I think it's absolutely ridiculous that stuff like that can slip through the cracks without being demonetized, when totally wholesome content is being subjected to the " not eligible for monetization" BS.
H3H3 did a video on this like a year ago! Maybe even longer. RUclips doesn't watch their own shit. I get don't get high on your own supply but you gotta test the product to make sure it's pure.
That's the system you're signing up to. It is exploitable. Until one day when we have good enough software to get closer to being 100% correct, which will take atleast a few years.
A channel should have to apply to be featured as a kids channel. Once approved they are shown. If they fuck up they get removed from kids and are never allowed back.
I thought that this was how they did it in the first place- it’s the only sensible way to do it though. I hope they start doing this- that they do a whole entire overhaul.
JamesBacha The only thing I would worry about is someone buying said account and posting videos to it. There’s actually quite a few dead accounts that were hacked and have Elsagate videos now or ones that have 1 popular video, no activity for years then Elsagate videos.
This is the correct solution. It's such a ludicrously simple problem to solve. They can even throw their algorithm at the approval process to cut down on bad actors trying to get through but every channel that gets through should have a person who is accountable for its existence.
Then the algorithm just lumped anything it thought was "kids-centric" into the mix, like clips of the English dub of Ghost Stories. Because there's no way a cartoon could be for not kids! Family entertainment is defaulted to kids, like the Animaniacs songs, ultimately leading to entire playlists being deleted for the crime of being approachable by kids. I get the point of it, but good god, algorithms aren't the all-solution, Google, Jesus H Christmas.
When I worked as a Wal-mart cashier, I saw these videos daily because parents would just plop an iPad in front of their kids to shut them up for an hour or so while they shopped. I already knew about the actual content in the videos and I would sometimes notify the parent. They were either very shocked as to what their child was watching, or angry with me for "telling them how to raise their kids" That's basically what my parents did, they just sat me down in front of the tv and go off to do whatever, but at least Clifford wasn't burying Emily Elizabeth alive and then shitting on her.
Rainbow-Unicorn-Teaparty. really though. My parents plopped me in front of the tv as well, but I was usually watching G to PG content. The worst I ever watched was a few episodes of The Simpsons.
My mom would be furious if my brother and I, or now even our kids, were to watch that type of stuff. We weren't allowed to watch The Simpsons, King of the Hill, any adult swim, or other late night TV shows unless it was Fresh Prince or The Nanny or whatever. My response to those who get defensive would be like, "so you're okay with them watching that? You'd rather let an electronic baby sit your kid rather than know what they're doing?" Kids being quiet usually equals them getting into something...
I know exactly how that feels. I work at Disney and I get families like you described. While parents looked around and did whatever the kids would be in their strollers glued to an iPad or their parents phones and would look up this garbage. It can range from surprise egg cringe to the joker kidnapping Rapunzel and jabbing a syringe on her hand. The sad part is that I mostly get the “you’re not a parent, you don’t get to tell my child when he can or can’t watch!” bull crap.
It sucks that actual family friendly youtubers are getting demonetized, while these seemingly innocent children’s videos are earning millions of views/money and slipping through the cracks.
When I heard that RUclips was making an app for kids I assumed it would only contain pre-screened content. Who in their right minds would think that with our current level of technology it'd be ok for a computer to decide what children can watch?
DigitalImpostor We downloaded RUclips Kids and by evening it was uninstalled. My oldest was decent at managing what to watch, but my little one was off in strange stuff waaasy too fast.
The elsa gate subreddit (while sometimes being over the top) is very informative on how bad this stuff is getting, pretty creepy when you realize most of these are grooming videos.
"Grooming videos", riiiiight. Because predators are going to monitor which kids watch the videos and go to those specific kids' houses. You may now remove your tin foil hat; your brains have been cooked to a nice consistency and are ready to be served with braised carrots and a side of potatoes.
HarpsiFizz it's not about targeting specific children, it's about normalising behaviour that is clearly predetory in nature. The more children familiar with it, the easier it is to get close to individual children.
Genevieve and Kenji, HarpsiFizz already spoke about tin foil hats so obviously he's very smart and knows everything without even having to bother to think things through.
I wasn't aware of this but this is very scary. This seems like a huge issue. Based on the demonetization issues recently, I imagine RUclips's algorithm isn't going to fix this.
I am amazing it didnt come up sooner. Pewdiepie, LeafyisHere and many others did videos about it about a year ago. Thought there was already enough awareness around it
The issue is not really the monetization of the videos. The real issue is the fact that this looks like an orchestrated campaign aimed at young children.
Putting a password won’t do anything, it will only prevent them from signing into a RUclips account. They’re still able to watch videos even if they don’t have an account.
I didn't even know about this(I don't have kids)...it's utterly disgusting and RUclips needs to be more vigilant and not let children be able to view this stuff...let kids be kids for god's sake,sheesh.....
When I was little, my dad told me to "never get online without permission because there are things on the internet that will stay in your brain, things like people's heads being cut off and stuff that will give you nightmares for many, many years!" This happened before RUclips was a thing, so it is up to the parents to tell kids that they can't do that alone. Watch the videos with your kids and never leave them alone in front of a computer screen.
But the whole thing now is kids have SO many ways to get online, not just at a computer. And you cannot ALWAYS be on top of your kid. Parents should be able to trust youtubekids to not be THIS HORRIBLE!
hoffy1138 Agreed that it is the parents responsibility to protect the kids, but that does not excuse RUclips's responsibility to deliver content in line with the "safe for kids" ideal which people are clearly agreeing they have failed to do.
Not going to lie, because of the internet, it opened up my mind that politics and media tries to hide from the common people. So, because of that, and knowing specific people who do such things -- you go and realize how much bullshit and evil are in this world. Especially politics.
So somehow this slips past RUclips's radar and gets put in front of kids, yet people that make meaningful content that are the reason behind RUclips's growth and development get demonetized and punished for swearing
stalewich Maybe they've been running 2 algorithms. Only they used the wrong ones on the wrong thing. The children's in the main and the main on the children's. XD
Or charity videos are demonitized for mentioning disasters, or news and important video evidence is removed from the site for showing bad content, meanwhile "Elsa gives hulk a blowjob" goes unnoticed
I'm trying to convince my girlfriend that it's a bit early to be letting our 2 year old watch RUclips on his own. Some of the content he watches is fine, but then he watches a video of little girls making a mess and screaming and fake crying to get what they want and eating candy nonstop. It's just setting a bad example while he is still emulating the things he watches. I get that it's stressful to never be able to sleep in in the mornings and sometimes you just want to sit him beside you and give him a tablet so you can get a few more minutes of rest, but then you got a kid that incredibly finicky and fake cries? Maybe you should stick to Netflix kids.
I mean, there are official apps like Nick Jr that kids can use and it’s fine. Even then, download some apps for yourself and play it to figure out if it’s fine. I’m not a parent; but, I have babysat a four-year-old before. Whenever she wanted to go on the YT Kids app i’d keep a close eye on the screen and try to redirect her onto something else when it started showing a single hint of weirdness. Like, we’d take turns playing Fruit Ninja, ‘check on the kitties’ on Neko Atsume, put on a movie, or do something offline. I don’t have an issue with tablets as long as there’s strict monitoring depending in the age.
+Glacius I'm a Pedagogic Worker. I've studied kids' cognitive, social and emotional behaviour 3 year long, from the ages 0 to 21 (which is when you, on average stop growing.) You can tell your girlfriend that I agree with you. He'll be just as (if not more) entertained by a calm Netflix 'Postman pat" episode. Or DVD's or VHS-tapes. Repetition is no problem. Perhaps a Sesamestreet casette-tape while he plays, is fine as well. Give him a cartboard box to play with or a bucket of water in the garden. An interactive 'play with us and jump' casette or put some small bells on a band around his ankle and let him 'make music' by dancing. There's tons of stuff he can do on his own. RUclips will over-stimulate his brain and cause him to act out of frustration and adrenaline. Postman Pat and a nice soft blanket on the couch, is a perfect way to start your morning. Limit the use of an Ipad to 2-times half an hour, if you must (assuming it's a bad case of Ipad-use). Nothing more and preferably less. Good luck!
Maybe you should download one of those apps where someone will read a picture book to him. Reading is good for children and shouldn't have the RUclips algorithm problem.
RUclips should make their kids channel ONLY with channels that have been vetted by actual humans as benign. Then you as the parent can add whatever additional channels you want. Also, there should be some sort of "verified kid-friendly" designation and channels will only get the RUclipsKids seal of approval AFTER being looked at by an actual human being. Maybe even graded a score out of 5 -- this would keep the auto-generated & creepy from floating to the top and would reward content creators who actually put EFFORT and THOUGHT into making quality content for children. As it is now, anyone trying to make actual QUALITY kids videos will simply be swamped by some random mishmash of stock animations and annoying music put on repeat because they can just flood RUclips with QUANTITY.
It’s sickening to think how disturbed children will be by seeing some of their favourite characters in such sadistic situations. I really this could be traumatising a younger generation and it makes me scared for parents.
The clip from 4:20 My little sister was watching that on my iPod (she’s 4) and when she watched that part she was freaking and out and crying out for our mom and she was just bawling due to the fact my little sister was In an car accident with my mom like almost a year ago and it made me cry the fact she still remember that. I didn’t expect the video to have any of that but I don’t want to ruin my sister mentality. Fuck these people.
So whatever it's educational videos about catching mice humane, it get demonized. Watching a horror related video with warnings posted in the beginning, demonized. "Kids" channels with graphic images of violence & sex. Bling-bling! $$$$ 😑😑😑😑
Lunerian Do you mean "if you try hard enough you can find youtube on the internet" or "if you try hard enough you can find anything ON youtube"? Your comment is confusing
Michelle Yang daddy o five is back, the disfunctional abusive family that blamed Phil for everything Yea RUclips doesn't care about them being back, and still abusing children
Why don’t these companies that own these characters, and their copyrights just take down these videos like they do with tons of other content for no reason?
EMoloneyC Well the more they strike, the less likely imitators might spring up as they'd be under the pressure of being suddenly banned without warning.
You may be under the false impression these companies devout a ton of resources to prosecuting, flagging and taking down stuff using their intellectual property. They don't. It's all automated. And the bots can't tell when an animated bootleg Elsa is being depicted. They specialize in flagging down anything taken directly from the actual movies. Actual people have to watch these videos. And since 300 hours of content are uploaded to youtube every minute, that's quite an herculean, boring task. They'd have to hire 54,000 people, each watching 8 hours of video everyday in 3 shifts, to make sure every minute is policed. And that is not including that two people will inevitably watch the same video, that you'd want to have many different opinions on a video before taking it down, vacation days, sick days... Though, in December RUclips hired 10,000 people to police these videos.
To be fair, I've watched a couple of Paw Patrol episodes with my younger brother. I even remember watching the first aired episode on the day the show came out. I think it's a really good show for kids and after seeing all the completely fucked up videos depicting these fun loving characters as... well... fucked up I can say the world will do even more than anything to get money. I feel really sorry for the people in the videos, lets hope they get the help they need.
oBLACKIECHANoo parody is one thing but labeled for kids isn't quite right. Example labeling porn as sex education for kids, or showing a murder of some one such as burning a homeless guy as a teaching tool for young kids in some way. Just saying.
I am surprised this is so far down - first thing that I thought of - these are the Bradbury brothers!!!! I am Effan Bradbury! I would say though, Difranco is putting a good spin on this. It will be good for H3H3 and the whole RUclips community if Google puts some human eyes on the highly watched content. More importantly, audits that provide algorithmic feedback to the system and improve AI. That is extra investment, but likely well spent....
I've also seen videos from other youtubers talking about this too, this was not a secret, not even remotely. There is a massive market for videos among kids. Really pathetic that advertisers all got so upset over some random video of hate speech but did crap when it came to the horribly inappropriate advertising.
I had no idea about this until I started watching my nieces more often. The shit they watch on RUclips is shocking... at all age ranges. The 3 year old was watching an animation of Spider Man and Elsa having a baby the other day and the 9 year old was watching Jake Paul. I don't want to live in this world anymore.
But this isn't always on the parent. We don't let our kids use RUclips Kids, because frankly we're experienced with RUclips's algorithm enough to know not to trust it. However, many schools use the app, and allow the kids to watch it without any supervision. So your kids could be watching inappropriate content at school without you even knowing.
Damien Martinez Did you even read what I wrote? It's not part of the curriculum. The schools just give the kids access to tablets and let them watch videos on RUclips Kids if they finish all their work. How could RUclips be part of the curriculum?
Dude, that went out the window with the Millennials. Being in grade school around 2001 put an end to that sort of system. I was one of the last classes that got to see decent shows about educational stuff like Bill Nye and shit.
Whatever happened to RUclips being for ages 13 and up??? It's false advertising on RUclips's part to claim they can make the site kid-friendly and asinine that because they can't, they try and force stupid unclear rules on everyone. The internet is barely for kids in the first place. Stop trying to pretend it is.
Andy Brice exactly, and since youtube kids isnt even safe for kids at all it's false advertising on their part. If it's impossible to 100% ensure it's safe for kids it shouldn't exist at all tbh.
Scribbles Scribbles I agree with you, but most parents are clueless about this kind of thing. The majority of the parents of young children that I’ve babysat have allowed their children to freely roam around RUclips. It’s really shocking and terrible what children can stumble upon on this website.
Yeah but they could also try this revolutionary thing called parenting! Don't get me wrong I'm not calling anyone a bad parent! But apps do not and *cannot* replace a mother or father minding their children!! NOTHING will ever replace parents who watch what their little ones are watching (or doing) online!
Apparently its got to do with trying to normalize this behaviour to kids so its easier to exploit them, lots of these types of videos (especially ones that feature child actors crying / screaming / being "pranked" in the shower) have many pedophilic comments
Kids are inherently interested in weird shit. They're curious about things. These channels exploit that to the maximum by showing them the most disturbing things possible.
A few months ago when I was still talking to my sister I warned her about these issues. I was horrified to find out that my 5 y/o niece that i care so much for was given free reign on her tablet during "tablet time." I saw she was watching borderline dirty elsa shows and clicked from video to video in recommended. My niece had no real idea what was going on in the videos, but that wont last forever. Honestly children that age shouldn't be deceived into watching this content by believing its more innocent. Its purely disgusting.
