  • In 1997 a rap group from Marseille created a perfect album. Here is my explanation of what makes it so great. Bass! Rhymes! Flow! Samples!
    Matched, never bested.
Plus, I let you into the personal journey that the album set me on upon its release. I owe everything to this music.

as a born and bred Marseillais, i think what strikes me the most is how accurate those lyrics still are twenty years down the line. France still doesn't see, or refuses to see marseille, and it sucks. I don't come from hip-hop at all, and what drew me in were a hundred percent the lyrics, so real and honest and true and beautiful

Still remember when I discovered that album when I was doing my military service in Toulon- not far from from Marseille BTW- back in late 1998. I've always been a big heavy metal head, and then thanks to a friend who was living in Biarritz- SW France- I discovered Public enemy in 1990 and then a couple of years later the Clan and then the SW coast no band in France was trying to reproduce at that time in France.
What a milestone. Demain c'est loin will never age, yeah my mother family is from Naples, yeah I was born in the southern part of France with a good chunk of my family being from Guadeloupe, but still Art is Art.
    Take care

I am very glad you are talking about this album! There is a reason why my only classic review yet is this album, in terms of french rap, it was a revolutionary album. Sonically, lyrically, this thing is amazing.
Nonetheless I still don't see myself using this album in class (german middle school french foreign language), not necessarily because of the complexity but mostly because today, in the last few years, rap in France has a very different way of expression.

I like your take on French hip-hop, it's got me interested to listen to this album. I'm glad you stressed that this groups music developed separately from American hip-hop, and not just copying wu-tang. Its also funny to see that even though this type of music is supposed to be a voice of the voiceless, sometimes that voice can be twisted or suppressed, like people claiming hip-hop promotes violence, or the rest of the world still not being aware of the diversity of Marseille.
I thought a lot about other countries hip-hop scenes, mainly Russian and Ukrainian, which I am a big fan of. Unlike the group IAM, a lot of the Russian hop-hop was influenced from America, and the Ukrainian scene from the Russian. I'm aware of the myriad of Russian hip hop music, so it was surprising to hear that France is number two in the world for production and consumption. I'm glad you're bringing this to peoples attention.

Something important I learned from this is that the group is very diverse and has a lot of different people represented in the group. Something unexpected that I learned was how they used samples from Cream and how important the Bass was to the album. I do like some hip-hop music, it’s a new acquired taste for me as I’ve tried to explore more music genres over the past couples of years.

This was a fantastic random video to find (albeit while searching for something similar). I don't recall when I bought this album or how I found it, but I imagine it was sometime after I bought Massive Töne's 'Überfall' in Germany in summer 2002, which featured IAM on the track 'Zeit.' That same time I also bought DJ Tomekk's album from 2000 'Return of Hip Hop,' which did feature a member of the Wu-Tang, GZA, on the fantastic track 'Ich Lebe für Hip Hop.'
Thanks for reminding me of this album. It's one of those I'll play over and over (even saved some of the instrumental tracks to a playlist I used to play at work), then forget about, then revisit.
But speaking of Star Wars samples/references, check out Phoenix Orion's 1998 release 'Zimulated Experiencez,' notably the track 'Jedi Mastery.'

I think the most important thing I learned from this is just how diverse rappers in France are, be is race, but as well as just having dancers in the group. Pretty interesting. I think the most unexpected thing I learned is the nerdum in rap in general, I used to pride myself on being into nerdcore/geek rap, but interesting to know pop culture influenced rap way before I thought. I enjoy the message of anti-crime and “peace, love and having fun”. I’m interested in checking out I AM more, it hasn’t pulled me in just yet, but I’ll lookup some tunes.

    Salut,
I love your personal story, it seems like we all have that one thing that pushed us to learn French, not just French but whatever it is that we’re studying. IAM was the first French music I listened to, except good ol Jean Jacques Goldman since I had to memorize one of his songs from middle school French, but thanks to you speaking about IAM during My Freshman year I started to view French music a little more seriously. It’s important to find that one thing you enjoy, like IAM’s album and tear it apart to understand the underlying meanings, I have a lot of respect for you because of that.
I also had no idea that when they rapped they talked about not doing bad things. That’s really interesting when you compare it to a lot of modern American hip hop where they typically talk about some pretty raunchy stuff.
IAM definitely produces some good ass music, I do think there are some more modern day groups that I would prefer over IAM, maybe like Brockhampton, or Earthgang, or even just Dreamville artists, but they still have some incredible music.

The most important thing I learned was that there were very few non-white entertainers in France before hip-hop diversified the music industry there. One thing I learned that was unexpected was that France has stayed more true to traditional hip-hop than America has. I love hip-hop myself, I've been listening to this kind of music since junior high. I've bounced around to several different genres but I think I like music mostly because you can apply it to so many different atmospheres i.e. in your car, at the gym, studying, etc. Great video! - Corey

I'd say the most important thing I learned is that I AM's message was to not be a criminal or drug dealer but to live, be good and have fun. That message is shared by many modern hip/hop artists like Hopsin or Deltron, interestingly they also have similar mastery of singing on the beat continuously with lyrics that have actual meaning rather than the guns drugs and explicitness of the rap genre today.
I didn't know that France was the second highest producer and consumer of hip/hop in the world, but given the similar cultural backgrounds of France and the US regarding liberty, oppression and freedom I could see how the genre would thrive. I definitely like their music, it's very similar to some of my favorite artists, I like music that has stong beats and flowing lyrics.

Voici le lien cher professeur skye. A écouter c'est un chef d'oeuvre.ruclips.net/video/u_s_EAKvlDM/видео.html . Bonne écoute et très bon choix musical , IAM sont les derniers poètes des temps modernes. I recommend Mafia K'1 Fry - Pour ceux (K1'Fry stands for Africain or Africaine in verlan.). Considered by some the anthem of French rap. The song is amazing on it's own but the most noteworthy part of it is the video (produced by Kourtrajme). It has become a very big influence on many newer French rappers who sometimes follow a similar pattern in their own music videos. Truly a masterpiece and a must-know if you're interested in french rap as a whole.
