How chop suey got its name: The song was originally titled "Suicide" but Columbia Records forced the band to change it to avoid controversy. The song title is therefore a wordplay, with "self-righteous suicide" replaced by "self-right-chop suey-cide" in order to avoid provocation by using absurdity.
I actually did not know what. Thanks!
I can't believe I never knew this xD
In what version, the one available in target and Walmart?
Because the original release of the album didn't have that horse shit in it.
I've heard the same story with the record label but I was under the impression they named it chop suey because that's a dish consisting of many different things and their music consists of many different things as well
haha yes and on the abum version you can actually hear Serj saying “we’re rolling suicide” right before the song starts

I just like it cuz she's hot
In an alternate universe this version was the original, and SOAD did a metal cover.
Even better, in an alternate universe where Jazz never lost its mainstream appeal, SOAD would be a Nu Jazz band that made this version originally, and this band would be doing a cover in that new underground genre, Metal.
This is great
Total!!
😍😍😍
Some youtubers making Pop Songs into Metal. Then there goes Robyn and PMJB doing Metal Songs into Vintage...🤔❓
as the the song progresses the singing becomes more like the original. I understand. It's just so good.
Is good but I can recommend playing at 1.25x speed
Holy shit. This is epic
Ok yeah this made it better

Soooo much better

"Rick Rubin, who produced Toxicity for System of a Down, cites this song as one of his most important projects. He told Rolling Stone:
"This song was originally going to be called “Self-Righteous Suicide,” and the record company rebelled. …I remember wanting to go to the mat and keep the title, and the band decided, “Let’s call it ‘Chop Suey!’” which I thought was kind of funny.
"
Chop-suey is the Americanization of the Chinese quick dish tsap sui, which means “odds and ends, mixed bits” in the Cantonese dialect. The song title is a play on “Self-right-Chop Suey-cide,” that has a further sort of humor in that they mixed up a controversial word into a nonsensical word to create a more ‘radio-friendly’ title."
- Genius Lyrics
System of a down is Genius, a lot of their music seems nonsensical to bypass the censorship of their home country.
Their lyrics give me life
Yay! Not the only one who knew that. But for those who did need a clue, the boredom of eating a delicious nonsensical leftover with recipes as varied as the one cooking it...during the filming of the video...
I believe anyone who knows anything about system, or 2000’s era metal/nu metal knows that

my favorite part is when the song slows down into "trust in my self righteous suicide,,,," the singing and the band come together so nice I felt like I could have cried for a moment (just like the song says).
Wow! That was amazing! I love the ending with the wink!! Totally made me smile!! You did such a great job singing! I love how you really poured your heart into the chorus, the melody of your voice was so soothing to my ears!! Bravo! Bravo!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Edit: I really appreciated how you used your arms in motion while singing beautifully, it really was the cherry on top!
Me: You cant just turn a metal song into a jazz song!
Robyn: Hold my trumpet!
You should see her twist rap into swing.
Metal and jazz are very similar believe it or not.
The song is called chop suey because they wanted to originally call it "suicide" but the record label wouldn't allow that so they chopped the word in half and it became chop suey. This is what Shavo (the bassist) said in an interview
I always feel like I'm the only one who knows that, finally found someone who also does :D
Tazzwar Azam And I think Serj is eating Chop Suey in some scenes during the video.
'The song title is therefore a wordplay from Self-righteous suicide to "Self-right-Chop Suey-cide" that replaces provocation by absurdity.'
sentimentaliteetti Yeah you were the only one who knew that, even the band didn't know. You are such a special little snow flake aren't you? The world doesn't deserve your insightful knowledge of the deep and complex lore of this world.
That is awesome. I am a huge System fan and did not know that. Thanks!
This song is amazing completely separately from Sytem of a Down.

Don't know if this has been answered yst or not. Reason they changed the name to Chop Suey from Suicide is that they needed to change it if they wanted it to be played over radio. But they left it in the beginning of the song, right before the music starts playing you can hear him say "We're rolling suicide" which basically means we're recording *insert title*
They "chopped the word suicide in half" and got 'Chop Suey'.
Self -right-chop-suey-cide

I really like when musicians do things like this.
The name "Chop Suey" is a play on the word "(Chop) Suey-cide". The song name was originally "Suicide" but they would not let them have that as the name of the song, so Serj came up with the name "Chop Suey"

To respond to the description, the song is called "Chop Suey" because it's a play on words. "Self righ *TIOUS SUI* cide" or "Self-righ-CHOP-SUEY-cide." According to a Genius contributor, the band was forced to rename the song from simply "Suicide" to something more appropriate. That's why you hear in the beginning of the original song "We're rolling Suicide", because that's what the project was originally called.
Finally someone that knows that😂
awesome! ok been wanting to know for whole. .
i don't think tious and chop sound similar at all, even if you try. I think its more of a tongue in cheek reference to how the simply "chopped" (or cut) the original title at the management's request. chop sui. It also works well because the dish is not homogeneous -- bunch of ingredients thrown together in soup; much like the song with its melodious and screaming, loud and soft parts.
One True Morty
Several sources indicate the band wanted to replace provocation with absurdity in attempt to make the song name more radio friendly. They achieved this through wordplay. I'd link you sources myself, but I'm fairly certain RUclips would mark the comment as spam. Google "Chop Suey song name" and those sources should appear.
Exactly, mate!
Wow!! The way Georgia looks at me makes me feel in heaven!!
This is by far the best version of this song that I have ever heard. I would argue that in someways, it’s even better and more nuanced than the original version. Kudos. 👏🏻

Talented. Yet reminds me that Jazz is not my thing; however, she has talent.
The song is called chop suey because the album was origonal going to be called suicide and include all the songs from steal this album! But they had to "chop" the suicide in half so we got chop siey.
Rick Rubin, who produced Toxicity for System of a Down, cites this song as one of his most important projects. He told Rolling Stone:
This song was originally going to be called “Self-Righteous Suicide,” and the record company rebelled. …I remember wanting to go to the mat and keep the title, and the band decided, “Let’s call it ‘Chop Suey!’” which I thought was kind of funny.

The song was originally named 'Suicide' but the record company and radio didn't think it was a good idea to call it that so they chopped it in half. Therefor, 'Chop Suey"
I finally managed to understand those quick parts of the song
Chop Suey is a Chinese stew made with meat or fish, plus bamboo sprouts, onions, rice and water chestnuts. System of a Down apparently used it for the name of the song because it describes their musical style, with lots of stuff thrown together.
Id love to see "Zombie" by the cranberries in this style!! Like if you agree!
casanova creed Miser actually does a really good cover of Zombie
The original already sounds like a donkey being butchered, can't imagine the agony when crossed with the vocal from this chop suey cover. listen to the vocals in the original they are freaking amazing the guy sounds completely nuts or out of his mind angry, with brief intermittent moments of tranquility it's a masterpiece! While both this version and cranbarrie's zombie is something to be played repetitively as a form of torture.
Yeaaaah