RUclips is so full of shit. It's funny. My little niece loves watching RUclips. Her mother switched her to YouTub Kids or, whatever it is, and suddenly these creepily sexy screaming videos start showing up out of nowhere. So her dad gets her back to regular RUclips and it's all Sesame Street, etc. What the actual fuck??
i remember me and my friends reported these channels and videos(i bet others did) already and yet youtube is doing something now? after a whole year?seems suspicious to me.
Guys youtube is taking a cut whenever ads are played. Is it really a surprise that they don't want to shine light one of their most profitable sections on the platform? :)
Rules, laws, banhammers, they're for enemies of power, not for whatever purpose they're presented as. They are really damn quick to ban Forgotten Weapons, a harmless historical gun channel, and banned all of Thegn Thrand over a dumb video they made years ago, because those are things they care about. But extremely inappropriate cartoons aimed at toddlers? No real effect on anything youtube cares about, so they take their time.
Not a parent, but I don't understand why the youtube kids app doesn't have a way for the parent to block all channels and then whitelist channels they think would be appropriate for their kids to watch, because I would not trust youtube's algorithm to decide what is and isn't appropriate for my children. I also think it would be nice if you were able to put time limits on use.
Heavenly Athena They don’t care. Many people have complained about it and has gotten media attention (on RUclips). Of course the news media won’t talk about it because they want you to think it’s just another one of those crazy conspiracy theories.
spritz Berry yes you can, my kids are 10 and 7, daughter and son. You raise your kids in the right direction, you can let them on the internet. We have and they're doing good. Yes weird things can pop up but they're just allowed on RUclips with restrictions, plus we did start them later in age with it, I'd say 6,7. So far they're doing good in school, well like with teachers, peers and respectful to others. No doubt it still is a mystery raising them cause they grow so fast, things change quick but if you have good heart, a good person, you'll have good kids and the internet, even if weird stuff pops up, won't change their good mind and nature I believe. That's my thought n experience so far.
No it's just parents are too lazy to learn how to either make a playlist and approve the content in the playlist before giving it to their kids or are unknowlegable but still giving their kids access to something they don't understand. Then when this stuff slips by they blame the platform instead of themselves. It isn't just an on off switch for stopping these things slipping through. Even the most advanced neural network in the world would occasionally let one slip through just to test the fringe cases better.
"Even the most advanced neural network in the world would occasionally let one slip through just to test the fringe cases better." Test case: don't think of a white bear.
I stay by the opinion that kids who aren't old enough to endure this kind of stuff shouldn't be allowed to browse RUclips or the internet in general alone. It's nice and all if they want to watch videos online, but then for gods sake have a parent or any adult at all accompany them. Problem solved. There will always be stuff like this, and there's a reason the original RUclips didn't want anyone under 13 (although I think most kids can just laugh over this with 10 years already). If you can't watch your kid all the time it's in front of a tablet (which it shouldn't be anyway...), download some safe vids. Honestly, we managed to survive without constant RUclips input (I sound like a grandmother but I'm only in my late teens too, so it's not a "back in my days" story), the kids of today can do it too.
I don't like to shame entire generations, but this is just an observation. I'm 20 years old and I feel like the current group of parents of young kids, so like the crowd in their 30's, has a huge lack of responsibility for their kids. Sorry to generalize because it's definitely not everyone and some parents these days are definitely way too protective as well. And it might not be generational, it might be me just becoming aware, but the amount of kids I babysit who spend all their time doing whatever they want on their own personal iPads when they're as young as 3 years old stuns me. Also I'm a lifeguard and literally every day there is some kid who blatantly can't swim in the pool alone or maybe with a one year older sibling and the parents are at the bar or on their phone in a chair not paying attention at all. It's really sad how many times we've had to save kids or help them find lost parents because they don't feel they should have t watch their children and I think using technology as an aid or a babysitter had contributed to that.
amberfirexx9 Jesus? Kids can't fucking swim? When i was 6 year old i almost drown, after that i my parents take me swimming lessons. My child was youtube poops and early 2006-2010 youtube.
+Obvious Troll. Yet you still got baited. Congrats I was pretty surprised during a swimming unit in PE in high school that some of my classmates didn't know how to swim, especially in California. When I have kids, I'm going to teach them how swim as early as possible, just like my parents did with me...
So, wait, this is a specific app from RUclips called 'RUclips Kids'? It seems reasonable that parents would assume this is something properly curated and not expect it to require supervision. Wtf is even the point of it if it isn't?
As a kids page I’ve requested the video so many times. Thank you so much! Please please look into the videos that are obviously abducted girls forced to do gymnastics and model clothing 😔
I've seen something like that on youtube but I don't remember the channel it was from. I hope this comment gets seen and somebody like Phil speaks out about it;; ♥
You know what is strange? the majority of these videos shows supposedly copyrighted content with no hassle, and most of the videos also indirectly sponsor some kind of product.
The only reason why I don't completely place blame on the parents is because the app is called RUclips Kids and is aimed, by RUclips, at that demographic. That being said, holy crap, if you're going to set an iPad in front of your kid for hours at a time you can at least check in every 15 minutes or so and make sure they aren't looking at softcore porn or violence. Make a goddamn playlist for your kids of content that you have already seen and can trust. When I was a kid, we had access to the television while my mom was cooking, cleaning, etc. but she still checked in on us to make sure we were watching child appropriate channels.
Kivan This is exactly what happened in our family. I would let my son watch children's mine craft videos while I cook. I heard crazy noises and came in and saw mine craft porn (weirdly violent minecraft porn. But everyone was happy?) My son, age 6, didn't understand what was happening in the videos and didn't understand why I was being such a "mean mom" for totally locking down RUclips. The worst part is when I went back and reviewed the history,... if that one show hadsnt caught my attention Idk how much longer it would have gone on. Mind you I don't cook super elaborate meals. 30-40 mins I was sick to my stomach We as parents can't become complacent! Nothing is "safe" unless we are there with him
Honestly, how apple convinced everyone "Ipads are educational" is beyond me. We just sort of followed other parents into the trap because everyone does it. Biggest mistake ever. The kids just get addicted to them, and it's all unregulated. At least if you buy kids games in shops, and watch kids shows on TV some regulator has said that's ok. Most of these "educational games" are actually just educating kids how to play freemium games on an ipad and nothing else, and youtube's just an unregualted version of kids TV where half the videos are often made by people I wouldn't trust to babysit my kids at all. To be honest though, it's just the addiction. It's so bad, and it comes on so fast. All of a sudden they're begging for ipads, it takes ages to get them off, etc. The negative effect was huge on our kids and it had absolutely no plus side. Some parents have said there's less fights if they each have their own ipad. I just found there were more fights about ipads, and less social kids.
This happened to me not so long ago. My little sister fell asleep with her tablet and like usually I go through her RUclips history and I found this one video she was on called "Sims love story" and I was thinking to myself "hm... seems okay..." Oh my god I could not be anymore worse! I fastfowars to the middle and these Sims where NOT being PG 13!!! No matter how safe people can be, slimy snakes will always find a way to show their videos...
maybe I am being a little harsh but to me abandoning your kids in front of a screen is lazy parenting. As a parent, nothing should be more important to you than your kids well being and success in life, and there are so many alternatives to entertaining and educating a kid than just putting them on the internet. When we are young, we have an extraordinary capacity to learn almost anything because our brains are still fresh in a sense. Give your kids an instrument from an early age (not to early though) and they will play and love it. There are also tons of interesting toys out there that they could use as well. If the screen is really that attractive at least make them play a nice video game (all Nintendos are family friendly). Don't put them in front of a screen doing NOTHING, it numbs their brains. Playing, especially playing videos games and musical instruments, develops their problem-solving abilities, perception and even originality and reflexes. When I was younger, that's what my parents did. They worked a lot but they made sure that I would't just be a slave to our screens. As dumb as it may sound I spend more hours playing with legos than watching TV, more hours playing piano than exploring the internet. And even when I was watching TV, especially in the evening, they would be around, often checking if the content was ok and they would even argue over it until I turned 14. My mom was often against any kind of violence on TV while my dad was like "but it's fun, honey!" 😅 (come on my mom, Naruto isn't THAT violent!!! It's just kids learning how to fight enemies of their village, but you make it sound bad, like GAAAAWDD you are always exaggerating everything!)
I'm a millennial born around 2000 I grew up when this stuff was coming in smartphones, Ipads etc, Now from experience I was left mostly unregulated by my parents who have no idea how to use pretty much anything other than a TV. That being said I came out mostly unscathed because for a long time I didn't have a tablet(still don't and I don't want a tablet I didn't even get a phone till I was 16) the electronic I used most was my gaming console Xbox 360 and my DS's that being said I had an iPod touch and when I started coming on RUclips it was far less political and a far safer place for viewing videos because I would mostly find stuff like Smosh and other let's play channels but the video landscape has changed drasticly now. Let's plays are probably the safer videos for kids to watch since most let's players are aware kids watch them and try to keep it moderately PG Yogscast would be a good example of a child-friendly let's play channel. My suggestion for this day and age would be to keep smartphones and tablets away from your kids like the plague, clarification don't outright ban them from using one if they go to a friends house and their friend has one but you stop them from using it or kick up a storm that's guaranteed to cause problems just don't buy them a smartphone and/or tablet because they are probably the most socially damaging things for children because of things like social media(which I barely use don't see much point in it). It can suck for a kid to be left out but I think the benefits from it are well worth it and get them something like a 3DS or a console because they are far less damaging but don't throw them head first into a PC or laptop that could be way, way worse than a tablet for different reasons. Now consoles and handhelds have RUclips but it's a bit harder and annoying to use so kids probably won't try too hard to use RUclips and games usually don't have damaging content unless it's PC games because they can be messed up but most things on steam are somewhat okay for kids if you get a kid a computer do it when they're about 10(maybe older this was about when I got mine but things were far tamer) because that's when it's kind of necessary just outfit their browsers with ad blockers, pop-up blocker, and site raters to help avoid any messy situations you could put safe search on but I probably wouldn't since I think exploring at their own pace is important then again things may have changed from when I started. I would recommend getting kids a smartphone or tablet at around maybe 12-14 (maybe older this is just around when I got mine) depends on the kid but don't restrict their access they shouldn't search anything too messed up and will likely use it to find gaming videos if they're into games. That being said this is from the perspective of a gamer if your child doesn't like games that may be more challanging since I guess they might search for comedy videos and I have absolutly no Idea what a child looking for comedy might find. This is all my opinion and from expirence growing up in this age.
Being born in generation Z, i have grown up with the presence of youtube at a very young age. In 2007, there were MS paint drawings of the harry potter puppet pals that showed Hermione half naked and explicit content of this level that i would watch as an 8 year old when they came up as recommended videos. When I was 9, my friend showed me Britney Spear's 'Toxic' music video, then we found and watched stripteases on the youtube. When i was 11, my best friend showed me that if you typed in a girl's first name followed by "hot" on google images, lingerie models and pornstars would come up. The internet is a place that i can assure you, kids will never be able to be fully protected. Sexuality has become apart of the foundation of marketing for both selling products that have nothing to do with sex, to plainly generating revenue off sexually explicit content itself. The only way you can hope to protect you kids from seeing this on the internet, is to keep them off of the internet, plain and simple. You cannot trust a platform that allows individuals and groups to post any content they want without regulation for every video, and think that all content can be kid-safe, it's stupid to think that RUclips for kids can work as innocently. What im trying to say is, kids cannot be protected on this platform in this era and current development of the internet, not without it being regulated by people themselves, physically. However, all this being said, i still haven't found that the videos and images that i saw have affected me in the way of wanting to demonstrate or replicate what i saw, nor has it made my brain less 'sane' than any other generation's kids. i acknowledge that i was 8 when this whole thing started and not as impressionable as a 3-6 year old, but if you think about it, children's media has been fucked up for years, how is this any different? Innuendos in children's movies, pop music about sex, disturbing 1920-30s cartoons, sexually driven advertisements, it's all still there. I feel like this debate requires numerous of factors to be considered: what affect kids? when does it affect kids? how do we prevent it from affecting the cognitive and behavioural development of children? how to still allow kids to develop technical skills, explore the wonder of the internet and consume to good stuff to survive in this technologically driven world?
Sophie well I've had similar experiences when I was a kid but honestly that's only part of the problem. The other part is that parents nowadays don't even comfort their kids they just use screens for that. Just spend 10 mins with them and they'll be fine. I volunteered at a summer camp where we took care of children and 3 of them literally had ipads in their bags. The other kids would crowd around them and just stare until the counselor took them away. Those same kids are the ones who screamed and cried without their tech. They were also terribly violent and one kid even bit another one over a stick. A STICK. Obviously no one cared for them at home and they'll probably grow up to be those racist squeakers you see playing call of duty.
Having grown up on Looney Tunes, I can assure you, laughing at Elmer Fudd getting hit by a sledge hammer is not the same thing as watching a real person get hit with one.
When RUclips first started, I was 4 years old. My dad never let me watch it until I was 10. He told me that some there was some stuff on there that wasn't for kids. But I'm pretty sure that whatever was on RUclips in 2005 and 2010 was nothing compared to what's on RUclips now.
This is a problem I've been thinking about since I have younger siblings. But beyond just the creepiness of so many videos, I honestly find so many other videos rather sad. A lot of them are vlogs with younger kids in it, and they tend to just be loud and obnoxious kids. On top of that, there is absolutely nothing informative about it. I remember as a kid being able to watch television shows that were designed for kids to actually help them think and get skills: Mighty Machines, Magic School bus, Blues Clues, etc. These youtube videos offer nothing informative whatsoever, and don't actually build any interests for the kids.
