    I think it's absolutely ridiculous that stuff like that can slip through the cracks without being demonetized, when totally wholesome content is being subjected to the " not eligible for monetization" BS.

    A channel should have to apply to be featured as a kids channel. Once approved they are shown. If they fuck up they get removed from kids and are never allowed back.

      @AriasArius 7 лет назад +14

      JamesBacha The only thing I would worry about is someone buying said account and posting videos to it. There’s actually quite a few dead accounts that were hacked and have Elsagate videos now or ones that have 1 popular video, no activity for years then Elsagate videos.

    • @TheSmiddy

      This is the correct solution. It's such a ludicrously simple problem to solve. They can even throw their algorithm at the approval process to cut down on bad actors trying to get through but every channel that gets through should have a person who is accountable for its existence.

      Then the algorithm just lumped anything it thought was "kids-centric" into the mix, like clips of the English dub of Ghost Stories. Because there's no way a cartoon could be for not kids!
      Family entertainment is defaulted to kids, like the Animaniacs songs, ultimately leading to entire playlists being deleted for the crime of being approachable by kids. I get the point of it, but good god, algorithms aren't the all-solution, Google, Jesus H Christmas.

    When I worked as a Wal-mart cashier, I saw these videos daily because parents would just plop an iPad in front of their kids to shut them up for an hour or so while they shopped. I already knew about the actual content in the videos and I would sometimes notify the parent. They were either very shocked as to what their child was watching, or angry with me for "telling them how to raise their kids"
    That's basically what my parents did, they just sat me down in front of the tv and go off to do whatever, but at least Clifford wasn't burying Emily Elizabeth alive and then shitting on her.

      My mom would be furious if my brother and I, or now even our kids, were to watch that type of stuff. We weren't allowed to watch The Simpsons, King of the Hill, any adult swim, or other late night TV shows unless it was Fresh Prince or The Nanny or whatever.
      My response to those who get defensive would be like, "so you're okay with them watching that? You'd rather let an electronic baby sit your kid rather than know what they're doing?" Kids being quiet usually equals them getting into something...

    • @sanichuuu
      @sanichuuu 6 лет назад +52

      I know exactly how that feels. I work at Disney and I get families like you described. While parents looked around and did whatever the kids would be in their strollers glued to an iPad or their parents phones and would look up this garbage. It can range from surprise egg cringe to the joker kidnapping Rapunzel and jabbing a syringe on her hand. The sad part is that I mostly get the “you’re not a parent, you don’t get to tell my child when he can or can’t watch!” bull crap.

    • @HarpsiFizz

      "Grooming videos", riiiiight. Because predators are going to monitor which kids watch the videos and go to those specific kids' houses. I'm trying to convince my girlfriend that it's a bit early to be letting our 2 year old watch RUclips on his own. Some of the content he watches is fine, but then he watches a video of little girls making a mess and screaming and fake crying to get what they want and eating candy nonstop. It's just setting a bad example while he is still emulating the things he watches. I get that it's stressful to never be able to sleep in in the mornings and sometimes you just want to sit him beside you and give him a tablet so you can get a few more minutes of rest, but then you got a kid that incredibly finicky and fake cries? Maybe you should stick to Netflix kids.

      I mean, there are official apps like Nick Jr that kids can use and it’s fine. Even then, download some apps for yourself and play it to figure out if it’s fine. I’m not a parent; but, I have babysat a four-year-old before. Whenever she wanted to go on the YT Kids app i’d keep a close eye on the screen and try to redirect her onto something else when it started showing a single hint of weirdness. Like, we’d take turns playing Fruit Ninja, ‘check on the kitties’ on Neko Atsume, put on a movie, or do something offline. I don’t have an issue with tablets as long as there’s strict monitoring depending in the age.

      I'm a Pedagogic Worker. I've studied kids' cognitive, social and emotional behaviour 3 year long, from the ages 0 to 21 (which is when you, on average stop growing.)
      You can tell your girlfriend that I agree with you. He'll be just as (if not more) entertained by a calm Netflix 'Postman pat" episode. Or DVD's or VHS-tapes. Repetition is no problem. Perhaps a Sesamestreet casette-tape while he plays, is fine as well. Give him a cartboard box to play with or a bucket of water in the garden. An interactive 'play with us and jump' casette or put some small bells on a band around his ankle and let him 'make music' by dancing.
      There's tons of stuff he can do on his own. RUclips will over-stimulate his brain and cause him to act out of frustration and adrenaline. Postman Pat and a nice soft blanket on the couch, is a perfect way to start your morning. Limit the use of an Ipad to 2-times half an hour, if you must (assuming it's a bad case of Ipad-use). Nothing more and preferably less.
      Good luck!

