How well I remember the night you became Miss America. I was a very homesick college junior attending school in a city much too far from my home in Southeast Arkansas. Since I grew up singing gospel music with my family I was sure pulling for you, my southern sister! I KNEW you were going to win. There was just something different about you! I was thrilled but not surprised when you won. In later years I was going through a very rough time when I turned on the tv to see Cheryl Prewitt, Miss America 1980 giving her testimony! Again, I was thrilled. You finished your talk and were getting ready to pray for everyone listening. In my sad mind I thought "I don't know if God loves me as much as he must love Miss America." I promise this next part is completely true because you IMMEDIATELY said, "you know, God doesn't love me a bit more than he loves you..." I was STUNNED and so thankful for your words and for a heavenly father who truly loves us all. I am a 62 year old woman now and I have so many blessings in my life. I was diagnosed with Lymphedema not long ago and I can now relate to you in another way as I have severely limited mobility. Praying for healing is hard for me since I'm unsure if I am supposed to ask for it. But I know that Jesusi is with me no matter what. THANK YOU for "showing up" in my life when I needed it. God has used you to bless me over the years. God bless you, Cheryl.

well yes and no. To her credit, with the mishap live that night on national tv with the second mic not working for - was it at least 20 seconds? And how in spite of that, and that she REALLY honestly has a voice MADE for that song, in my mind at least among those top 10 finalists, I cannot at all fathom that she was NOT the person who scored highest for the finals in talent. Others may have flinched or been a bit unnerved by the mic just not working,but due to what I gather was her having maybe a decade and half of singing publicly- that experience, those years of performing for an audience paid off very nicely in the just how gosh darn well she maintained her composure. It really takes nerves of steel and years of experience to not immediately panic in such a situation as that. But also, I have a friend who was in AC for her prelim talent night (his boyfriend's sister was a contestant that year). And they were all right fully so beyond impressed with Cheryl's talent how they were slightly more astounded by NY's prelim baton twirling routine. (who on finals night, whether it was the pressure or not, drops the baton at a critical moment). So, I can definitely agree with you that no doubt with Cheryl the talent was there, but two factors that can affect a contestant winning a prelim is a) its clearly subjective to the extent that the judges are in advance given a breakdown on things to consider in judging each prelim. and b) the young women are randomly drawn into three separate prelim groups. Meaning there COULD in fact one year be that it so happens that the 3 best overall and highest scoring of ALL contestants are by pure coincidence randomly drawn into the same preliminary group!

Wonderful encouraging story. As a Christian woman, I think your makeup is much too strong and the hair. I'm sorry to say, but it's immodest to do your makeup so strong. I guess I also don't understand why you wanted to win so badly. So what if you didn't win, doesn't make u any less. God bless.