They need to have actual human beings watch the videos for youtube kids. Creators could have a little box to check to enable their video for youtube kids, and then it should go to review. I've had videos that aren't for kids pop up on youtube kids. This is not right. Parents should not have to flag videos. Once they flag a video, that means their kid already saw it. We need to keep RUclips for ages 13 and up and RUclips kids for the 0-12 range. Also...Superheroes are not just for kids. I think adults should be able to do funny parodies of superheroes and have it not pop up on the kids app. If you had to check a box saying it was meant for kids, then this would help a lot. And if you try to check a box and someone reviews it and it's not appropriate, then you don't get to be on youtube kids. It seems like this would be an easier fix than trying to go through all the videos on the main youtube. And yea...parents need to monitor what their kids watch but everything should be safe on youtube kids.
But sadly age restrictions can be bypassed and hard despite as a kid (now grew up on the old youtube era without the days of these kinds of abominations happening) saddens me even i escaped restrictions to watch content that are OFFICIAL!(ex:the real dora, tom and jerry, etc), not mind brainwashing, educational and appropriately funny as long we comprehend and understand stuff we watch,we cant stop my generation but let em educate what's right and wrong may help which ones to avoid
An I-pad is not a replacement for parenting. You worried about what your kid might see? Good. WATCH THEM. Don't just leave them with an electronic device and assume they're fine. Parenting is work, put in some fucking effort or don't have children!
Inappropriate content for adults= Not Ok! Inappropriate content for children= Ok! Welcome to RUclips, where grownups get demonetized for greed in claims inappropriate content , but Inappropriate content for kids seems to be ok!
I have a little sister that used to love watching nursery rhymes, we had to take it away from her because the videos were getting so vile and disgusting. My sister would get very distressed and for lack of a better word traumatized asking us to take it away whilst bawling her eyes out. It made me very sad to see that it took such a push for youtube to get off their asses and take the right precautions when it comes to children, more effort needs to be put in when children are involved.
Autumn Grace the same thing happened with my nieces. When they wouldn’t scream and run from it, it caused them to do things like the vile videos showed.
So here's a tip... set up a playlist and set her down that path with it. The simple fact is RUclips kids is a mistake, parents can easily handle giving their children access to the content they find appropriate.
i kinda envy you, not judging you or anything but not knowing the depths people will go just to fuck with people regardless of who they are, that kind of ignorance is bliss.
Really? To be honest much of the stuff isn't any different than what was shown on Nickelodeon back in the late 80s and early 90s... in fact this stuff is arguably more tame than much of the stuff that was shown on "You Can't Do That On Television".
Love people saying that they weren't allowed to use Internet until they were X years old and that it should be a solution. Does no one realize that in our generation Internet wasn't simply everywhere as it is today? It was easy to keep kids away. How can you act like smartypants when it's *actually our generation, generation of people commenting here, living in the Internet life* who children follow? Times change whether we like it or not, and it's time to fight the problem, not only to buzz about how it was when you were young. Of course, parental control is crucial, but we have to acknowledge that big part of our life went online and kids are humans - and they will always go where we go. Hope my point is clear.
I was going to say thank you as well...the internet was no where near as big when I was a kid or available at your finger tips 24/7...my kids watch regular RUclips and only certain channels...I check in to make sure they aren't going down the rabbit hole....FGTV and channels with families interacting....now my 6 year old wants to have his OWN channel to show the games he plays...
I'm intrigued that #Elsagate took so long to pop up. This was an issue almost two years ago, if not longer. Also, don't just put your kids in front of an iPad instead of taking care of them! You have an obligation to fulfill!
Matthias Wichert Right? I was thinking the same... I've heard so much about this so long ago, I thought is was something that was already known by a lot of people.
Jay Pardoe I'm an adult without children and I've known about this for a couple years now as well. Parents should be at least monitoring what their kids are watching, they don't have to watch the cartoons themselves. (Even though extra sweet parents like Phil here take the time to watch with his kid as he says here.)
Why are you surprised? Most people still think that #pizzagate is focused on a random pizza shop in D.C. where babies are raped and tortured to death. They refuse to see the bigger picture- although I think we're seeing the cracks in the dam beginning to form with all the sexual deviants in Hollywood starting to get accused. I'm hoping someone like Spacey fucking sings like a canary and blows the lid off the elaborate blackmail/human trafficking ring that was discovered from the Podesta emails.
The daddy finger thing is weird and Creepy enough. Oddly the best thing I’ve found my kid watching was endless old spice terry crews commercials and laughing hysterically
If the parents were involved and responsible, they wouldn't have a phone or tablet in front of the kids face. Don't outsource parenting to a company. Parent your children, this is coming from a father.
Edgar Friendly i understand, but you have to think some kids are able to watch RUclips other places. You can't be with your kid 24/7 so I still believe RUclips should do more to deal with this problem.
Sierra Blake That is less of a problem since if they have limited YT to begin with, they’ll only search up what interests them in the limited time they get online, like reading about bugs or some shit during school. My point being make sure your kid doesn’t get interested in this trash and the rest will fall into place.
While I do think these videos are awful and seeing how they are still seen through RUclips kids is awful. I would like to say that while I was kid, I was almost NEVER on the computer and almost ALWAYS outside having fun like a normal child. I think too many parents use the internet and TV as a glorified babysitter and it has to stop.
These were my thoughts exactly! Parents should know damn well that the internet is not safe to give to a child unprotected and should be used sparingly.
I agree ! They should let their children have some fun at the park or with other neighbor kids, go to the library and read books ! And not have them on the internet just to shut them up ! It's time for those parents to start learning there are other ways to keep a kid entertained maybe they should sit down with their kids and tell them stories or put a movie they liked when they were a child, enough of letting them be unsupervised!
I totally agree. And to be fair it's totally ok to give them short amounts of internet time. I'm not against it completely. It's just when it becomes the babysitter and when they dont supervise their time on it that I have a problem. Especially as the kid gets older and they learn how to use the devices better, who knows what websites they could end up on. Just not safe!
Okay but it’s not back in your day anymore. Instead of complaining about the times, we should get with them in order to protect our children. Kids like screens. Okay. Now let’s make these screens safe for them.
Hey, RUclips algorithm! If a video has piss in its description, suicide in its title, or a nail visibly through a part of a person's body in the thumbnail, IT'S NOT SUITABLE FOR KIDS! Come on, Skynet would do a better job than this.
Preach Phil. RUclips hides behind their algorithm a lot. That said, it's hard to build an automated system to screen every submission, especially those outliers meant to trick the algorithm which a billion hours of video flow through. It's impossible to build a fool proof algorithm to automatically judge content on the Internet, unless you use machine learning. This should continually improve. That said, I have a niece that I'd take a bullet for. I will not allow her to watch RUclips without occasionally checking in on what she's watching with a quizzical eye. Ethan from h3 led me to my own investigation, and PhillyD - you just lit up a bunch of parents and caregivers who actually care. You just stopped at least thousands of hours of kids being traumatized. Bless you, brother. Keep fighting the good fight.
I’m late to this comment but I just did too. Seriously, as a kid, I was on regular RUclips and I saw some smg4 but that was about it. Nothing even close to the hellhole that is RUclips kids.
As a mother of three, I don't let my youngest use RUclips. I don't trust their algorithms and there are lots of other apps that have more kid friendly content, like Netflix in kid mode. I'm beginning to hate Paw Patrol, my youngest loves it and the theme song might be stuck in my head for the rest of my life. I think it's the parents' resposibility to monitor their childrens internet use. As a parent, you must get to know the apps and sites your children are using. My 13 yo is gradually getting access to everything he wants to see from the net, but my 3 yo has very limited access to content.
Alvinsland2 and figge plays :( if your little brother still watches RUclips, then it’s best to create a playlist of videos that are good for him to watch. I think he’ll thank you for it later.
+Mudawi. because a bunch of SJW's run google and youtube and they think shit like this is perfectly fine for kids, thats why. there's clearly an agenda at work here, a very insidious agenda
No. Not even Anita S. would defend this shit. It's the executives over at Google that keep these things afloat because it makes them shittons of money.
I have a 6 year old sister and we always monitor what she watches and we have a Wii U so we turn the Tv on so we know what she’s watching. Also I think that RUclips for kids should review videos in 24 hours and then post them.
*RUclips KIDS IS NOT A BABYSITTER! INTERACT WITH YOUR CHILD! TEACH THEM HOW TO SOCIALIZE!* Ok, I feel better now.. just needed to get that off my chest.
it seems like RUclips almost treats the algorithm like its own entity. Every time an issue with content comes up they just default to essentially "Hey it's the algorithm guys! not us. We'll talk to that pesky algorithm for you." Its just a tired response to their inability to better control the leviathan they created. They have become a completely reactionary company and aren't held accountable because we all know no one will do anything to them.
Nathan Long 16 and 17 year old don’t usually act like that, I think you’re confusing between the kids that are 13 and 14 year olds with actual 16 and 17 year olds.
I think RUclips should have these modes for the website: G,PG or R, etc. Therefore, kids can only watch acceptable contents in 'PG mode' on RUclips. And it is the publishers' responsibilities to rate their videos before they post them. R content can only appear on 'R mode' RUclips. Audiences can also report inappropriate contents not appearing in its matching mode.
"Extreme needle in a haystack" No. Not it is not. If that's what you think, Mister RUclips Learning Man, you are lying to yourself. It's not a needle in a haystack, it's a stack of needles with a handful of hay tossed in.
to add- these videos have probably been reported a ton of times. if you look through the comments sections of them it's people freaking out about it and telling others to report them too. yet... they're still up. are youtube staff being told to ignore it or something?
Jesse McCree same. Don't watch main stream news(not a political statement, I just don't watch it) and I stopped watching every other news channel for various reasons like uploading too often, biased, and not enough coverage/focused on a certain theme of issues(not biased but focused on single issues, topics, or areas).
My younger sister was watching a rock a bye baby video which featured a baby in a cradle falling off the tree...but it wasn't caught by it mother and she started crying...😪😒
My poor little sister was just minding her own business watching the RUclips Kids Channel and then near the end Micky Mouse hangs himself by the noose i immediately told my Mom and she banned my Sister from watching these abominations, disgusting, and disturbing Kids Channel!!!
@@FF8Irvine_Fan yea lmaoaoa, she was only 3 at the time and usually all the other versions of that song the baby would be caught, but this one time it smashed to peices and she was distraughtt
My mom scared me away from RUclips when I was young. By the time that stopped working, I was mature enough to handle the internet. I'm still incredibly grateful for this.
Oh my gosh, thank you for posting this Phil. I literally found out about Elsagate a few days ago and it's been eating me up how sick and mysterious it seems. Love your program and your dedication to news
Audrey Gabrielle while I like this Friday show, I don't think he should completely end his old type. Maybe just do it every other week? Interacting with the community is vitally important to keeping Philly non-biased. If he says something biased, or lies to push a narrtive, he will end up facing the backlash from his community. Then, he will have to explain his side more thoroughly, or admit he was being too biased. That is what keeps him unique. CNN and FOX will never be accountable for anything they do. Phil is.
I just feel like there are better ways to connect with us other than just reading a few comments from the comment section. Finding a better way is something that I think he can work on, but I do enjoy Phil’s news segments.
they could just start uploading the videos after they pass that, or they could buy another established channel these are calculated disgusting adults treating this like a business
Because that would require RUclips to do work. They're not here for the good of us viewers or our kids. They're here for the good of their own bank account.
YEAH I KNOW PAW PATROL, SO WHAT?! 😂😂😂
Philip DeFranco I watched it too. Really good show
Yeah I watch it due to my sister, for 2 hours
I
Love
Paw Patrol.
Philip DeFranco Me too mate. It’s so relaxing to watch it with my younger sister.
You just was doing your research on the show lmao
I think it's absolutely ridiculous that stuff like that can slip through the cracks without being demonetized, when totally wholesome content is being subjected to the " not eligible for monetization" BS.
RUclips is massively incompetent. Nothing new there.
the Algorithm DOES NOT WORK
Bobby Duke Arts RUclips’s days are numbered
H3H3 did a video on this like a year ago! Maybe even longer. RUclips doesn't watch their own shit. I get don't get high on your own supply but you gotta test the product to make sure it's pure.
That's the system you're signing up to. It is exploitable. Until one day when we have good enough software to get closer to being 100% correct, which will take atleast a few years.
A channel should have to apply to be featured as a kids channel. Once approved they are shown. If they fuck up they get removed from kids and are never allowed back.
JamesBacha this is actually a really good idea
ZeiaZeh after a period of inactivity just blacklist the channel and whitelist their existing content
This has been a problem for over 2 years, yet RUclips still hasn't fixed it and this shit ends up on RUclips kids all the time.
They are busy demonetizing political videos and removing harmless educational videos, no time to look at what the kids are watching!
Seriously. H3H3 has been covering this for a while. RUclips should be ashamed
it is made to promote pedo culture, watching cartoon girls get abused gets them off.
The whole RUclips kids “genre” is creepy. The songs, the animation, everything about is just disturbing
YES OMG FINALY SOMEONE GETS IT
It gave me nightmares not even joking
Also this update they did in December i read commemts in some videos now because of this dumb RUclips kids
Even im afraid......
When I worked as a Wal-mart cashier, I saw these videos daily because parents would just plop an iPad in front of their kids to shut them up for an hour or so while they shopped. I already knew about the actual content in the videos and I would sometimes notify the parent. They were either very shocked as to what their child was watching, or angry with me for "telling them how to raise their kids"
That's basically what my parents did, they just sat me down in front of the tv and go off to do whatever, but at least Clifford wasn't burying Emily Elizabeth alive and then shitting on her.
Rainbow-Unicorn-Teaparty. Lol ikr
XD
ye but srsly.
"Seemingly innocent children's videos" so much wrong with that phrase. It should be "Cashgrab fetish fueled channels, for kids".
Yea i saw a video of spiderman and a clown vaping
If y’all are really in it for the kids and not just profiting from them then you should be ok with it it.
I agree that the RUclips admin is extremely corrupt and they need to acknowledge what mistakes their doing and improve themselves.
Cocomelon, "Toys and Colors", Clad and Nikita, Blippi Toys, BabyBus, and CKN Toys are destroying RUclips. They need to be erased!
When I heard that RUclips was making an app for kids I assumed it would only contain pre-screened content. Who in their right minds would think that with our current level of technology it'd be ok for a computer to decide what children can watch?
DigitalImpostor agreed!
DigitalImpostor We downloaded RUclips Kids and by evening it was uninstalled. My oldest was decent at managing what to watch, but my little one was off in strange stuff waaasy too fast.
Once we take out these channels, we’re heading for their app
Google thinks they know best since we use google everyday anyway.
We’re about to fight the app and we will win