  • @zammmerjammer
    @zammmerjammer 7 лет назад +526

    RUclips should make their kids channel ONLY with channels that have been vetted by actual humans as benign. Then you as the parent can add whatever additional channels you want. Also, there should be some sort of "verified kid-friendly" designation and channels will only get the RUclipsKids seal of approval AFTER being looked at by an actual human being. Maybe even graded a score out of 5 -- this would keep the auto-generated & creepy from floating to the top and would reward content creators who actually put EFFORT and THOUGHT into making quality content for children.
    As it is now, anyone trying to make actual QUALITY kids videos will simply be swamped by some random mishmash of stock animations and annoying music put on repeat because they can just flood RUclips with QUANTITY.

      You may be under the false impression these companies devout a ton of resources to prosecuting, flagging and taking down stuff using their intellectual property.
      They don't.
      It's all automated. And the bots can't tell when an animated bootleg Elsa is being depicted. They specialize in flagging down anything taken directly from the actual movies.
      Actual people have to watch these videos. And since 300 hours of content are uploaded to youtube every minute, that's quite an herculean, boring task. They'd have to hire 54,000 people, each watching 8 hours of video everyday in 3 shifts, to make sure every minute is policed. And that is not including that two people will inevitably watch the same video, that you'd want to have many different opinions on a video before taking it down, vacation days, sick days...
      Though, in December RUclips hired 10,000 people to police these videos.

    But this isn't always on the parent. We don't let our kids use RUclips Kids, because frankly we're experienced with RUclips's algorithm enough to know not to trust it. However, many schools use the app, and allow the kids to watch it without any supervision. So your kids could be watching inappropriate content at school without you even knowing.

Yes weird things can pop up but they're just allowed on RUclips with restrictions, plus we did start them later in age with it, I'd say 6,7. So far they're doing good in school, well like with teachers, peers and respectful to others. No doubt it still is a mystery raising them cause they grow so fast, things change quick but if you have good heart, a good person, you'll have good kids and the internet, even if weird stuff pops up, won't change their good mind and nature I believe. That's my thought n experience so far.

      No it's just parents are too lazy to learn how to either make a playlist and approve the content in the playlist before giving it to their kids or are unknowlegable but still giving their kids access to something they don't understand. Then when this stuff slips by they blame the platform instead of themselves. It isn't just an on off switch for stopping these things slipping through. Even the most advanced neural network in the world would occasionally let one slip through just to test the fringe cases better.

    I stay by the opinion that kids who aren't old enough to endure this kind of stuff shouldn't be allowed to browse RUclips or the internet in general alone. It's nice and all if they want to watch videos online, but then for gods sake have a parent or any adult at all accompany them. Problem solved. There will always be stuff like this, and there's a reason the original RUclips didn't want anyone under 13 (although I think most kids can just laugh over this with 10 years already). If you can't watch your kid all the time it's in front of a tablet (which it shouldn't be anyway...), download some safe vids. Honestly, we managed to survive without constant RUclips input (I sound like a grandmother but I'm only in my late teens too, so it's not a "back in my days" story), the kids of today can do it too.

    I don't like to shame entire generations, but this is just an observation. I'm 20 years old and I feel like the current group of parents of young kids, so like the crowd in their 30's, has a huge lack of responsibility for their kids. Sorry to generalize because it's definitely not everyone and some parents these days are definitely way too protective as well. And it might not be generational, it might be me just becoming aware, but the amount of kids I babysit who spend all their time doing whatever they want on their own personal iPads when they're as young as 3 years old stuns me. Also I'm a lifeguard and literally every day there is some kid who blatantly can't swim in the pool alone or maybe with a one year older sibling and the parents are at the bar or on their phone in a chair not paying attention at all. It's really sad how many times we've had to save kids or help them find lost parents because they don't feel they should have t watch their children and I think using technology as an aid or a babysitter had contributed to that.

    The only reason why I don't completely place blame on the parents is because the app is called RUclips Kids and is aimed, by RUclips, at that demographic.
    That being said, holy crap, if you're going to set an iPad in front of your kid for hours at a time you can at least check in every 15 minutes or so and make sure they aren't looking at softcore porn or violence. Make a goddamn playlist for your kids of content that you have already seen and can trust.
    When I was a kid, we had access to the television while my mom was cooking, cleaning, etc. but she still checked in on us to make sure we were watching child appropriate channels.

