I didn't see the pageant that night, but heard on a radio "quick news update" hours earlier that "a poised, attractive and black" Miss NY was favored to win.
I watched this pageant that night and I thought the best one was the 1st runner up. She was the most talented singer, that was so clear to me. I was surprised Vanessa won. They were both African-American women.
I remember watching this Pageant Show. Vanessa Williams was my pick 💋❣️🌹as Miss America 1983-1984. From Syracuse, New York Vanessa's career has expanded in many areas in the Entertainment Industry including a professional dancer. Vanessa Williams accomplished what she said she would achieve in Life! 👏❣️💋🌹💕🦋👠👑♀️
@@marymary68ify the key is that she was able to move easily in it down the run way instead of shuffling along like. the others. She could walk with purpose;.
I read on one of these comments posts for one of the 3 or 4 videos on youtube for this pageant year in specific something along the lines that a few years after the pageant it was confirmed or at least strongly suggested that the winner was actually supposed to be Pamela Rigas, 4thrRU here, and back in '81 representing Alabama also in top 5 for Miss USA. Any comments or input on whether that person meant to type Pam Battles, 2nd RU here, instead? And how , where and from whom does that suggestion originate? Thank you.
It seems to me that clueless producers and executives tinkered with the formulas of these pageants soooo much they took away everything that worked in the first place.
Have NO idea what 70 yr old lady-like walk you are referring to? 70 yr old ladies have are already losing bone density, becoming weak, and sometimes hunched over and frail when walking. Ms Missouri, and ESP Wana Gedde, (mississippi) are great examples of effective training for such pageants starting at young ages like they do in the south. The idea back then for evening gown was to walk steadily, gracefully, showing confidence, and giving constant eye contact to those judges. And they passed!
Vanessa is almost walking TOO fast (not gracefully as was the accepted method)) & had NO eye contact w/ the judges. Her pageant inexperience shows as well in the way she goes about turning around to show all of her gown after her microphone speech. The southern pageant girls are trained to rotate their bodies around sort of tightly (WITH the help of the turning the shoes), as though on a stable, centered axis. Vanessa didn't do that. Love her anyway! remember: the interview is key to winning
and that's why they all LOST. Perhaps they should have "loosen up"" a bit. That is the problem with girls breed from birth to the pagent world, they become robots.
@@dlw1221 "breed"?? in terms ofo humans thats so derogatory its verging on pejorative. ugh. Humans are not bred, they are raised. Please also use your verbs if you want to speak from authority and critique another person, and that includes how they are/were raised, are/were trained to do beauty pageants. wow. google definition of the word breeding.
These were among the last year where the women were robotic clones. Thank God. Vanessa Willimas's helped start the movement toward a more authentic and genuine Miss America rather than just a pretty female talking head.
1. NJ- Ok, it was the 80s, but this did nothing for her. Shame, she was packaged all wrong.2. TX- This has to go down as one of the ugliest ever EGs at MA. BDon really liked putting his girls in fugly dresses.3. KY-- I liked her that year. Dress okay, great hair. Love how she's referring to email in 1983.4. MO- She did walk like a 70 y/o, and looked it too. Next.5. OH- I loved Pamela. She already competed at USA. I like her presentation here. Too bad her talent was dreadful. She was athletic, just take a year of ballet.6. MS- For some unknown reason she was a favorite, maybe because the other favorites were northeastern black women. Her walk is stunted, and I hate to say it, she knows she is a size 20 who starved down to a six for the pageant and would rapidly go back to a 20. She did some plus size modeling, not surprisingly. She was a bitch to VW at the competition. Why? Wanda should have just been happy making MA broadcast what with her terrible body and talent.7. NE- Hands down the worst packaged contestant in the competition. Her SS was like a rusty purple with matching heels, eek. This dress is so ill fitting and unsuitable, it was probably a hand me down. And she sounds dumb. She can't read a novel, but, truthfully, loves to read POETRY?? What a dunce.8. FL- I loved her talent. Well, maybe not the song choice, but she could SANG! EG is okay, hair is 80s, hard to judge. She was in my top 5 that night.9. AL- Some people got her, others didn't. She's wearing a wedding dress, a big pageant no/no in my book. I will always remember that it's Pam Battles that supplies the piped in music to the space shuttle. snicker.10. NY- Believe it or not, I really did not like this dress. She did look like the Statue of Liberty, and since she was from NY maybe that was the point. This dress did nothing to show off her body or her beauty. It looks like she was caught in the act with a boyfriend when a roommate came home and just wrapped herself in sheets to pass it off.My rankings: NY, OH, FL, KY, AL and the rest deserve the crap bin at KMart.
Vanessa did what she said she hoped to do.....Love it.
actually, Vanessa did exactly what Suzette said in her response...
They Saved the Best for Last! Go Vanessa!!!
She would eventually have a song in the 90s called "Save the Best for Last"
@@mysticgirl916IT. IS "SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST" THE WORST SONG OR THE BEST SONG OR NOT? 🤨

I would love to get my hands on the entire video for the 1984 pageant. If anyone has it. I was Miss Oklahoma that year and would love to have a copy.

Vanessa was the hands down winner in most of the competitions. I remember saying she was dressed like the Statue of Liberty!!
Yes, like a winner! She made great choices.
Vanessa Williams WON RIGHT THERE
I watched this pageant that night and I thought the best one was the 1st runner up. She was the most talented singer, that was so clear to me. I was surprised Vanessa won. They were both African-American women.
But as usual the blonde was chosen over the brunette.
so classy! I miss when the pageant looked like this. excellent. thank you for posting

Vanessa's evening gown screams winner. I am Miss America!
Miss New Jersey, Miss Alabama and Miss New York are my top 3!

Vanessa's dress was/is beautiful. It doesn't look as dated as the others.
The two that stood out were Vanessa and Suzette. However, Vanessa has something that the other women did not have

Did I hear an Instrumental of "Memory" from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats?
Kentucky looked lovely
Vanessa...head and shoulders above the rest. Not even a contest that night.

I'm sorry but looked like Vanessa was the only one who came to a beauty pageant.
RIP Bert Parks
Long Live Bert Parks!!!!
They all look 35 years old lol, except for Vanessa Williams, she actually looked like a 20 yr old ...
Kim Boyce was also successful as a Christian music singer.
@LexieCohen Great comment -- laughed for 5 minutes!! :)
When pageants were pageants…..
Long Live Vanessa Williams!!!!
yes
haha..i thought the girl on that stage..haha..
hahaha..sorry for my language miss...
Why does Miss Mississppi walk so damn slow?
No, Bert Parks Is Dead,
Because He's The Original Host
Of Miss America