That guy With dat laptop ain't that the truth
That guy With dat laptop your comment made me laugh more then I should’ve.
Grooming videos to what? Dressing up as a Disney princess and going on a rampage killing Minions merchandise?
Genevieve and Kenji, HarpsiFizz already spoke about tin foil hats so obviously he's very smart and knows everything without even having to bother to think things through.
Cruxal be nice of the subreddit went all out on flagging it.
This is why we can't have nice things
theokchannel my thought exactly
OH MY GOD PHILP DEFRANCO SCAMMING EXPOSED CONFIRMED.
lol.
We can have nice things... like censorship!
Torsten J haha that made me laugh
theokchannel Truer words haven't been said
I wasn't aware of this but this is very scary.
The real issue is the fact that this looks like an orchestrated campaign aimed at young children.
youtube isn’t going to do shit; they don’t care. all they care about is watch time and profit
bighands69 it is, look up pizzagate. it’s getting out of Control Pedophiles coming out, asking to be accepted in society.
This is why I keep telling my parents to put a password on RUclips. My little brother keeps watching this stuff.
Mega pixel Then stop him it's not that hard even if you get yelled at DO SOMETHING
Putting a password won’t do anything, it will only prevent them from signing into a RUclips account. They’re still able to watch videos even if they don’t have an account.
This is sick I have a son and I won't let him go onto RUclips kids. I would rather let him go onto RUclips
@@dookie7299 I don't want to sound offensive, but honestly you shouldn't let him into any of these platforms.
It’s disturbing that RUclips is less disturbing than RUclips kids because of this.
"a needle in a haystack?" More like a haystack made of needles!
through her hands!
Jonty Lewis oh my God that's how they make their video thumbnails!
a hay in a needle stack
dearhoneylemon your going to need a big magnet to find that one straw of hay. ;-;
Epic Derp That's a neddlestack.
Phil, we were scheduled to ignore this problem for another 4 years at least.
P.s we'll maybe decide to deal with it in 4 years ciao
yep
but yet my videos get demonetized for having CAPS on
NastyTracks Lol
you put caps on video titles? ugh
Ikr, me too and I draw animals
You fucking monster
Parents! Don't use RUclips as a baby-sitter. If you can't be in the room with them, give them a book!! Simple!
Or a toy or something that is appropriate to children....
Or tell'em to go outside and play. For working parents just simply send their children to either a relative's house or daycare. Who needs RUclips
@@t.f.r287 you have a point.
@Jack send her to a daycare if she's an infant, orelse train her to not watch yt kids
or go outside (if its safe) or they could simply watch tv
Thank you SO much for addressing this!
Melanie Murphy hi
Melanie Murphy Right? This needed addressing!! I also love your videos!! 💚
I didn't even know about this(I don't have kids)...it's utterly disgusting and RUclips needs to be more vigilant and not let children be able to view this stuff...let kids be kids for god's sake,sheesh.....
And one question...if Susan Wojcicki quits RUclips, then why not have Hiroshi Fujioka as Segata Sanshiro in charge for a Day?
2:43 "kicks him in the dick 3 times" Reminds me of what Susan did to youtubers.
Top10Archive lmao truth
More like RUclipsrs like idubbbztv or filthyfranktv
Got 'em.
lol
Reminds me of vegeta's cooler moment..
When I was little, my dad told me to "never get online without permission because there are things on the internet that will stay in your brain, things like people's heads being cut off and stuff that will give you nightmares for many, many years!"
This happened before RUclips was a thing, so it is up to the parents to tell kids that they can't do that alone. Watch the videos with your kids and never leave them alone in front of a computer screen.
But the whole thing now is kids have SO many ways to get online, not just at a computer. And you cannot ALWAYS be on top of your kid. Parents should be able to trust youtubekids to not be THIS HORRIBLE!
hoffy1138
Agreed that it is the parents responsibility to protect the kids, but that does not excuse RUclips's responsibility to deliver content in line with the "safe for kids" ideal which people are clearly agreeing they have failed to do.
hoffy1138 true
Not going to lie, because of the internet, it opened up my mind that politics and media tries to hide from the common people. So, because of that, and knowing specific people who do such things -- you go and realize how much bullshit and evil are in this world. Especially politics.
The odds of them finding those videos accidentally are slim at best
here's an idea.... STOP. HANDING.YOUR. TODDLER. AN. IPAD. AND. THEN. WALKING. AWAY.
“B-but it’s not as simple as that!”
People do that so the their kid will shut up.
The Mysterious exactly. How about actually being a parent like they used to have to be?
Geoffrey I don't know. But I do that I won't have kids.
Do you have kids?
So somehow this slips past RUclips's radar and gets put in front of kids, yet people that make meaningful content that are the reason behind RUclips's growth and development get demonetized and punished for swearing
stalewich Exactly what I was going to say...
stalewich Maybe they've been running 2 algorithms.
#thetolerantleft
Philip DeFranco oh lawdy, I love this kind of IRL big-name drama you bring to us common folk.
Maybe you should stick to Netflix kids.
maybe it's just me but my mum just put me in the living room with a crate of building blocks. On weekends in the morning I could watch cartoons.
Yank the fucking tablet from him
I mean, there are official apps like Nick Jr that kids can use and it’s fine.
+Glacius
I'm a Pedagogic Worker. I've studied kids' cognitive, social and emotional behaviour 3 year long, from the ages 0 to 21 (which is when you, on average stop growing.)
You can tell your girlfriend that I agree with you.
As it is now, anyone trying to make actual QUALITY kids videos will simply be swamped by some random mishmash of stock animations and annoying music put on repeat because they can just flood RUclips with QUANTITY.
zammmerjammer Agreed. It's so simple yet why are they not doing it for such a terrible problem.
zammmerjammer great minds think alike! it seems as though this should be as clear as day..
zammmerjammer I agree this is a good idea if there going to have a safe kids app they them self need to filter the vids
zammmerjammer kind of like the Twitter “verified” banner but for kid friendly RUclips channels.
@RUclips hire this guy
Why does half of those videos always have Elsa and Spiderman😂😂
BA3Y R1S Boys like Spiderman, Girls like Elsa, that way both genders are interested in it.
Hold same. I hated frozen in general but Spider-Man was and still is my favorite superhero. These videos need to stop!