      My son, age 6, didn't understand what was happening in the videos and didn't understand why I was being such a "mean mom" for totally locking down RUclips.
      The worst part is when I went back and reviewed the history,... if that one show hadsnt caught my attention Idk how much longer it would have gone on.

      Honestly, how apple convinced everyone "Ipads are educational" is beyond me. We just sort of followed other parents into the trap because everyone does it. Biggest mistake ever. The kids just get addicted to them, and it's all unregulated. At least if you buy kids games in shops, and watch kids shows on TV some regulator has said that's ok. Most of these "educational games" are actually just educating kids how to play freemium games on an ipad and nothing else, and youtube's just an unregualted version of kids TV where half the videos are often made by people I wouldn't trust to babysit my kids at all.
      To be honest though, it's just the addiction. It's so bad, and it comes on so fast. All of a sudden they're begging for ipads, it takes ages to get them off, etc. The negative effect was huge on our kids and it had absolutely no plus side. Some parents have said there's less fights if they each have their own ipad. I just found there were more fights about ipads, and less social kids.

      maybe I am being a little harsh but to me abandoning your kids in front of a screen is lazy parenting.
      As a parent, nothing should be more important to you than your kids well being and success in life, and there are so many alternatives to entertaining and educating a kid than just putting them on the internet. When we are young, we have an extraordinary capacity to learn almost anything because our brains are still fresh in a sense. Give your kids an instrument from an early age (not to early though) and they will play and love it. There are also tons of interesting toys out there that they could use as well. If the screen is really that attractive at least make them play a nice video game (all Nintendos are family friendly). Don't put them in front of a screen doing NOTHING, it numbs their brains. Playing, especially playing videos games and musical instruments, develops their problem-solving abilities, perception and even originality and reflexes.
      When I was younger, that's what my parents did. They worked a lot but they made sure that I would't just be a slave to our screens. As dumb as it may sound I spend more hours playing with legos than watching TV, more hours playing piano than exploring the internet. And even when I was watching TV, especially in the evening, they would be around, often checking if the content was ok and they would even argue over it until I turned 14. My mom was often against any kind of violence on TV while my dad was like "but it's fun, honey!" 😅
      (come on my mom, Naruto isn't THAT violent!!! It's just kids learning how to fight enemies of their village, but you make it sound bad, like GAAAAWDD you are always exaggerating everything!)

      I'm a millennial born around 2000 I grew up when this stuff was coming in smartphones, Ipads etc, Now from experience I was left mostly unregulated by my parents who have no idea how to use pretty much anything other than a TV. That being said I came out mostly unscathed because for a long time I didn't have a tablet(still don't and I don't want a tablet I didn't even get a phone till I was 16) the electronic I used most was my gaming console Xbox 360 and my DS's that being said I had an iPod touch and when I started coming on RUclips it was far less political and a far safer place for viewing videos because I would mostly find stuff like Smosh and other let's play channels but the video landscape has changed drasticly now.
      Let's plays are probably the safer videos for kids to watch since most let's players are aware kids watch them and try to keep it moderately PG Yogscast would be a good example of a child-friendly let's play channel.
      My suggestion for this day and age would be to keep smartphones and tablets away from your kids like the plague, clarification don't outright ban them from using one if they go to a friends house and their friend has one but you stop them from using it or kick up a storm that's guaranteed to cause problems just don't buy them a smartphone and/or tablet because they are probably the most socially damaging things for children because of things like social media(which I barely use don't see much point in it). It can suck for a kid to be left out but I think the benefits from it are well worth it and get them something like a 3DS or a console because they are far less damaging but don't throw them head first into a PC or laptop that could be way, way worse than a tablet for different reasons.
      Now consoles and handhelds have RUclips but it's a bit harder and annoying to use so kids probably won't try too hard to use RUclips and games usually don't have damaging content unless it's PC games because they can be messed up but most things on steam are somewhat okay for kids if you get a kid a computer do it when they're about 10(maybe older this was about when I got mine but things were far tamer) because that's when it's kind of necessary just outfit their browsers with ad blockers, pop-up blocker, and site raters to help avoid any messy situations you could put safe search on but I probably wouldn't since I think exploring at their own pace is important then again things may have changed from when I started.
      I would recommend getting kids a smartphone or tablet at around maybe 12-14 (maybe older this is just around when I got mine) depends on the kid but don't restrict their access they shouldn't search anything too messed up and will likely use it to find gaming videos if they're into games. That being said this is from the perspective of a gamer if your child doesn't like games that may be more challanging since I guess they might search for comedy videos and I have absolutly no Idea what a child looking for comedy might find.
      This is all my opinion and from expirence growing up in this age.

