture from the 1960s is distinctive in many ways. Some say the designs were as radical as the changes in society. But just as historic buildings were put to the wrecking ball to make way for the future of modernism, buildings constructed in the 1960s are being demolished today, but for a different reason, engineering and functional deficiencies.
The New York Times article, "The End of 1960's Architecture" by Fred A. Bernstein, Oct. 31, 2004, gives some insight into the issues. The L.A. Times article, "1960s architecture: L.A. and the paradox of preservation", Christopher Hawthorne, Oct 11, 2009, gives another perspective and insight.

The science center is an amazing place that has nurtured the minds of millions of children over the years.
Ontario, and Canada as a whole, will be losing a national treasure if that place shuts down for good.
I agree that the Ontario Science Centre is a wonderful place, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't support Ukraine which is fighting for its freedom and survival against a Russian authoritarian.
Also, the government of Ontario has not sent any money to Ukraine that I am aware of.
@@martinutr That money isn't helping them. Most of that money cannot be accounted for, meaning nobody knows where it went.
Also, it's not for survival. It's for a small piece of land. Russia could have easily taken that whole country by now, but they haven't. They've been honest about only taking back that piece of land that was previously theirs, and have not pushed past it. They've chosen to just sit there at the line, and have an endless artillery battle, which is by no means the strategically wise thing to do, but it is the most honest thing to do.
Also, it was the Ukraine that escalated the conflict in the beginning. At first it was a peaceful occupation. The local residents of that land were enjoying it, and joking with the Russians solders who were under specific orders to not inconvenience the locals. It only escalated when the Ukraine soldiers showed up with rocket launchers given to them by the UK, and used them without hesitation, causing casualties on the Russian side.
We live in the age of information. This whole conflict has been recorded on video from start to current time, yet everyone is misinformed about it, because rather than looking into the conflict themselves, they opt to just trust the media to summarize the conflict for them without any bias, which is laughably naive.
Anyways, TLDR: The money isn't helping them. It's just corrupt politicians doing a bit of war profiteering on a dumb conflict we have no business being a part of.