Lol ik this is old buuuut... I’m a girl and I like Spider-Man 😂 and I’m not a fan of Elsa XD
It depends on the person's favorites. A person can like elsa or spider-man, by any gender.
@@Coffeexcake05 Lol, I'm a male and I like so much Elsa xd
It’s sickening to think how disturbed children will be by seeing some of their favourite characters in such sadistic situations. I really this could be traumatising a younger generation and it makes me scared for parents.
OrlyZara traumatising? i think most kids are a bit harder than that
The clip from 4:20
My little sister was watching that on my iPod (she’s 4) and when she watched that part she was freaking and out and crying out for our mom and she was just bawling due to the fact my little sister was In an car accident with my mom like almost a year ago and it made me cry the fact she still remember that. I didn’t expect the video to have any of that but I don’t want to ruin my sister mentality. Fuck these people.
Screw flashback

Puggernaut TrillTraks poor thing
This is pretty old news but still a major problem, thank you for finally coming around to addressing this.
Does Elsagate reminds you of Happy Tree Friends?
So whatever it's educational videos about catching mice humane, it get demonized.
Watching a horror related video with warnings posted in the beginning, demonized.
"Kids" channels with graphic images of violence & sex. Bling-bling! $$$$

I think horror videos should have warning someone (description or the actual video) but I agree things are demonetized for all the wrong reasons