    Being born in generation Z, i have grown up with the presence of youtube at a very young age. In 2007, there were MS paint drawings of the harry potter puppet pals that showed Hermione half naked and explicit content of this level that i would watch as an 8 year old when they came up as recommended videos. When I was 9, my friend showed me Britney Spear's 'Toxic' music video, then we found and watched stripteases on the youtube. When i was 11, my best friend showed me that if you typed in a girl's first name followed by "hot" on google images, lingerie models and pornstars would come up. The internet is a place that i can assure you, kids will never be able to be fully protected. Sexuality has become apart of the foundation of marketing for both selling products that have nothing to do with sex, to plainly generating revenue off sexually explicit content itself. The only way you can hope to protect you kids from seeing this on the internet, is to keep them off of the internet, plain and simple. You cannot trust a platform that allows individuals and groups to post any content they want without regulation for every video, and think that all content can be kid-safe, it's stupid to think that RUclips for kids can work as innocently. What im trying to say is, kids cannot be protected on this platform in this era and current development of the internet, not without it being regulated by people themselves, physically.
    However, all this being said, i still haven't found that the videos and images that i saw have affected me in the way of wanting to demonstrate or replicate what i saw, nor has it made my brain less 'sane' than any other generation's kids. i acknowledge that i was 8 when this whole thing started and not as impressionable as a 3-6 year old, but if you think about it, children's media has been fucked up for years, how is this any different? Innuendos in children's movies, pop music about sex, disturbing 1920-30s cartoons, sexually driven advertisements, it's all still there. I feel like this debate requires numerous of factors to be considered: what affect kids? when does it affect kids? how do we prevent it from affecting the cognitive and behavioural development of children? how to still allow kids to develop technical skills, explore the wonder of the internet and consume to good stuff to survive in this technologically driven world?

      Sophie well I've had similar experiences when I was a kid but honestly that's only part of the problem. The other part is that parents nowadays don't even comfort their kids they just use screens for that. Just spend 10 mins with them and they'll be fine.
      I volunteered at a summer camp where we took care of children and 3 of them literally had ipads in their bags. The other kids would crowd around them and just stare until the counselor took them away. Those same kids are the ones who screamed and cried without their tech.
      They were also terribly violent and one kid even bit another one over a stick. A STICK.
      Obviously no one cared for them at home and they'll probably grow up to be those racist squeakers you see playing call of duty.

    This is a problem I've been thinking about since I have younger siblings. But beyond just the creepiness of so many videos, I honestly find so many other videos rather sad. A lot of them are vlogs with younger kids in it, and they tend to just be loud and obnoxious kids. On top of that, there is absolutely nothing informative about it. I remember as a kid being able to watch television shows that were designed for kids to actually help them think and get skills: Mighty Machines, Magic School bus, Blues Clues, etc. These youtube videos offer nothing informative whatsoever, and don't actually build any interests for the kids.

  • @DanicaDeCosto

    They need to have actual human beings watch the videos for youtube kids. Creators could have a little box to check to enable their video for youtube kids, and then it should go to review. I've had videos that aren't for kids pop up on youtube kids. This is not right. Parents should not have to flag videos. Once they flag a video, that means their kid already saw it. We need to keep RUclips for ages 13 and up and RUclips kids for the 0-12 range. Also...Superheroes are not just for kids. I think adults should be able to do funny parodies of superheroes and have it not pop up on the kids app. If you had to check a box saying it was meant for kids, then this would help a lot. And if you try to check a box and someone reviews it and it's not appropriate, then you don't get to be on youtube kids. It seems like this would be an easier fix than trying to go through all the videos on the main youtube. And yea...parents need to monitor what their kids watch but everything should be safe on youtube kids.