Your comment is confusing

Yea RUclips doesn't care about them being back, and still abusing children
RUclips is so broken that I wouldn't be surprised if this video got demonetized for showing inappropriate content.
As a parent of young kids, this pisses me off so much.
Why don’t these companies that own these characters, and their copyrights just take down these videos like they do with tons of other content for no reason?
I'm wondering the same thing.
EMoloneyC whatever. These videos get flagged and th y don’t do anything about it.
Prime example in 2020 is Wabbit season by meat canyon which was taken down by Warner Bros.
Urban_Foxtrot I loved paw patrol when i was a little kid tbh probs would watch now
Those people don't need help, they need to get their money taken away from them.
God forbid a parody ever exists.
oBLACKIECHANoo parody is one thing but labeled for kids isn't quite right. Example labeling porn as sex education for kids, or showing a murder of some one such as burning a homeless guy as a teaching tool for young kids in some way. Just saying.
Why is this just happening now? H3H3 has been talking about this for a long time, I assumed people just didn't care.
Pillsbury DoughBane what’s sad is that H3H3 was covering this a year ago
I am surprised this is so far down - first thing that I thought of - these are the Bradbury brothers!!!! I am Effan Bradbury! I would say though, Difranco is putting a good spin on this. It will be good for H3H3 and the whole RUclips community if Google puts some human eyes on the highly watched content. More importantly, audits that provide algorithmic feedback to the system and improve AI. That is extra investment, but likely well spent....
Reignbot was talking about already too.
I've also seen videos from other youtubers talking about this too, this was not a secret, not even remotely. There is a massive market for videos among kids. Really pathetic that advertisers all got so upset over some random video of hate speech but did crap when it came to the horribly inappropriate advertising.
Shane Dawson talked about it too. He contacted RUclips about it but I don’t think much happened.
4:50 "The extreme needle in the haystack."
What?! More like finding a haystack through needles.