    Love people saying that they weren't allowed to use Internet until they were X years old and that it should be a solution.
    Does no one realize that in our generation Internet wasn't simply everywhere as it is today? It was easy to keep kids away. How can you act like smartypants when it's *actually our generation, generation of people commenting here, living in the Internet life* who children follow? Times change whether we like it or not, and it's time to fight the problem, not only to buzz about how it was when you were young. Of course, parental control is crucial, but we have to acknowledge that big part of our life went online and kids are humans - and they will always go where we go.

    I'm intrigued that #Elsagate took so long to pop up. This was an issue almost two years ago, if not longer. Also, don't just put your kids in front of an iPad instead of taking care of them! You have an obligation to fulfill!

      Jay Pardoe I'm an adult without children and I've known about this for a couple years now as well. Parents should be at least monitoring what their kids are watching, they don't have to watch the cartoons themselves. (Even though extra sweet parents like Phil here take the time to watch with his kid as he says here.)

      Why are you surprised? Most people still think that #pizzagate is focused on a random pizza shop in D.C. where babies are raped and tortured to death. They refuse to see the bigger picture- although I think we're seeing the cracks in the dam beginning to form with all the sexual deviants in Hollywood starting to get accused. I'm hoping someone like Spacey fucking sings like a canary and blows the lid off the elaborate blackmail/human trafficking ring that was discovered from the Podesta emails.

      Sierra Blake That is less of a problem since if they have limited YT to begin with, they’ll only search up what interests them in the limited time they get online, like reading about bugs or some shit during school. My point being make sure your kid doesn’t get interested in this trash and the rest will fall into place.

    While I do think these videos are awful and seeing how they are still seen through RUclips kids is awful. I would like to say that while I was kid, I was almost NEVER on the computer and almost ALWAYS outside having fun like a normal child. I think too many parents use the internet and TV as a glorified babysitter and it has to stop.

    • @lb1203
      @lb1203 6 лет назад +27

    • @lourdespacheco3700
      @lourdespacheco3700 6 лет назад +18

      I agree ! They should let their children have some fun at the park or with other neighbor kids, go to the library and read books ! And not have them on the internet just to shut them up ! It's time for those parents to start learning there are other ways to keep a kid entertained maybe they should sit down with their kids and tell them stories or put a movie they liked when they were a child, enough of letting them be unsupervised!

    • @lb1203
      @lb1203 6 лет назад +21

      I totally agree. And to be fair it's totally ok to give them short amounts of internet time. I'm not against it completely. It's just when it becomes the babysitter and when they dont supervise their time on it that I have a problem. Especially as the kid gets older and they learn how to use the devices better, who knows what websites they could end up on. Just not safe!

    Preach Phil. RUclips hides behind their algorithm a lot. That said, it's hard to build an automated system to screen every submission, especially those outliers meant to trick the algorithm which a billion hours of video flow through. It's impossible to build a fool proof algorithm to automatically judge content on the Internet, unless you use machine learning. This should continually improve.
    That said, I have a niece that I'd take a bullet for. I will not allow her to watch RUclips without occasionally checking in on what she's watching with a quizzical eye. Ethan from h3 led me to my own investigation, and PhillyD - you just lit up a bunch of parents and caregivers who actually care. You just stopped at least thousands of hours of kids being traumatized. Bless you, brother.
    Keep fighting the good fight.

    As a mother of three, I don't let my youngest use RUclips. I don't trust their algorithms and there are lots of other apps that have more kid friendly content, like Netflix in kid mode. I'm beginning to hate Paw Patrol, my youngest loves it and the theme song might be stuck in my head for the rest of my life.
    I think it's the parents' resposibility to monitor their childrens internet use. As a parent, you must get to know the apps and sites your children are using. My 13 yo is gradually getting access to everything he wants to see from the net, but my 3 yo has very limited access to content.

We'll talk to that pesky algorithm for you." Its just a tired response to their inability to better control the leviathan they created. They have become a completely reactionary company and aren't held accountable because we all know no one will do anything to them.

    I think RUclips should have these modes for the website: G,PG or R, etc. Therefore, kids can only watch acceptable contents in 'PG mode' on RUclips. And it is the publishers' responsibilities to rate their videos before they post them. R content can only appear on 'R mode' RUclips. Audiences can also report inappropriate contents not appearing in its matching mode.

      Interacting with the community is vitally important to keeping Philly non-biased. If he says something biased, or lies to push a narrtive, he will end up facing the backlash from his community. Then, he will have to explain his side more thoroughly, or admit he was being too biased. That is what keeps him unique. CNN and FOX will never be accountable for anything they do. Phil is.