Holy shit I got more likes on this comment that I ever got on an actual comment
But this isn't always on the parent. We don't let our kids use RUclips Kids, because frankly we're experienced with RUclips's algorithm enough to know not to trust it. However, many schools use the app, and allow the kids to watch it without any supervision. So your kids could be watching inappropriate content at school without you even knowing.
It's still your responsibility to conduct your own due diligence on the school's curriculum.
Damien Martinez Did you even read what I wrote? It's not part of the curriculum. The schools just give the kids access to tablets and let them watch videos on RUclips Kids if they finish all their work. How could RUclips be part of the curriculum?
Wait schools let kids watch this crap? What happened to good old educational shows on DVD or even VHS?
Dude, that went out the window with the Millennials. Being in grade school around 2001 put an end to that sort of system. I was one of the last classes that got to see decent shows about educational stuff like Bill Nye and shit.
Yikes those are stupid schools if they allow students to watch RUclips Kids under any kind of circumstances.
The RUclips Kids app is supposed to be videos specifically for kids though.
True plus if they want to make youtube for kids it Should be restricted and an actual human being review it
Jacadamia I agree fully
ROADMASTER 97 yeah if one of reported enough and is this clear just shut down the entire channel
Andy Brice exactly, and since youtube kids isnt even safe for kids at all it's false advertising on their part. If it's impossible to 100% ensure it's safe for kids it shouldn't exist at all tbh.
Parents could just put a playlist on repeat
Scribbles Scribbles I agree with you, but most parents are clueless about this kind of thing. The majority of the parents of young children that I’ve babysat have allowed their children to freely roam around RUclips. It’s really shocking and terrible what children can stumble upon on this website.
My niece clicks off the playlist. We’ve tried playlists.
That would require them to actually pay attention
That Scottish Fur best solution
Yeah but they could also try this revolutionary thing called parenting! Don't get me wrong I'm not calling anyone a bad parent! But apps do not and *cannot* replace a mother or father minding their children!!
NOTHING will ever replace parents who watch what their little ones are watching (or doing) online!
And yet Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry, etc., were deemed inappropriate for children.
But not very inappropriate, tbh
At least it's better and it's not Messed up .
unlike these creepy "family friendly" kid videos
Exactamundo. Go figure, eh?
how tho
I swear there is a group of people bent on trying to traumatize and subvert children. The question is why are they doing it?
Human trafficking. It's horrible and scary, but it's what these sickos do. And RUclips lets it happened because they want money
Apparently its got to do with trying to normalize this behaviour to kids so its easier to exploit them, lots of these types of videos (especially ones that feature child actors crying / screaming / being "pranked" in the shower) have many pedophilic comments
money
Parents shouldn't be handing over internet capable devices for unmonitored "tablet time". Be a better parent.
What the actual fuck??
tarrker These vids are optimised to show up on RUclips Kids.
Oh
i remember me and my friends reported these channels and videos(i bet others did) already and yet youtube is doing something now? after a whole year?seems suspicious to me.
SomethingReallyStrange honestly RUclips should get their game together instead of demonitizing everyone.
Raven Same here.
Guys youtube is taking a cut whenever ads are played. Is it really a surprise that they don't want to shine light one of their most profitable sections on the platform? :)
Maybe if we didn't ban RUclips Champions then we would have had the power to police our own community.
Exactly! Have parental controls where nothing is shown until a parent allows a certain channel or video.
I like this idea.
WhaleWisper you can put a time limited on them for how long they can watch it for!
WhaleWisper you should work for RUclips
Cause youtube is too stupid to understand this and let bots do all the work.
It sounds like RUclips doesn't care about this situation in my opinion
AllisonCat8 They don't. They support it.
AllisonCat8 they only care if lots of people complain and it getting media attention :/
Heavenly Athena They don’t care. Many people have complained about it and has gotten media attention (on RUclips). Of course the news media won’t talk about it because they want you to think it’s just another one of those crazy conspiracy theories.
Why should they? the kids aren't theirs, the fault lies 100% with the parents....
Muskoka Mike For real?
Wouldn't it be better for human beings to actually look at the videos BEFORE they're put on the kids app, instead of changing the monetization rules?
Confused Witchy Woman but that would require effort.
Thank you for addressing this. I came across these videos a few months ago and wow! I don't think I'll ever let my future kids have internet access.
spritz Berry yes you can, my kids are 10 and 7, daughter and son.
RUclips is broke
The Nocturnal Alchemist understanvle have a nice meme
No it's just parents are too lazy to learn how to either make a playlist and approve the content in the playlist before giving it to their kids or are unknowlegable but still giving their kids access to something they don't understand. Then when this stuff slips by they blame the platform instead of themselves. It isn't just an on off switch for stopping these things slipping through. Even the most advanced neural network in the world would occasionally let one slip through just to test the fringe cases better.

Do you naturally say that with everything?
@@melon.the.felon2 Oh your 10. Me too.
@@inspector_yasmin me too!
Congrats
I was pretty surprised during a swimming unit in PE in high school that some of my classmates didn't know how to swim, especially in California.
To make more money and increase trust in their system from dimwitted parents/guardians?

I've seen something like that on youtube but I don't remember the channel it was from. I hope this comment gets seen and somebody like Phil speaks out about it;; ♥
We’ve all watched a video on RUclips and thought ya I shouldn’t watch this.
Kivan
This is exactly what happened in our family. I would let my son watch children's mine craft videos while I cook. I heard crazy noises and came in and saw mine craft porn (weirdly violent minecraft porn. But everyone was happy?)
My son, age 6, didn't understand what was happening in the videos and didn't understand why I was being such a "mean mom" for totally locking down RUclips.
The worst part is when I went back and reviewed the history,... if that one show hadsnt caught my attention Idk how much longer it would have gone on.
Mind you I don't cook super elaborate meals. 30-40 mins
I was sick to my stomach
We as parents can't become complacent!
My mom was often against any kind of violence on TV while my dad was like "but it's fun, honey!" 😅
(come on my mom, Naruto isn't THAT violent!!!
Don’t say you love Paw Patrol if you’ve never read the manga, Phil.
Is that a joke, or is there actually a manga for that?

The manga was good the end was satisfying but a little anti climatic.
I feel like this debate requires numerous of factors to be considered: what affect kids? when does it affect kids? how do we prevent it from affecting the cognitive and behavioural development of children? how to still allow kids to develop technical skills, explore the wonder of the internet and consume to good stuff to survive in this technologically driven world?
protect yoo kids
Sophie pretty much relatable
Dang. Generation Z and this much depth. I commend you young one!!!
Hey my niece watches your videos

You worried about what your kid might see? Good. WATCH THEM. Don't just leave them with an electronic device and assume they're fine. Parenting is work, put in some fucking effort or don't have children!
Spot-on!
Jackson Furlong Exactly turn on PBS Kids, go outside with them. RUclips is no place for young children.

Inappropriate content for adults= Not Ok!
Inappropriate content for children= Ok!
Welcome to RUclips, where grownups get demonetized for greed in claims inappropriate content , but Inappropriate content for kids seems to be ok!
The Crow exploit children + censor adults = maximum profit
Nick Possible no blame capitalism because it let's private companies do this. It incentivizes this.
Nick Possible , protect your children from RUclips garbage.
Phil, has your channel been hacked?
So here's a tip... set up a playlist and set her down that path with it. The simple fact is RUclips kids is a mistake, parents can easily handle giving their children access to the content they find appropriate.
Naj Adamu Nah, that's a fake Phil with a capital i replacing the lower case L
Autumn Grace same except my cousins don’t cry about it. They actually watch it and replay it
how about we don't raise our kids on youtube
Right but hey some parents are just so incompetent, that they were better off having no kids at all.
I can't believe this
I didn't belive that people would organize a nation-wide event where they scream helplessly at the sky, wishing that they would die. But, here we are.
Old news
Vanessa Blanco I do.
i kinda envy you, not judging you or anything but not knowing the depths people will go just to fuck with people regardless of who they are, that kind of ignorance is bliss.
Really? To be honest much of the stuff isn't any different than what was shown on Nickelodeon back in the late 80s and early 90s... in fact this stuff is arguably more tame than much of the stuff that was shown on "You Can't Do That On Television".
At first, I was super disappointed that this was an eight-minute show and you only covered one story, but then I realized that it was Friday.
WHAT. IS. THIS. NIGHTMARE. WHY. DO. THESE. MONSTERS EXIST. JUST WHY. WHY.
And apparently they are right...
Idk but why do you have a period after every word?
Love people saying that they weren't allowed to use Internet until they were X years old and that it should be a solution.
Does no one realize that in our generation Internet wasn't simply everywhere as it is today? It was easy to keep kids away. How can you act like smartypants when it's *actually our generation, generation of people commenting here, living in the Internet life* who children follow? Times change whether we like it or not, and it's time to fight the problem, not only to buzz about how it was when you were young. Of course, parental control is crucial, but we have to acknowledge that big part of our life went online and kids are humans - and they will always go where we go.
Hope my point is clear.
thank you
I was going to say thank you as well...the internet was no where near as big when I was a kid or available at your finger tips 24/7...my kids watch regular RUclips and only certain channels...I check in to make sure they aren't going down the rabbit hole....FGTV and channels with families interacting....now my 6 year old wants to have his OWN channel to show the games he plays...
@@MetahForeGenome do not get him a channel, he Will cry cuz he wont get 1 million subscribers in a week
I'm pretty sure most of the people saying that are around 13 to 15 right now
I'm intrigued that #Elsagate took so long to pop up. This was an issue almost two years ago, if not longer. Also, don't just put your kids in front of an iPad instead of taking care of them! You have an obligation to fulfill!
Matthias Wichert Right? I was thinking the same... I've heard so much about this so long ago, I thought is was something that was already known by a lot of people.
adults don't tend to watch childrens videos so it's not that surprising
B DeWit ugh you're so right
The daddy finger thing is weird and Creepy enough. Oddly the best thing I’ve found my kid watching was endless old spice terry crews commercials and laughing hysterically
515nam Terry is much more child friendly
Now those commercials should be on RUclips kids
thats hilarious
Things change. It isn't 1960 anymore.
SuperCosmicKuma Skynet would do us a favor and kill us.
When youtube kids has more disturbing shit than most adult films
It is almost as bad as reddit 50/50 0_0
read this comment i think its worse actually
I’m 10 years old and I watch RUclips kids and I saw really disturbing animations not even adults should see…
I’m late to this comment but I just did too.
This just makes me sick, I have a younger sister who watches the exact same stuff, now this makes me wonder what she has actually seen.
Royal Buttocks please help your sister by making sure she doesn’t watch this stuff :( it’s really hurting children.
Your name is royal buttocks, and you have a cartoon picture of a butt, and then you comment this comment, this is great.
lol
Rpay yea heh... I try to keep things comedic, but this kinda bothered me, so I had to voice some concern.
Alvinsland2 and figge plays :( if your little brother still watches RUclips, then it’s best to create a playlist of videos that are good for him to watch. I think he’ll thank you for it later.
Why are these weird channels still on RUclips and always trending!!
I always try to flag them but honestly I don’t see any progress
im assuming its because youtube profits from this just as much as these weird channels do from ads.
+Mudawi. because a bunch of SJW's run google and youtube and they think shit like this is perfectly fine for kids, thats why. there's clearly an agenda at work here, a very insidious agenda
No. Not even Anita S. would defend this shit.
It's the executives over at Google that keep these things afloat because it makes them shittons of money.
It doesn't necessarily mean that _she has_ to agree to this.
She's probably unaware of it.
I have a 6 year old sister and we always monitor what she watches and we have a Wii U so we turn the Tv on so we know what she’s watching.
Also I think that RUclips for kids should review videos in 24 hours and then post them.
Maryam Mirza yay thanks for protecting your sister :)
*RUclips KIDS IS NOT A BABYSITTER! INTERACT WITH YOUR CHILD! TEACH THEM HOW TO SOCIALIZE!*
Ok, I feel better now.. just needed to get that off my chest.
adam mac Exactly this!
ravenkrofft Thanks! 👍
Merry Weather Yes, very sad indeed.
Socializing? Playing outside? What's that?
Better yet don't have kids
it seems like RUclips almost treats the algorithm like its own entity.
This shit is going to breed so many serial killers. I've watched too much Mindhunter to realize this.
It would make sense if you said enough.
Nathan Long
16 and 17 year old don’t usually act like that, I think you’re confusing between the kids that are 13 and 14 year olds with actual 16 and 17 year olds.
What is with the awful acting in Mindhunder. It's just so unnatural. Truly boring show.
1 of the better shows on Netflix
Nathan Long they been brainwashed
I think RUclips should have these modes for the website: G,PG or R, etc. Therefore, kids can only watch acceptable contents in 'PG mode' on RUclips. And it is the publishers' responsibilities to rate their videos before they post them. R content can only appear on 'R mode' RUclips. Audiences can also report inappropriate contents not appearing in its matching mode.
Z Picasso
Genius, but semi-flawed.
Exactly!
Z Picasso if it’s the publishers responsibility they can easily lie on it. That’s what they have been doing after all.
They have restricted mode, same thing
Let's not forget Y and Y7, too.
"Extreme needle in a haystack"
No. Not it is not. If that's what you think, Mister RUclips Learning Man, you are lying to yourself. It's not a needle in a haystack, it's a stack of needles with a handful of hay tossed in.
Gravuun its a pile of junky needles in a playground.
to add- these videos have probably been reported a ton of times. if you look through the comments sections of them it's people freaking out about it and telling others to report them too.
yet... they're still up.
are youtube staff being told to ignore it or something?
The handful of hay is quite a generous sum you came up with.
+War Of Noise I think RUclips is doing this as one giant social experiment.
Seriously, what's with all the needles?
Philly D is literally the only channel where I will fully watch every upload. Love yo face, Phil
Jesse McCree hey say the thing
literally no one cares
Philip DeFranco B I G S U R P R I S E ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Jesse McCree same. Don't watch main stream news(not a political statement, I just don't watch it) and I stopped watching every other news channel for various reasons like uploading too often, biased, and not enough coverage/focused on a certain theme of issues(not biased but focused on single issues, topics, or areas).
Phil and h3h3, papa bless
My younger sister was watching a rock a bye baby video which featured a baby in a cradle falling off the tree...but it wasn't caught by it mother and she started crying...😪😒
That's actually kind of light compared to the horrors out there.
Pretty sure that's what the song was ABOUT.
My poor little sister was just minding her own business watching the RUclips Kids Channel and then near the end Micky Mouse hangs himself by the noose i immediately told my Mom and she banned my Sister from watching these abominations, disgusting, and disturbing Kids Channel!!!
@@FF8Irvine_Fan yea lmaoaoa, she was only 3 at the time and usually all the other versions of that song the baby would be caught, but this one time it smashed to peices and she was distraughtt

parents letting their children watch these pornographic disturbing videos should be considered as child abuse

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Frozen Elsa suicide Spiderman Maleficent Superman Joker...

Renzo Flordelis extremely.
Hello RUclipsDude
H3H3 covered this months ago and RUclips didn't care, seems they only attack people who criticise them
thats the whole point of the "adpocalypse"
Defranco also covered this months ago lol.
Much happier with this type of Friday show. Thanks phil!
Phil is.
Audrey Gabrielle I like when he reads comments on friday
I just feel like there are better ways to connect with us other than just reading a few comments from the comment section. Finding a better way is something that I think he can work on, but I do enjoy Phil’s news segments.
Why not have like a program where the channel has to apply to become a "kid friendly" channel and then only show those channels on RUclips kids
KillerTheMike what I was thinking...
KillerTheMike that’s a really good idea
they could just start uploading the videos after they pass that, or they could buy another established channel
these are calculated disgusting adults treating this like a business
Because that would require RUclips to do work. They're not here for the good of us viewers or our kids. They're here for the good of their own bank account.
"Mom can we have cartoons?"
"We have cartoons at home."
*Cartoons at home: **4:09*
To some of the kids that watched this video of paw patrol family in a car crash can cause really intense mental illness, anxiety, and fear.
